We Need to Talk about Over-Celebrating

I think that the real question here is why you didn't put the cans of Fosters in the fridge at some stage. I mean maybe you drink the first one warm whilst you wait for the rest to cool down (maybe put them in the freezer).

The reasons why you appear to have joined the fun police maybe;

1) you were drinking Fosters
2) you were drinking warm Fosters
Rule number 1 of drinking at a 16yo's house party whilst his folks are away - do not leave your booze unattended. It'll be gone in seconds.

I'm 42 and think op is a grumpy old sod.

Who cares how they celebrate, it's just a bunch of kids in the prime of their life having fun!

My kids love it too.

It's entertainment, stop taking yourself so seriously op.

Hope someone recreates this

Papley is so gross to watch, i hope he doesnt score a goal so we dont have to see his routine goal cele. Ginni i love , but his are becoming far too practiced. Cringe factor

I do love other ones Sam Walsh especially in covid times. Even this years one against pies

Funny you say that, I was talking to a friend the other day and they were telling us about their kid's U10's soccer. They were having a chortle about one of the kids 'shooshing' the opposition parents after he scored a goal.

I was genuinely shocked, and somewhat appalled. Little punk deserves a slapping if you ask me.

The only players that get away with goal celebrations are good blokes like Charlie Cameron. Blokes like Ginnivan or Daicos - no thanks.

The kids are alright.
It's the older blokes I'd be trying to either:
A) curtail,
Or
B) eliminate.

A mate sent me this a week or two ago. The reason was that when we were kids we were at a house party one night, and whilst the party was going on around us, him and I were watching the footy in this dude's loungeroom. Completely anti-social. But you know, footy.

This game was on. He smoked his first cigarette that night, and went on to become one of the state's great smokers, and I famously drank 9 cans of room temp Foster's and chundered on the host's dog in his backyard.

Anyway, I digress.

I humoured him and watched this clip, and was taken by two things:

1) How freaking good Nicky Winmar was. I'd forgotten.

2) Goal celebrations.

Tony Lockett kicked 10 and dominated, including kicking his 100th - and he barely smiled after each goal. Did his business, and got on with it.

Compare that to today!!

I'm embarrassed by the goal celebrations today. In fact, I'm ashamed of humanity when I see the way Williams carried on last night. Or when I see Aaron Naughton or Stringer carry on after ever single freaking goal they kick, regardless of how difficult or meaningful the actual goal was.

So, players of today - I implore you, tone it down. You look like a dickhead.

Oh, and get off my lawn.

I'll go against the trend.
Footy is way better now. Those blokes would get slaughtered in today's game
Granted it was basically amateur then and with today's training standards Locket could have dominated still. But all he did was sit his arse in the goal square and out muscle blokes with force. Nothing wrong he was a gun for his time.
But footy is a way better spectical now.
Even the skills. Everyone bemoans skills today but they were horrendous. Could you imagine them getting out of traffic with handball or switching play?

Wrong thread Bro.

Yeah nah… you are probably right , however the game of football is so much different than what it used to be. Yet those players were footballers not athletes because they were trained that way.

However I don’t think that today’s footballers with yesteryears standards wouldn’t have survived either. If you think you have too many injuries nowadays, nowadays I don’t reckon half the clubs would be able to field a team if they were playing in VFL 30 years ago.

And if anyone wanted to go off at the crowd in celebrations like pointing or shushing or “you cant defend me” waves in front of the face, they would be targeted as arrogant and eventually be brought down a peg. Nowadays we are much more individualistic as a sport (and a society) and as such we think is ok to be arrogant in celebration.

I guess banging in 10 a week while the rest of the team are useless must take some of the joy out.

This is a non issue , players aren't robots.

So let me get this right

  • don't question the ump at all- don't even point at a replay
  • don't swear
  • don't abuse other players on any topic

and now don't celebrate kicking a goal when the crowd goes wild

Let's get rid of the premiership cup and lap too, it's all rather showy
