Just wanted to add that Etihad disgusts me, selling off season tickets to people who obviously don't want to turn up. At 12.30 the whole upper tier of the AFL Members, General Admission etc was full waiting to see the game, yet the whole second level of the wing on the other side of the ground is empty. Turns a potential 56,000 crowd into a 49,000.

I hate that stadium.

I wouldnt be bragging about to everyone on here though given the Hawks 50k members got free access to what was Melbournes HOME game as compensation for selling a game to Tassie.

and then they rub salt into the wound by playing those annoying "Medallion Club" ads on high rotation via the ground's screens.

Hmmm yeah, against opposition who are notorious for being strongly supported (not necessarily in membership numbers, but in general) regardless of how crap theyre playing.


My cousin and her fiance went to the game and they support neither team, so you can take 2 off your total.

That pretty piss poor then considering only 45,000 of a possible 80,000 who had access only attended. And that's not even taking in to account the non members who turned up.

This. We got the same number to the game against the Dees last year, despite it being half way through the season, and Sunday twilight. Should have been 50-60, tells me people weren't that excited about the first round.

Would expect 65,000 minimum next week against the Cats.

Agreed, even moreso since the ground was empty. I realise the contractual arrangements clubs have, but seriously, an extra 20k at the game would have been fantastic for both clubs supporters.

2 Victorian teams. one successful club and the other with some exciting youngsters hoping to show promise. i would have thought 50,000 would be par.

I'm not really sure where you were going with this thread.

Was it a good number or bad number?

And why is it on the main board?

Anyway, my 2 cents regarding Hawk supporters is, you can't always just say 50k should be at home games (not that this was a home game).

We have such a spread in our supporter base, 5k in WA, a bit less in SA, 7k in Tasmania, add in the country members and all the cats and dogs. Then there is only about 33,000 members in metro Melbourne, so expectations about crowds should be more realistic.

BTW, the figures are based on membership data released last year by Hawthorn, can't find it now, but the amounts seem right.

I was there and there is no way it was 50/50.
The only areas where there were large contingents of melbourne fans were behind the goals at punt road end and mcc. Practically all the public areas were hawthorn.
I would have thought 30,000 hawthorn fans and 15,000 melbourne.
Melbourne fans had more to cheer about in the last quarter so it probably sounded like there were as many during that term as the hawthorn crowd had practically gone to sleep by then.
