Everything I've seen from Stocker at AFL level so far, the poise, decision making, cleanliness by hand and foot on both sides, spacial awareness etc all screams 200+ game midfielder.

Don't be surprised if he ends up the best player from all the picks involved in the trade.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if he was the only player either team drafted with the picks in the trade either.

On another point, Adelaide's arrogance is going to see them become an early 2000's Carlton.

Sure, they're probably not going to break the salary cap and lose their draft picks. However, their list with all of those late 20's to early 30's players

33 -- Betts, Douglas
32 -- Jacobs
31 -- Mackay, Jenkins, Gibbs
30 -- Otten, Sloane, Walker
29 -- Lynch
28 -- Talia, Hartigan, Smith, Keath, Seedsman, Greenwood

As of early 2020 season screams old Carlton to me. Even if they lose a few of them they've got too much invested in them as a group to turn around and say "nah blokes, we're going to rebuild now. Sorry."

The pressure will be there from that group to stock up rather than rebuild. Additionally,

Of their players under the age of 23 the ONLY players who are likely to have played 30 games in their career by the end of the season are Milera and Murphy. Gallucci may or may not get there (he hasn't played since round 16).

That's not a list endearing itself to a rebuild. Conversely;

717751

Our group of 23 and younger TEN have played 30+ games. In fact, FIVE of them have 50+ games (only Milera has that milestone for Adelaide)

Marchbank, Kennedy, McKay, O'Brien, and Dow should all make the 50 game mark next season.

In essence, Adelaide are set to go down the bottom for years and they're too invested in their older players whether they like to drop them or not to invest in a rebuild.

Adelaide are set to go down

They loaded both barrels for a flag tilt. Even went the communist training camp approach at the start of last season to try and get the job done. Practiced their stand off poses their glorious captain thought made them appear a tough intimidating outfit before a ball was bounced.

Backfired tremendously!

With Pyke who’s terrible at selection, Ricciuto who gives a public running commentary and throws players and staff under the bus live on air, Walker who has forgotten how to lead his club (he was visibly non vocal on the weekend after the first quarter so either the players don’t want to listen to him or he’s lost his voice) and Justin Reid making horrible trades... they’re just short of Melbourne as the new laughing stock of the competition.

The funniest thing is that they did it a year too late. Had they pulled the trigger on the Gibbs deal in 2017 they probably go that one step further. Instead, they wasted that year of Gibbs peak - probably his last truly great year - and bend over and give SOS pretty much exactly what he wanted a year before for a player no longer worth that much.

And yet much of the deluded Adelaide fan base ate it all up until much like expired food at a cheap restaurant it gave them a bad case of food poisoning.

Stock reminds me of a mix of Andy/Angus Brayshaw, can win the ball but is better by foot on both sides

First NB's game I saw Stocker play and I thought - Luke Hodge.
Luke Hodge the player and obviously not the leader, but so many traits showed up that took me to thinking of Hodge.

Strength & aggression.
Good kicking on either foot.
Good kicking off one step.
Fair mark in the contest.
Good tackler.
Good vision.
Unflappable.

Where Stocker got involved, he just looked like a seasoned player.
Not the least bit worried about Stocker, whether we would have gone at pick #9 this year or pick #11.

Not worried about him either, think he was a great selection, despite people not wanting more youth

Stocker doesn't play like a 'kid' does he?
If you didn't know how old he was, you'd likely say he plays like a mid 20's player
He gives as good as he gets and I like that. Enforcer type.

One thing I didn't mention before is that Stocker has a presence.
Walsh doesn't have that presence and that's neither good nor bad, but it's somehow hard to not notice Stocker. This is for now and things may change.

Nice work wick - thanks.

To add to the Dooomsday scenario for Crows - further to above analysis you can add:

Crows had one of the easiest draws this year thanks to their poor 2018.

Crows are 2nd best on list of clubs re players missing games through injury in 2019 (Brisbane are top).

Add in a tougher draw and medium level of injuries, Crows would be 13th/14th and we would be calling our man SOSTRADAMUS........

If he hadn't broken his jaw, would have made the championships and more than held his own.

While he wasn't an accumulator like Walsh(not many are) or had the impact of a Caldwell/Smith and or the xfactor of a Rozee/Rakine, none of the kids this year are of that quality either.

I’ve been trying to think who he reminds me of.

I’m thinking Angus Brayshaw/Luke Shuey.

Big, strong, explosive, composed and can seriously kick the ball.

I don’t get down to vfl games as I live in Qld now but in his first game at afl level I thought the exact same thing.

He looked like he thrived on getting in an opponents face and having a physical confrontation.

Like Hodge, I don’t think he will be a 30 possession player throughout his career but I think he will be a general across half back who can be put in the middle or go forward when we need a bit more mongrel in those positions.

To the club, this trade was never pick 19 and a swap of firsts. It was only ever Liam Stocker for a swap of firsts. The trade only happened because Stocker was available. Any discussions trying to use the value of picks to see who won are just wrong. If I remember correctly we tried the same trade with another club with an earlier pick (port?).
Correct it was Port.
Great post.
