dont let them score multiple goals quickly. As soon as they get the momentum, get numbers back, scrap it out and wait for the momentum to change, then unleash hell!

HAVE to start well. We haven't done that against this mob. We're so confident in our late game fitness and ability. Keep it close and we'll reel 'em in!
We need to work hard both ways. All night.
They are the number 1 side in the comp for inside 50s and a fantastic contested possession and marking side.
Our run and spread against Collingwood was fantastic and I think that will be key to Friday night. Working hard on both ways!

Do whatever we did in the last quarter of our last two games against them for the whole game. I do worry about Geelong though. We beat teams like Collingwood and Sydney because our gameplan works well against theirs. Geelong have pretty much the same gameplan as us, so it comes down to the talent on the day. Despite our improvement this year, they still have an edge over us on that score. That means we'll probably have to beat them tactically. But if anybody can, it's Kern, since if a few of the articles I've read about his time at Geelong are to be believed he pretty much came up with their tactics in the first place.

Why do Geelong have to lose the game before we play them all the time. They haven't lost two in a row in over a year.

It's ridiculous, isn't it? We've played them three times this year, and all three have been immediately after one of the 5 games they've lost this year.

I just don't want Hawkins to play. We don't have a good match up for him...he always seems to take us apart even when he is half a player

Last time we played the Cats he had 6 touches and a goal. Fair to say that wasn't 'taking us apart'. If he does play, I hope Carlile is instructed to run off of him as much as reasonably practicable.

I'd like to point out that Geelong are beatable. Notably they have lost to Collingwood, Brisbane, Adelaide, and North this year. And I rate us as better than all four of them. With our superior fitness and recovery, we'll run over the top of them.

Enough is enough. We've been bossed by this team ever since we beat them in the 2004 Qualifying Final. We've lost home games, been thrashed away, embarrassed in a GF all to this team. Time to make a stand on the big stage and say we wont stand for this any longer. Time for redemption.

So how do we beat Geelong? Where do they continuously have the wood on us? I think theres a couple of ways that if we can nullify these aspects of their game plan, then we are a great shot at winning:

1) Stop their run from defence. Enright possibly out will be a huge help in this. But it was Mackie that destroyed us a few weeks ago. Taylor as well. Guthrie and guys like Motlop and Johnson push back hard and run it out. I'd almost love to see P Stewart come back in and play a forward tag on Mackie.

2) We must choke their run and force them wide. Its something we didnt do in Round 20 and its something we must try to do this week. Their speed is the #1 thing that really worries me. We arent a quick side and have seen a number of times this year how we've been exploited by quick sides. We cant allow them to control the corridor. Force them to the wings, make them play short, stop-start football.

3) their tall forwards. Pods, Hawkins, Vardy/Blicavs have genuine height, genuine contested marking ability and can all kick bags of goals. Taylor goes up there too and has beaten us in the past. Our talls will need to be switched on and no doubt we will see us push an extra man o two back to try and block space and stop as much uncontested marks inside 50 as possible.

So, can we beat Geelong? Can we end this hoodoo?
We did beat them in Geelong in 2007 around 6 or 7 Weeks before the GF debacle.

I think that we can do it, surely the boys will have incredible belief in Hinkley and themselves.
Still think the Cats will trump us, they have far more to lose in terms of going out in straight sets after being set up as premiership favourites only a few months back. I really just want us to compete and take this game down to the wire.

Geelong are great at setting up a quick switch into the corridor and hitting targets, while compressing the opposition down a wing. We have to make sure we don't get to handball happy as they will be quick to smother once we're compressed into a certain zone. Gotta follow the lead of Cornes on the weekend by taking those risks and hitting targets with kicks to make sure we can break through before they get a defensive zone set up.

As always, our skills going into our forward 50 will win or lose this game. Go in slow or sloppy, Cats will kill us on the rebound. Be quick and efficient and we can catch them out especially with Enright out and maybe Mackie sore.

If its wet, I'll give us a great chance.

Looking at their potential lineup, the question might be how can Geelong beat Port?

If they don't have Caddy, Enright and Hawkins they are considerably weaker all over the ground. I would back us to beat them.

Monfries can stay on Bartel/Guthrie, another 7 thanks Gus.
i'd bring in Neade if the Hoon is injured and really push their small defenders. has already been said that Taylor/Lonergan, Hawkins/Pods, Blicavs/Vardy, isn't really taller than collingwood so Hombsch isn't a certainty.

Defend the corridor especially the corridor from the edge of square to their goal line, make them have set shots on the boundary and just keep doing what we doing.

Personally would have Jonas/Kornes on Johnson, Cassisi on Selwood and Mackie needs to be accountable if enright is out. Head to Head with the rest.

I'd still like Westhoff to try and take taylor up the ground, that would help immensely, especially if Enright is OUT OUT OUT.

We are in no position to be cocky however. $4 under dogs, wait to Thursday at 4pm we could be $5.50 before teams are released :)

Good point with Jonas on Johnson. Can beat him when he plays forward and Jonas was a pretty handy midfield tagger in his first 2-3 games (The Jonas lovers will remember).

I like Jonas drifting back for support, he won't be able to do that as much with SJ I'd have thought, you can't let him run free.

Hinkley will know the match ups, IHWT

We are always caught out against their quick play on and attack at all costs game style. We need be switched on to the fact that they like to play fast footy and pressure the ball carrier into forcing turnovers.
We also seem to have real trouble scoring decent numbers against them, how we go about doing that... No idea. C'mon Kern. Pls.

Personally, this is how I'd deal with the SJ situation:
  • Start the game with Cornes on Johnson. If Johnson starts in the centre square, Kane can start on the wing and catch up to him in general play. Johnson's strength as a midfielder isn't in winning contests but in gut-running to pick up plenty of cheap ball, and those are the sort of players that Kornes specialises in restricting. Match up Jonas with whichever Geelong forward he's best suited to and a loose player (O'Shea would be my choice, since he's flexible enough to match up on talls or smalls and he's also fit and skilled enough to help with rebounding as a loose man and still be able to run back and perform defensive duties when needed) in defence.
  • If Johnson moves into the forward line, move Jonas onto Johnson, move O'Shea onto Jonas' man, and a) play Kane as a free man in the midfield, or b) try to free up somebody like Hartlett or Wingard by sending Kane to whoever Hartlett/Wingard is matched up and telling Hartlett/Wingard to not worrying about defending that man and focus entirely on winning the ball.
Other match-ups:
Cassisi to Selwood. Cassisi is better suited to the inside ball-winners like Selwood, and he has experience as a D50 defender, so hopefully Selwood's trips forward won't be as much of an issue as they would be if we had somebody like Cornes on him.

Pittard to Motlop. Pittard has the speed to keep up with him (or at least do a better job of keeping up with him than what most of our players would do), and Motlop's not particularly good overhead so Pittard's weakness in that area shouldn't get exposed too much.

Carlile to Hawkins. I say Carlile instead of Trengove because Carlile is quicker and a better ball user. Instruct him to run off of the underdone (and not great at defensive pressure at the best of times anyway) Hawkins at every opportunity.

Logan to Mackie. Monfries to Bartel. If we're playing a loose defender, they will be too, and we definitely don't want it to be one of these guys. Mackie is a better defender than Bartel, so Logan can focus entirely on shutting Mackie down whereas Monfries can try to hurt Bartel going the other way. Plays to both our guys' strengths and to Bartel's weakness.

If Harry Taylor goes forward, send Westhoff to follow him down. Two of the best swingmen in the AFL playing against each other. Should be an interesting match-up.

Sounds simple, but same as you did against Collingwood, withstand the pressure for most of the quarter then hurt them in red time. If i heard correctly you guys kicked 6 goals to zip in red time during the second half on saturday night? If you guys can kick goals late in the quarters (hopefully you can during the quarters) the pressure will be on.

We can and will beat them if we play fearless football. Not reckless - reckless football is going for the 10% pass that will look spectacular if it comes off but if it doesn't will cost us a goal. Fearless football is going for the 70% pass because you have faith in the ability of your teammate to win that ball, because he knows that at the end of the game, you're going to do the same for him.

This is our time. Not next year, not in two years time. Now. If we want it.

I know and itisnt2hard. They are there for the taking. Fine line between loosing a last quarter and making the decision of not wanting to play interstate the following week. Not that any team would do that right. Think this might just bite them on the butt.

just be as ferocious as we were against Collingwood and we will win...it would also help to get some free kicks in the goal square and kick about 10 goals to zip in the second quarter. you have to believe..i believe..
