How do we fix the trade period?

I've read the article but I don't accept the premise of the argument. You can't make clubs value their talent a certain way and no matter how short the period is there will always be deals done in the final hours.

Ignore it.
You got it.

I tend to tune out and wait for the completed deals. I might occasionally scan the headlines - they usually tell me all I need to know. Dangerfield deal getting closer… Brisbane say they won't trade Aish… Jed Anderson wants out… blah blah blah...

One of the funniest aspects of the trade period is seeing all the "wheeling and dealing" from hundreds of online amateur list managers as they reject various trade proposals and make their own counter offers with complex deals involving multiple draft picks and players from 3 or 4 clubs. I never have the heart to tell them they've got no say in it. Let them have their fun.

Hard to ignore this time of year as a lions fan as all your fav players are walking out.
True.

That would suck… But following every update and rumour isn't going to prevent the players from walking out.

All the more reason to just ignore it all and wait for the final damage report.
That way, you're not constantly fretting and bummed out. Just take the bad news in one hit.

"We'll throw him in the PSD!"

Lets get rid of the pre-season draft. It's main purpose now days is as leverage in trades.

If a player self-delists and puts themselves into the national draft, the departure club gets a compensation pick directly after the pick used to select the departed player. Prosecute players found to tampering the draft to get to a preferred club.

It doesn't compromise the draft as the extra player is taken at the same pick as the compensation pick. It also ensures that there is a "floor value" for departing players.

That should help restore the balance in trade deals.

Kick essendon out of the comp. Their trading practice of over valuing and wanting to undercut is the sole reason most trades are done in the last 2 hours.

Look in your own backyard before taking potshots. The Burgoyne trade almost didn't go ahead because Hawthorn wanted to undercut Port. It was Essendon and Geelong getting involved in the deal that got it through.

Has merit.

Yeah fare enough. Ive had enough on my plate this week with my wife having an emergency c section and moving house thid week so plenty here now.

Essendon are the biggest flogs too trade with, no doubt.

But it doesn't need too change imo

And then to top it all off they act so affronted when another poster underrates a player from their team.

'There's no way x will match that offer: here's what we will do.'

So ludicrous.

Don't forget these time honoured classics

The "3 of our shit players for your first round pick" coup, because quantity > quality

The "our average midfielder on the outer + 3rd round pick for your gun midfielder" gambit, because teams love weakening themselves for no reason.

The simplest way to deal with trade period now is just to ignore it. It wouldn't really bother me if it were 365 days, until the ink is on the paper none of it means anything.

The trade week/month/eon seems to drag on forever, how can it be fixed?
By recognizing that it isn't a spectator sport? If the clubs want it changed to better facilitate the movement of players, then go ahead, otherwise leave it alone.

1. Free Agency

- change the criteria to being based on the number of games played as opposed to the number of years at the club (I'd put it at 175)

- get rid of the unrestricted & restricted categories, the player is either a Free Agent or he isn't, if a player wants to move on his management works out a suitable contract on their behalf and they then sign-up with their new club

- completely scrap the 'compensation' picks rule, it penalises all of the other clubs down the line, however, come up with a system whereby the club winning the Free Agent loses one of their draft picks to the club who they have taken the player from

- Free Agency period is two days only just prior to Trade Week

2. Trade Week

- shortened to five 'working days (ie. Monday-Friday)

- on the morning of Day 1, all clubs fill out a form that that details (a) the players that have said they want to move clubs & what their expectation in return is for each, (b) the players that they would be prepared to trade out subject to a suitable deal being struck & what their expectation in return is for each, & (c) the players who are highly unlikely to ever be traded, these lists are circulated to all other clubs

- clubs can trade as little or as much as they want and they can structure the deals in whatever form they want to, there is no AFL over-ride, its completely open slather

- contracted players can be traded when & where their host club wants to at any time within their contract period

- clubs can trade players, picks or a combination of both as they seem fit

- any player who wanted to move via Free Agency or Trade but could not find a new club must go into the National Draft

- Trade Week is held on the third week in October

3. The Draft

- remove the Pre-Season Draft

- remove the Rookie Draft

- implement one all-encompassing draft which upon completion, all clubs will have their lists completely full

- clubs can pass at any time within the draft but also has the opportunity to come back in to the draft later on if they feel the need

- the all-encompassing draft is held the week after Trade Week

4. Playing Lists

- increase the size of playing lists to 50

- remove the rookie category

- clubs can name 5 additional players as "supplementary" to their list who can be used to fill the reserves team when the club is enduring a severe rash of injuries and/or suspensions

Like everything in footy it evolves. A lot of the volatility in the last couple of years isn't structural at all, it's from players walking out while contracted and their clubs accepting it to get something rather than nothing.
