Review How will Mark Neeld be Remembered?

Bringing up positives about Mark Neeld is akin to saying that there was a good side to....... The negatives so heavily outweigh the positives that there's no point considering the latter.

Neeld was a disaster, Neeld almost brought a club to its knees.

Goddamn each Monday morning during the Neeld era, the only hope football-wise I had was to see "Neeld sacked" on the front page of the papers.

Worse than Denis Jone of 1978 fame. Any coach who promulgates a crab-like movement of the football from the backline should be shot.

History will be much much kinder to Dean Bailey.

I don't know if you guys heard it but that infamous Mario from Doncaster put Cam Scwab to the sword on SEN a few days ago.

As the man who caused (catalyst for) the single greatest clean out of a club in recent history. Gone: President, half the Board, CEO, Coach, most of the assistant coaches and half the back office staff as well. I'm expecting to see a change of captain(s) too to complete the sweep.

I'll remember him as a guy who had a crack. He did exactly what I wanted; cut the crap and got tough on the players.

Ultimately he failed, but he wasn't the first and won't be last. There has been a few fresh coaching appointments recently. Guaranteed one is going to fail hard.

I respect Neeld for the way he conducted his exit from the club also. He knew he failed, accepted it and moved on. But never gave up either which shows great character. I would've given up for sure.

Let's face it. Coaching us recently is the toughest gig in football and you need balls to give it a crack. Good luck to Neeld.

Coaches get paid between $700k-$1.5m, you don't need any balls to do that. Indian labourers in Qatar work in 50 degree heat for $330 a month, that takes balls and desperation, not a guy telling a bunch of people how to chase a ball. Teachers need to work 14 years to earn $700k.

as the final straw that broke the camels back. He should never have been hired , and the events surrounding the sacking of Bailey suggest we were already a mess long before Neeld got there .
To me every time i hear the name Neeld , i think of Schwab and the rest of the boys club down there.
The analogy using Hitler was very poor IMO , even if it was tongue in cheek stuff.

The best way to remember him will be to have Michael Douglas play him in the ABC mini-series:

You know I reckon that's pretty fair

Also, another interesting point, rumours starting about Saints players disliking Watters (seems to be the same rumours that started re Neeld)

Could it be, 2 products of Malthouse have attempted to go in with his sledgehammer approach, but are lacking in credibility to do so? - Buckley also seems to have a rift with players (more public)

All I know is seeing yourself on the news every night and the back page every morning would be stressful. I wouldn't do it.

I think he went into the job with a my way or the highway approach. Seemed too caught up in the negative side of players rather than encouraging them to play to their strengths, whilst focussing on addressing their weaknesses. Didn't strike me as a guy who built up a rapport with the players.

His game plan of kicking along the flanks and having forwards lead into pockets was mind-numbingly predictable and stupid. And it seems that the players never bought into it.

I liked his recruiting strategy, and at least he was able to attract some relatively big name players, which is something that Bailey couldn't.

At the end of the day he was a poor coach because he had no man management skills. Unlike others, I don't see Bailey in a better light. He was a god awful coach as well with a terrible game plan and recruiting philosophy.

100% it is, and I've been thinking it all season. Lets not forget that Malthouse was a shade away for eleventh and the fact that he beat Richmond in a gifted final doesn't hide this.

Malthouse, Buckley, Neeld, Watters - the Premiership team who thought they'd done it all.

Picking Hogan with pick 3, Toumpas with pick 4 and Viney with a 2nd rounder is due to how bad Neeld was as a coach, picking the best teenagers with the best picks in the draft shouldn't be credited to Neeld.

Picking up Clark and Dawes has been good for us, but at the same time losing Moloney, Rivers and now Sylvia are just as bad in my option.
This is an interesting point, because if it wasn't for his poor coaching we wouldn't of been in the position to pick up viney in the second round, therefore no Hogan or no toumpas. My thoughts on Neeld will be a guy whom I thought would bring in a defensive game plan, and stop the leaking and have us competing better with the best teams. Instead he delivered none of that and completely shot the playing groups confidence.

If we take what Roos said about coaching at face value, that it is as much about man management as it is about tactics etc., Neelds gameplan probably never came to fruition as he saw it, but it was outdated at best, completely unsuited to our team. As for player management... terrible. first impressions lasted forever with Neeld, if you were on his bad side you were out

That being said, are the Saints in for a Melbourne like period?

Collingwood probably not - they still have the cattle to be competitive and the pulling power to top up with reasonable players (i.e. Adams looks likely to land with them)

Melbourne had the competitive cattle in 2007 and 2008, but eventually other teams overtake you and you end up falling down.

IMO, GC will be more competitive in 2014 than Collingwood. Just a tip.

Don't doubt that, but I don't think Collingwood will have a Melbourne-esque period

there's always one...

If Watters and co screw up this coming draft period they're currently selling the good cutlery for, yes. It's total rebuild time. He's had a decent start to his coaching career but this is where he swims or sinks.

It's a difficult job to do well in, but let's not pretend it takes some sort of bravery/balls to be a coach.

Even if you were shit and get sacked in 2 years, you get paid between 1.5-3 mil gross. All this with zero risk of permanent physical harm. Pretty good deal and 99% of people would fight for such a job.

  • Oversaw a period when we went from 'the next dominant side' to resident laughing stock.

I am not trolling, but you guys were not heading to being 'the next dominant side' with Dean Bailey or after he left. The issues ran deeper and it is really good that your club has finally had the guts to sort it out and ditch the parasites.

I feel the competition has really been missing something over the last 6 years, and it will be good to see Melbourne climb back up the ladder with strong leadership.
