My voting habits in both state and federal elections are similar, I'm more likely to give independents/smaller parties votes/higher preferences in the upper house in both.

I'm happy with Dodgy Dan building rail infrastructure, the state needs it, short term pain for long-term gain imo.

LT gain?! that shit will be over-crowded by the time it's open, LT would be building for the next 60 years, not the next 16...Melbourne is a total cluster **** when it comes to infrastructure and transport.

What makes them historical?

What you're describing isn't some injustice - it's what we have to do to limit urban sprawl, and to allow people to live somewhat close to where they work. This "featureless tower block monstrosity" might hold a few dozen apartments. That's better from an urban planning perspective than a 100-year old place owned by a pair of squillionaires.

As I said earlier, the number of places in Melbourne that are truly historic because of public attachment or significant events can probably be counted on your hands.

Massive inner city high rise development isn't limiting urban sprawl. Both are happening.

That's awful. It looks like a high rise favella or a stacked New Delhi slum.

Memo to Dan, the recycling mess isnt about to go away & if you arent giving Lil the shove (she needs a swift kick) GIVE HER A HAND, the lunatics running local government are making their own rules again so the recycling rules at work, at home & anywhere you go out are different.
This is a State wide problem, you can fix it Dan

  • Yarra City Council will begin a one-year trial of ... well as bins for general recycling, organic and green waste, and rubbish.
  • the Surf Coast Shire in Victoria, which covers Torquay, Angelsea and Lorne, has proposed adding an extra recycling bin to separate glass from other recycling, and even a fifth to separate cardboard and paper from plastic.
Fair dinkum Dan, where are you?

LT gain?! that s**t will be over-crowded by the time it's open, LT would be building for the next 60 years, not the next 16...Melbourne is a total cluster fu** when it comes to infrastructure and transport.

BTW, if you think that infrastructure should be "forward thinking" and "long-term", then you shouldn't be critical of a plan to build the East-West Link because the Business Case isn't sufficently attractive NOW. Just like the road that would connect to it, the Eastern Freeway, it's a classic case of "build it and they will come".

On public transport (and I'm a user of public transport when I work in Melbourne), how do we get more people on public transport and out of cars? Cars give people a (perceived) sense of control. A train breaks down and you're stuck. Public transport advocates need something slightly more sophisticated than the transport equivalent of "eat your vegetables, they're good for you".

Do you work in the inner city when in Melbourne, if so its great IMHO but worthless when trying to achieve a multitude of tasks across greater Melbourne, thats WORTHLESS.

There was a comment on Reddit today from a Melbourne bus user having to wait on a stationary bus for timetable reasons while the driver got out and had a smoke.

I can understand the logic behind it but it would absolutely shit me up the wall.

It does, as does a bus flying past early & you are 100m away, why was he early? Yep, I get there earlier now & dont even blame the Opposition.

I was on a bus just the other day and couldn't figure out why we were stopping every three stops for a minute or two at a time.

Then I move down the front and see the driver is stopping periodically to text. (Bus was 10 minutes late getting into the city).

I'm still a fan of the Andrews government's transport infrastructure plans though.

Still had to laugh about the Herald Sun's declaration in their editorial back in 2014 when Daniel Andrews was first elected Premier, when they said, "We will hold this government to account."

Really? I thought it was the Opposition's job to do that-hold the government, whether it's state or federal to account. Not a daily newspaper.

It just go to show you why the Victorian Opposition is so inept at its job, and why the Coalition is still in a state of shock over its Victorian election hammering last year.

In fact, I can't see the Coalition being back in power for another 2-3 terms.

uh.... what?

If PT can get you there faster without stress or expense of parking then that's hardly an equivalent to eating veggies.

There's a reason why absolutely no one drives to work in Manhattan here. If you build something better then people will use it, no propaganda is required.

Manhattan & Melbourne have little in common in public transport terms - spent a bit of time in Tokyo & its unlike Melbourne either.

I mean, you're ignoring decades of cultural attachment to public transport there... New Yorkers love to walk and catch the subway. It's associated with being a New Yorker. Trams are associated with Melbourne but not with Melbournians. I don't know a single person who would say to me "I love catching a tram".

Merely stating the clear rationality of why people should use public transport is not going to work? We know this because it hasn't worked yet. There needs to be a better plan for getting people off the roads and into public transport than we have now. This not only means funding, but a better comms strategy.

I think you're overstating New Yorkers' love of the subway. It's like Londoners with the tube and Melburnians with trams - they may not love it but they're glad they have it.

Easy. More services. Buses for instance many routes are next to useless. A bus running 30-60 minutes doesn't cut it.
If you build roads you get cars. You build public transport you get people using public transport.
It's called induced demand. Both sides of politics don't get it. Thier attitude for PT is people have to use it before they upgrade it. It never works like that.

Andrews says Extinction Rebellion aren't winning the climate cause any friends because people are already being significantly inconvenienced by major construction works. The irony clearly escapes him that the major construction works that inconvenience many more people that the climate loons are due to his policies after he has consistently feigned neutral on the record increases in Melbourne's population.

The Aus economy was supposed to transition away from mining construction (the noughties) & nobody is keen to admit only immigration is fuelling the building boom that filled the coffers of the Vic State Govt, bit hard to blame that on just Dastardly Dan.

As I have pointed out before Dan likes to feign neutral on Melbourne's massive population rise. At the same time he is happy to rake in the stamp duty from the resulting building boom, and also the the increased GST disbursements. He can claim economic growth for Victoria (though GDP per person is static) that allows him to spend multi-billions on infrastructure to look like 'he is doing something'.

It's nonsense that Andrews is having a crack at climate protesters for temporarily disrupting people's lives when his policies are massively degrading people's quality of life for years to come.

Like this example:

If you're behind the wheel, or sitting in a bus or train this morning, how happy are you with the amount of time you're commuting to and from work?
According to the ABC's Australia Talks national survey many of us aren't, and that's particularly true for residents of the federal electorate of Lalor in Melbourne's outer west.
The area includes the rapidly expanding suburb of Tarneit where families who moved in just months ago on the promise of good transport links to the city say they're feeling tricked — and trapped.

The transport problems in Tarneit are just are symptom of the high immigration levels. We are being dudded by all the political parties and the media who don't address it.

& its not just down in Wyndham (Tarneit), the Donnybrook station north of Melbourne serviced by V Line is being surrounded by new houses, more to come. Hume City & City of Whittlesea.

So they moved in "just months ago" and expected that a train line would be built in that time? That's just stupidity.

I guess the truth doesn't evoke as much sympathy? News probably won't cover you saying "I bought on the cheap hoping to make a mint as soon as a train line was built" or "I bought in the middle of nowhere cos I want to have my cake and eat it too with cheap housing, backyards, and inner city ammenities."
