Rumour Hugh Greenwood waiting to re-sign!

No one knows the list we have because we haven’t played them.

But what we’ve seen is ROB and Himmelberg step in for Jacobs and Jenkins very well.

We’ve got talent in the SANFL that needs to get a go.

I agree but lets play the youth because this year is still probably an unknown, our draw has been kind and we have yet to beat a true contender unfortunately we wont know that this week either as Port are crap.

ROB and Himmelberg are serviceable but haven't played a decent team yet with quality players so time will tell how they perform maybe round 10 when we take on the eagles. They need to stay in for sure as we need to now if they can play it when it counts

The talent in the SANFL, are we talking 18 year olds who need to be developed, like it took Danger to develop, his first two or three years were pretty much non events, like Fyfe, pretty sure this talent we have, wont reach their heights so it may take 4 years to develop them, as its taken both EH and ROB whim still have more to do .

This Saturday will probably be the best duo they will take on in the AFL.

I agree with most of this but my understanding on Greenwood's decision was a personal choice, wasn't he contracted at the Perth Wildcats at the time. Keith from my limited knowledge of cricket had just about exhausted his opportunities to get a decent paying cricket commitment?
I think Greenwood was.of the mindset that if his Basketball career was limited to NBL and not NBA or Euroleague he is better off playing AFL. Would make more money.

He signed a contract in the NBL that was on decent money, more than we were offering

Very much a step backwards hoping to take a couple forward

I doubt he’s going to be stupid about it now, but he deserves a good contract
The NBL salary (soft) cap is $1.1m.

A roster is 11/12 players.

He was getting paid more as an AFL Rookie.

Are you saying the premiership window is wide open for the next 3 years with the list we have?
I think our list is good enough for us to be in the top eight and even top four. From there a team is always a chance. Our recruiting has been solid enough so that we have talent being prepared to replace those who will retire, and as we are seeing at the moment we have put our season back on track and are winning with around six or seven who would have been considered first 22 at round one out. We can also add to this a likely top two draft pick this year and three picks in the top 37 or so. If things are good enough off field I see no reason why we will need to go through a sudden dip and rebuilding process for the foreseeable future.

It could be, but luckily for us the rest of their team is out, imagine if we were missing Crouch Crouch Betts, talia and tex, is that their equivelant to Gray, Wines Dixon Ebert Jonas

Occasionally you cop a lucky break and it appears we have copped one

I agree I think we are competitive as we always have been

Our season has yet to take shape until we beat contenders otherwise we will remain competitive

A lot hate that wortd competitive as it describes us to a tee over the years

Someone said he’d put them off till the end of the year?
Rumoured that he has put off talks until the mid-year break. This makes sense since he will go from a back up key defender at the start of the season to arguably an All Australian contender by then. I for one am delighted that his value is sky rocketing.

Hugh’s value is also tricky. It will surprise no one that I believe he is worth more than many others think. Whilst Sloane, Mrouch and Brouch are better players, he is by far our best defensive inside mid and can also make an impact as a forward. Is he more valuable to the team than Gibbs? Definitely.

I find it surprising (not really) that some of the same people that complain that we lose players and say that we have to stop stuffing around also complain about signing Lynch and JJ to long term deals.

Only complete mouthbreathers would want their side to be non-competitive.

We have the list to be top four. Any side in the top four can win the flag.

Geelong and Collingwood look excellent - you can throw a blanket over the next eight teams.

I don't believe we have got a list that will be top 4, but I guess the only answer to that will be told later in the year , like last year l be

I do believe we will be competitive as usual

Rumour at the time was he'd been told he was getting into the Boomers squad, then Lemanis picked Cameron Gliddon and Adam Gibson ahead of him, which is what caused him to quit the Wildcats and join us. I don't think he had much interest in playing in Europe, though he could have made decent money there, so without being able to showcase his skills for the national squad he was probably fighting an uphill battle to make it to an NBA team which was his dream and where the big $ are for basketball.

Danger may only be making $800K playing for the Cats, but they're making it up to him in other ways so he doesn't lose out.
I thought all these 3rd party/media deals need to be declare but his wife apparently got a very lucrative job at one of big backer's company at the Cats which doesn't, go figure.

I know this won't be popular, but I wouldn't be adverse to trading him if the trade offer was good enough.

I love Hugh, but the reality is that we're not challenging for a flag anytime soon so if he wanted to leave and Freo offered us something decent I would seriously consider it.

So on the pre radio broadcast over here in sunny old perth there was a discussion by the three match callers about Thor heading to Freo at the end of this season. Apparently he had tried to get there last year in the trade period and the AFC didnt want a bar of it. He still wants to get there in this years trade period... APPARENTLY. They also said this was the reason as to why he was left in the SANFL for the start of the year as he and the coaching staff were at a head because of said trade demands.

Now this makes no sense to me, he has no ties to perth, is loved by the crows, the fans, and playing group. Has anyone in the know also heard talk of this or is it Karl Langdon, Pavlich and co talking junk and filling in gaps. Jeez i hope so.

If the worst is true, where do we go with Hugh?. Whats he worth and whats a fair trade?
The highlighted bit tells me its bullshit.

Hugh missed majority of the pre-season because of an issue with abdominal muscle. He could not complete a great deal conditioning or match simulation training. For a player that comes from a basketball background and whose main weakness is his aerobic capacity, then it was always going to be the case of him not being brought straight back in. This is despite how important he is to the team. He is clearly in our best 22 and will get selected every time if he is fit and not in a massive form slump.

Inclusion of Greenwood and CEY around stoppages has actually seen the fortunes of the team turn somewhat. All of sudden there are two massive bodies that take up space and get us the clearences in there. Both have been huge support for Sloane and Crouch boys. Hugh's ability to take a contested mark as a forward is an additional reason why our forward line has functioned better in recent times.

Finally somene sensible like me.

It is unlikely we will get a good trade and if not he stays

the trade figure will be determined by how he is rated by the clubs wanting him, at least it will give us an idea what he is rated like by neutral proffessionals

I think the Club needs to decide whether to take the short term pain and let players like Greenwood & Keath (who might be going into their best years but only for another 3-5 years) go and get draft picks for the long term, or hang on to them to let our list get back to challenging as soon as possible.

That's the biggest dilemma for the club has it got a list that can challenge without say Douglas, Jacobs, Tex , Betts , Lynch, Gibbs as its pretty evident all of them are falling off the cliff, aren't the replacements ready to challenge

If the answer is yes pay Greenwood big bucks and have a crack if not get some trade value and rebuild

Not sure I understand this logic. Greenwood should be around for another 5+ years. Who has any idea if we'll be challenging for a flag in that time? If you'd asked me in 2014 I wouldn't have said we'd be in a grand final in three years time.

Maybe if he was 30, I'd understand this. But he's not. He's 27, and in terms of footy years he's young as well because his body hasn't taken a battering from playing throughout his early 20s.

That's where my head is at the moment.

If the club is honest and believes that they're not a premiership calibre squad then it needs to make some hard calls.

If Freo hypothetically were to offer pick 11 or 12 for Greenwood the club needs to look at whether to take it and go to the draft with 3 picks inside the top 25 (Pick 1-3 from Carlton, 12 from Freo and Carlton's 2nd round pick) and load up on talent.

Those three players together with Milera, Fog, Jones, McHenry would provide a good group of youngsters to build a side around and if we look at trying to pinch Grundy we could be staring down at possibility of a quick rebuild.
