Hypothetical: Another year wrecked by injuries - who will be made accountable?

We have lead the league in games lost through injuries the last two years and the start of this year does not look promising. The problems that are faced are not not new and if the staff who are there cannot manage the easily identifiable and often repeated issues then they need to get people in there who can. If we have a repeat of last year heads should role.

Is it a surprise that the Saints who picked up one of Sydney's key player management guys after years of terrible injury management is suddenly looking fitter and more formidable and there is a noticeable lack of major injury issues. When a guy like that goes on the market I would have hoped the Lions would have been knocking the door down to get him on board.

I guess year one (?) of the three-year program to give players the resilience to achieve superior fitness levels without suffering injury isn't off to a fantastic start.

Easily identifiable yes, easily delt with definately not.

Lets not jump the gun here, remember this is a hypothetical situation, it is far too early to tell how we will fare, if we did have another poor year i am certain they will look for a change particularly in the s&c department.

It's not that simple though. You don't want to just be sacking people willy nilly. The first step is to find out why this is happening. Is it from training, recovery, medical treatment, nutrition or the grounds they play on? Is it a flow on effect from previous years, is it because of the type of players we recruit, is it a byproduct of quick player development, is it because of our style of play, is there a culture of hiding injuries, do players need to be supervised to make sure they do their pilates, or is it something that we hadn't even thought of. Once the problem is identified then that would be the time to decide what action should be taken, which may or may not include giving people the flick.

One would hope this is all being reviewed now after 2 shocking seasons (and it sounds like it is to some extent).

Not saying people should be moved on, but another poor year and an independent review may be an option.

Agree with all of that.

What price have we paid for the fast tracking of players? I recall a number of statements about how we needed to get games into our younger players. This means that they needed to be fit enough to play a lot of senior football, probably requiring a "high risk' training strategy to ensure that. To what extent did we play Russian roulette with the fitness of guys like Brennan, Selwood, Rischitelli, Sherman, Adcock by pushing their training to the brink, knowing that we didn't have the "middle class" on our list to step up with the loss of the premiership veterans?

If we could have nursed their development, we would have but the reality is that unless we wanted to spend a number of years in the bottom 2 or 3, we needed that 2002-2004 cohort to make an early impact in senior footy. That requires an intensive strength and conditioning program and the necessary fallout is a higher rate of injury (particularly soft tissue).

Couple that with the fact that, until now, we carried a number of crocks on our list. Hadley, Leppitsch, Scott, McDonald, Garner and others must have skewed the stats.

good point POBT - and perhaps Vossy? was he in the 'retired' or 'long-term injury' basket with regards to the 'games lost through injury' tally last year?

BTW for those questioning the s+c of the squad and the personnel, i'm not saying your imagining things, just that the jury's still out for me - there are still many potential factors at this stage...you have to find whether the link between the program and the injury list is actually causal or just correlative

I thought about him but didn't want to sully his good name ;)

Yep - I'm the same. Certainly, there is enough there to raise legitimate concerns about the program - whether or not addressing those concerns will make a difference to the injury rate is up for debate.

I really do think we'll have more of an idea how we are shaping up injury wise in about July.
