Prediction Hypothetical finish to 2023 - finish with a bang, or continue as we are?

The title says it all!

There are two hypothetical situations here...

1. Hawthorn finish with a bang, winning 10 of their last 12 games and sneaking into the finals in 8th place. The resurgence comes from everyone, but mostly from younger players and from building continuity together. The Sam Mitchell game plan becomes obvious. We finish with a pick between 10 - 12.

2. Hawthorn continue to struggle in games, losing 10 of their last 12 games with some big losses. Team work continues to be an issue as we struggle to string the game plan together for more than a quarter at a time. Players keep their current output. We finish with a pick between 1 - 3.

Not saying the first option is likely, these are just hypothetical. Which end to the season do you think is best for the club, and would you prefer Hawthorn have?

I like your optimism mate but I think we only have another 3-5 wins in us for the year.
North, maybe Gold Coast, GWS, Richmond and if Carlton continue on their path, maybe them too.

Edit, I'd love option 1 but realistically option two with a lot of close losses showing which direction we are headed.

I'd go for the least likely and one I don't see happening - finishing with an almighty bang (to get us to finals that is, I see us racking up a few wins but not enough), even though we end up with a worse pick. We got Will Day at 13, Jai Newcombe MSD.

It would be brilliant for the young team's development and belief, a huge lift for the whole club and supporters during a period which has been pretty tough, plus would definitely help us attract top young talent from other clubs. Currently they are probably leaning towards other higher placed clubs, seeing them as their best chance to play finals and achieve the ultimate success. Would fast track our rebuild considerably.

Under hypothetical scenario one; ie finish with a bang, we accelerate the group’s trajectory by at least 6 months.
Under scenario two, we’ll eventually get to scenario one, but later.
And hey, we may pick up another Weddle or Day with 10-12.

Realistically, despite the result last weekend, I still believe that the game between us and North in round 18 will decide who finishes last.

It will be interesting none the less to see how both teams are positioned by the time that game rolls around.

West Coast will get McGovern, Shuey, Nic Nat and Yeo all back after the byes. They should win some games at Optus in the run home with them.

If we have a really strong finish to the season then it goes hand in hand that the need for a top pick isn't so crucial. I would hope that any good form to the end of the season carries on into 2024. And it's not like you can't find excellent talent with a later first rounder. Day and Weddle are the proof.

Always prefer winning to losing. I think the big thing for me is no matter how we finish this year is starting next year strongly.

Nothing more frustrating than finishing the year strong after a slow start. Only to do it all again the next year.

Instilling a winning culture is way more important than any draft pick imo.

The benefits of winning now are sooooooooo much more profound than the hope of winning later.
It generates. It imprints. It instills. It inspires. It coalesces.
It's self fulfilling.
The running start to a hard wired expectation and confidence to execute for next season would be looked back upon as a pivotal moment for the next assault for glory by our glorious Club.

Develop our core group of kids.

Give other kids the incentive should they become homesick over the next few years to come home to VIC to a team building a winning culture and the foundations of premiership success.

We will have our ups and downs over the next few years but I’m confident of another flag this decade. Maybe 2.
