Analysis I LOVE the BS snipes and snubs from the media

Two comments:
1. Just wait until we are beaten.
2. We are appalling at media management. As much as I worship the ground he walks on, AC despises the media and as a consequence we as supporters are collateral damage of this distrust. Our Club does not reach out to us, is inferior at messaging and informing us of its plans and intentions. I have someone very close in the footy media, and he constantly says we are our own worst enemies, we allow others to control the media about us and NOT the other way round.
He says, Within the footy media circles we are despised (even those who support us) and it can’t wait for the negative story or the opportunity to create one.
Even Jeff has tired of his member communications. At least these used to supplement the lack of promotion and communication about our club in the broader media.

Pretty slack role, if you can get it, as the Media Manager of the HFC. Straight bat, deflect, defend, forget about the front step and promote.

Top, An interesting post although I think it's a stretch to say 'Clarko despises the media'. It's just he doesn't suffer fools lightly and rarely engages in any of the media's BS narratives.

A recently retired TV producer (and Hawks supporter) who I've known for many years told me a while back that Clarko/the Hawks were/are elusive and guarded with the media which he suspects is mainly attributed to some past misrepresentations including a few incidents involving Clarko with a few prominent industry journo's. I recall in summary he mentioned:

Aug 2009 - Clarko abuses Matthew Lloyd.
Despite Clarko's written and verbal apologies to the EFC and Lloyd, the media (specifically M Robinson) hounded him for months after the incident. Then in 2013, after Clarko had some choice words with opposition players at a Box Hill game, Robinson followed up with a long sensational article that included 'Clarko's Rap Sheet'.
Nov 2010/Mar 2011 - Caro reports Buddy Franklin incoherent at Melb Cup and Grand Prix.
For some reason C Wilson had an obsession at the time of reporting Buddy's off field activities and when the Hawks wouldn't respond she labeled Clarko a coward. They have rarely spoken since.
Oct 2013 - Mike Sheehan - Clarko new Eagles coach.
About a week prior to the Grand Final Sheehan's headline was' Clarkson signs with Eagles'. Clarko was livid and 48 hours after appeared on live TV with Sheehan, and to paraphrase, he said he was surprised their long term close relationship was not worth more than a BS headline!
April 2015 - Clarko's altercation with a Port fan.
Despite a police report, full AFL investigation, support from Port and an apology from the instigators certain journo's (namely D Barrett) continued to critisise Clarko's handling of the situation. Mr Barrett and others wrote articles asking how a senior coach of a 'family club' can continually be involved in violent and abusive behavior...
Oct 2017 - Tracy Gaundry and Richard Garvey's resignations, Kennett's reinstatement.
The AFL and related media had a field day with this. The AFL were opposed to Gaundry's appointment from the outset. The second day on the job her husband has a heart attack that nearly kills him. Understandably with a limited focus on her new job she resigned. Despite the Hawks releasing a media statement explaining the boards recent movements and Gaundry's circumstances the media to this day have never posted a retraction claiming she was sacked.

In terms of information and transparency with members I agree with your sentiment but I also think the Hawks website initiatives such as HawksTV shows, Fitz & Chips, Around the Club, Documentaries etc., while not professional productions, are at least an attempt to engage members as opposed to the tabloid style, click-bait rubbish that is sadly 90% of what the AFL industry media produce.

Awesome post and great insight from your mate in TV. Production. I'd speculate said person knows Clarko well enough to be in such conversations.

No love lost with Slobbo or Caro and no care given.
Absolutely. Has no time for either

All those names just highlight just how poor AFL media is in Victoria. How slobbo still has a job is honestly amazing.

Clarkos presser if you watch closely is his way of connecting with fans through media.

It's no better anywhere else mate. We can only go further down, have a look at US sports media.

Only a matter of time before we have our own Colin Cowherd.

Who else remember Barrett's "exclusive, breaking news" on the Footy Show where he highlighted that the AFL Integrity Department was performing an audit on the deals of (I think it was) Hodge and Mitchell? They beat it up so much and made out like there was something dodgy going on and to "watch this space". Nothing ever came of it as far as I'm aware. Shit like that is why Barrett is a trash, tabloid writer.

Long time lurker, first time post:
Just wanted to add my two cents (all he's worth) to the Barrett conversation. I think one of the reasons he hates the Hawks is because one of his first ever 'scoops' years ago in the Hun was an 'exclusive secret dossier' he had uncovered rating HFC players' deficiencies. From memory, it turned out to be a couple of emails exchanged between Hawk fans, and not official at all. That alone should have been the end of his 'journalistic' career.

But somehow he has survived, even though he doesn't know the difference between 'sliding doors' and 'cause and effect'.

Slobbo, Carro, Carey, Barrett etc.... I haven't read anything they have written for years. I wouldn't even know if they were still around other than their mention in the forums here. They are totally irrelevant to me.

Also the yearly stories from Caro “Clarko is out of Control and needs to be reined in” and “Kennett is out of control and needs to resign.”

I thought the dislike from the media was also to do with HFC setting up their own studio at Waverley and only inviting the media when HFC wanted them there.

Been going since the 90s at least (When I started following footy).

40+ yrs up to that point would drive some insane.

2000s the drug thing - the media made many references, and it stuck. The hawks puting an injunction on it hurt the media. They lost a major story. It isn't just AFL media, all media hate it when they're silenced. It is also there where the hate really launched.

Clarko - hated as a player, carried over into coaching. He gives the media nothing. They can't write stories on him saying "We weren't good enough." Compare that to the media friends that always whinge when a player is sneezed on...

I also love the highlight reels on AFL.com.

I just watched the Hawks vs Geelong highlights and going off that you'd have thought the cats won by 50pts. Apparently any of their goals are highlights, bit ours must have been lucky.

Off topic but my home town team Huddersfield town just released a new shirt sponsored by paddypower (online betting) but the shirt has no sponsors logo. The sponsors are doing ambush marketing and the club turned out for a per season game with an ugly sash on it with the words paddy power huge and contravening FA regulations.

Them after a day or so they released the official home and away shirts with no sponsors logo. They are selling like hot cakes. The 15 shirts used for the pre season game have been snapped up in an online auction for local charities

Just quietly, didnt the clinic which had private information stolen serve the injunction?

I saw that last week.

And Huddersfield Town are now the laughing stock of the whole football world!

Very impressive like to posts ratio

Don't reply!

It's as though there is a section of the media who like to pretend the Hawks don't exist. The sporting shows I do watch, admittedly come out of Sydney, and they prefer to devote their time to rugby. When they do discuss AFL, they focus on Sydney and GWS. On Bill & Boz last night, Rodney Eade was asked about the "Geelong match" and he talked about Geelong and the reasons they lost. If it wasn't for Boz who is a Hawks fan, we wouldn't have got a mention.

There are too many people employed in the media who have an axe to grind with Hawthorn, most of whom continued to be humiliated by them on the football field. Rodney Eade hasn't been happy with the Hawks since we weren't interested in him as a coach and appointed Clarko instead. You wouldn't think he is a Hawks premiership player. There's a lot of jealousy when it comes to the Hawks.

I have learned not to pay too much attention to the media, just a pack of idiots trying to push their own agenda rather than present a balanced opinion.
