I wonder if Perry would be happy to accept a one year deal now?

I think his career ending is premature, he isn't the gun some people claimed he was but I thought he played okay in the few games he had this year given in many of those games we were getting pole-axed and he still did a reasonable job.

He was shafted by the clubs that talked him up like Richmond and Hawthorn who obviously talked to his manager and fed them a line about his worth and come pay day were found wanting.

There is a lesson here for our young recruits, do not buy the crap managers and other clubs are offering unless they commit to a deal. I think his manager has a lot of responsibility in Perry being out of AFL football. He was offered a 1 year deal and the club said they want the young players who are not regular senior players to remain on 1 year contracts to keep them pushing hard and playing for their careers.

What this will do is put a lot of doubt into the next young kid who is thinking about trying to push the club for more cash or a longer contract period. Just be happy to keep playing AFL footy and if you want more cash or a long contract, bust your buns and do something that will make the club want to lock you in long-term.

Did the club actually offer him a one-year deal or are we relying on the same sources who claimed Richmond and Hawthorn had him in their sights?

I totally agree, he was unlucky in some ways but wouldn't have finished anywhere near the top 10 in the Liston. He never showed enough to warrant selection with any performanes in the VFL. The only hope for he and many others in the same boat is to have an eye catching year ala Edwards last year. IMO perry is not nor will ever be good enough to Finish top 10 even in the Liston. I'm afraid thats the end of him so instead of who, what and why some of our fellow posters should start looking to the excitement our new faces bring

Apparently came from Perry himself.

Somone said they spoke to him early on and (from memory) he said he wanted to stay at the Roos but the club had only offered him one year and he wanted two.

Firstly, Hawthorn haven't chased anyone quick for 3 years. Hawthorn will be easy beats. One quick bump, and they'll fall onto their shells. Well and truly screwed then.

And yeah, Josh is quicker. Michael Stevens was quicker than Josh, and equally capable of playing on big forwards.

Firstly you don't know sh*t, stick to analysing your own mob Muston Franklin Birchall and Ellis are all quick. Try again.

Easybeats??? I don't think so. :) building a very healthy squad the young hawks. :)

It's a popular perception, but when you haven't made the finals since 2001, I'd wait for some results before confirming this statement.

2001??

No way!!

Ha ha aha ha haa

That's hilarious.

Its a totally different side to what we once had, the improvment in the kids has been remarkable with even more talented kids fighting it out for selection.
North didn't exactly have a great year so i wouldn't be talking, especially when you get held goaless for 3 quarters by a side you claim to be the easy beats. :)

Now look what you've done NB.

Aimed at matty, seized upon by above gumby. Not my fault.

Because I am bored....

Too bad for Pez, isn't the only underperforming young player to be flicked out of the league. He has a choice to work harder than ever before and hopefully grab any chance given (like Pratt & Edwards) if he goes about it the right wway, all is not lost for him yet.

I think we'll see more of these situations arise with rookie players..heck, unbelievable how some folk here have totally forgotten about guys like Dylan Smith..just to name a few that weren't up to it. Get over it you Pez heads.

Yeah, I want a Ferrari but I have to be realistic and settle for something more within my means. :p

It doesn't matter if Perry wanted a 2, 3 or 5 year deal. Club was only prepared to offer one, one more than anyone else.

Spot on.

The most glaring conclusion to come out now it's all been said and done is that he was obviously getting some bad advice.

I never thought he was THAT good. Looked okay at times, never did much, never played on anyone, so maybe just gone. I think it is kind of funny lol.

We are not claiming to have a world beating side or to have remarkable improvement. We do have a bit of quality in the list IMHO but until there are any results on the board - no point boasting about what might happen.

You guys have done sweet FA since 2001, yet are boasting about this remarkable group of young players. Lets see them win enough games for the finals at least, not to mention top 4. Then talk.

St Kilda was saying similar things 4 years ago. What have they won since?

He is very young for a KPP with only a handful of senior games, you don't look at them and expect them to play like Scarlett after a few games. You look for how they compete and see if there is scope for improvement as they develop.

If you line up the video of Perry vs Dawson as defenders then you would see a radical difference, both are inexperienced but Perry knows where to stand on players, how to approach marking contests and how to contend which is why I was surprised Hawthorn was prepared to offer Thornton $1 million over 3 years but didn't take a shot at Pez for basically nothing.

He would be a better prospect in a key defensive position than Dawson or Thurgood. Thurgood would need to add 30 kgs to get into Perry's size.

I was surprised that Perry didnt even get rookie listed.

Is there more to this than meets the eye.

He must of fcuked up somewhere and as a result has gotten round to the other clubs.

Thing that confuses me is that Richmond, Carlton and Hawthorn need more depth in defence and Perry could of at least played as a filler.

what the hell happened with this one??? not even rookie listed by anyone?? is there something missing here, or do roo supporters just completely over estimate players worth because this guy was being touted a 3rd or possibly 2nd round pick! cant believe NO ONE even wanted him for free OR the rookie draft??
It is fair to suggest that some NMFC supporters on this board over estimate our players worth.

As for Joel Perry however, it is fair to suggest that he put in some reasonable performances at senior level this season and is a little stiff to not have been picked up as a Rookie but as the Cookie Monster once said "That's how the cookie crumbles".

As someone else said if this guy is as good as what people say he is he should have little trouble dominating at VFL level and getting drafted in 2007.

With out Edwards at Frankston, his Goals Against him avg will fall dramatically.

I think he has that added motivation to get back in 2008 but if he cant get back in 2 da AFL, then it would be another unfulfilled potential
