Folks of the M&E board - you may be aware that I've recently had to consume a large portion of humble pie when I discovered that Top Gun is ACTUALLY A ****ING GREAT MOVIE. Many people over the years had tried to convince me to watch it, but I stayed staunch until last weekend when I finally broke.

It was awesome.

Now, my husband is taking advantage of my newly opened mind, and has put together a list of 'iconic' movies that I haven't watched over the years. I'd love to open this up to the floor for feedback and other suggestions.

No horror, slapstick, or gross out comedy ploise.

  • Risky Business
  • Indiana Jones
  • Dead Poets' Society
  • Wall Street
  • A Few Good Men
  • Die Hard
  • Rocky
  • The Godfather
  • The Birdcage
  • The Shawshank Redemption
  • Seven
  • Gladiator
  • Heat
  • Braveheart
  • Casino
  • The Green Mile
  • Goodfellas
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Seven
  • Fatal Attraction
  • Scarface
  • Rain Man
  • Breakfast club
ETA: I'll cross out movies as I watch them

Seven
Gladiator
Heat
American Beauty
Braveheart
Casino
The Green Mile
Million Dollar Baby
Castaway
Forrest Gump

Im not saying all of these are iconic, but these are must watch movies from the era of the 90s and 00s IMO.

In terms of quality I would be surprised if any in here did not give almost all these movies a 7/10 or more. Some are 10/10.

Add Godfather 2 and Rocky 2 to that list.

Honestly I could probably list hundreds if I sit here for the next hour lol
Full Metal Jacket
The Social Network
Same, I listed movies that I felt that are universally loved by almost all on here. Maybe a couple could be removed from my list, but almost everyone on here would love the list.

Bonus points if you reco movies from the 80s cos I've barely seen any and I'll get major wife points
Die Hard
Full Metal Jacket
Stand by Me
Ferries Bueller's Day Off
Scarface
Beetlejuice (debatable but it's unique and iconic)
The Terminator
Back to Future series
Ghostbusters
Predator
Scarface
Rain Man

You guys are awesome! I've seen some of these (e.g. Beetlejuice was one of my faves when I was a kid!) but there's LOTS on here to keep me busy.

Admittedly I'm prejudiced against Tom Hanks so I don't know if I'll watch some of these but I'll report back on the ones I do.

I've read the options out to the husbando and the ones we've added to our list so far:

The Shawshank Redemption
The Silence of the Lambs
Seven
Gladiator
Heat
Braveheart
Casino
The Green Mile
Goodfellas
Saving Private Ryan
The Silence of the Lambs
Seven
Fatal Attraction
Scarface
Rain Man
Breakfast club

Going to go down the sci-fi route (because it's my favourite and it often gets ignored when listing classic movies) and say that this list should hopefully be enjoyable...all are iconic in their own way and some cross genres (I left out Aliens and Predator because you said no horror).

  • Blade Runner
  • The Matrix
  • ET
  • Total Recall
  • District 9
  • Interstellar
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Inception
  • Blade Runner 2049
  • Edge of Tomorrow

I left out Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Terminators 1 and 2 as surely you've seen them by now lol.

OOooh I've always been a bit anti sci fi (except for Star Wars) but I'm trying to broaden my horizon. Haven't seen Jurassic Park hehe so might start there.

Perhaps not as iconic as some but St Elmo's Fire is my favourite 80's flick. Rob Lowe (with an 80's haircut of course), Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andie MacDowell.

I really don't think it get's more 80's. Great song too

Just gonna give a bit of a rundown of your OP mentions:

(masterpiece)
The Godfather

(impressive)
Indy (the 80s three)

(decent, definitely recommend)
Wall Street
Rocky
Die Hard
Risky Business
Dead Poets Society

(fun starry genre films for their time, but with flaws)
A Few Good Men
The Birdcage

all of these are worth seeing and owning and watching multiple times. some are more iconic and timeless than others but all fit the bill. all are very accessible and can be enjoyed on first viewing.

fwiw, I like the original Top Gun more than all of these save Godfather. Wall Street might be the most similar option here, bit stylish with ambitious cutthroat characters and similar personal journeys, as well as being very period contemporary and fun, tad more critical of premise subject/work field.
