I’m not suggesting playing all the kids but to suggest playing kids this year is going to hurt 2019 is crazy.

As for which senior players, who is suggesting dropping players next year? As for who gets selected next year, it should be based on form not just a golden ticket because you are a senior player.

Its too early to stop playing our best possible side. I will agree with you if we lose the next three. Until then we are a chance. And if we make it to the 8, we would have beaten most of the teams in the 8 along the way. Sloane and Tex should get much, much better with more fitness. We will get Gov and Smith back who were missing from last years GF. Eddie and Lynch still to come back into this weeks team. This team that we have is good enough to win a flag. To be in that type of position doesnt come around very often, we should be trying to nick one. We won our only 2 flags coming from the bottom of the 8.

Edit: Shouldnt say bottom but in 97 we had to win 4 finals to do it

When we lose to Richmond badly, we will be 2 wins and percentage from 8th. If we clammor to 8th, we will have to play away against each team unless we face Port. Thinking we will win a GF from there is fanciful.

We'd have to play 4 quarters like we did in the last on Saturday to have any hope of beating Richmond.
Geelong I feel we have a chance. If we lose on Friday night that means we are one loss away from not making it.
If by some miracle we win 6 of next 8 we would probably also need to win big due to our % being crap.
I just can't see us doing it. We will drop at least 2 in the run home, more likely 3 or 4.
Would be shutting up shop and making sure we are in the best position to maximise the draft.

And im not advocating we dont play kids. I didnt say it would hurt us in 2019 as long as we do it in moderation and not just spamming kids. I love that we are doing the right thing. Im just saying we dont need 10-15 guys in the squad with less than 50 games.

You cant drop a bunch of senior players for 6 months and then expect them at their peak in 2019.

I think we are arguing with different people anyway.

I’ll take that. Especially with the players currently on our list back. Having home finals didn’t help us last year. We won our flags off prelims at the G. If we make finals I give us a chance. Especially if we travel to Melbourne. Perth and Sydney not so much.

Home finals didn’t help us last year? We won our two home finals easily and lost our away final badly.

They didn’t help us win the flag. We would be better for the dry run with a prelim at the G. But harder to get the win. But at the end of the day, id rather give us the best chance of winning a flag. I really believe that getting a win at the G in a prelim would give us more chance of a flag than getting through at home.

Spoiler: we aren't winning the flag.

Thread should have been called -
If we make the bottom 8, can anything happen?

Lets face it those that are astute posters know that even if the remote possibility of us making the 8 happens, we will get knocked out in week 1 or 2. However the ramifications could be felt for another 10 years. If this is truly cream of the crop young talent with local SA kids, then tanks have to come out given our year is shot. If we were wining and entrenched in the top 6 or 4, then naturally we should aim for September GF. The reality is far different. History is there to tell us how this year will pan out. We need to make use of a strong draft with strong SA talent.

Do I think we’ll do it. Hell no. At best our form is patchy and at worst our form is diabolical.

Do I want us to do it. **** yes. I dont give a toss about going low for the draft. Toumpas and Jack Trengove, Ben Kennedy, Aish. There have been highly touted SA picks before. Some of them turn to ass.

Winning culture is better than all the low draft picks. Just look at Carlton and Melbourne’s last decade. GWS look like they’ve ****** their window.

Teams that are shit are usually shit for a while. Lets try not to get too shit.

I wouldn't say getting into the bottom 6-8 teams in the league is in the same boat as Carlton/Melbourne, more just taking advantage of a shit year on and off field.

A part of the problem with high end SA picks is where they've ended up, which being at Adelaide prevents that from being an issue due to our development success/able to protect them early with hardened bodies.

Review thread after Geelong in 2 weeks
Yeah, sensible. I just got in here, so apologies if I repeat others.
Richmond at the G have been formidable, even if they were gifted unfairly that final vs Geelong last year + that Cotchin farce . Knocking them off this week would be huge, especially if we beat Geelong the week after.
If we win those 2, we're worth a crack at the Flag. If we lose'em, draft picks and 2019 would become our priority.

Squiggle is predicting 1 point losses to Geelong, Brisbane and Melbourne. I don’t think my heart could take that kind of a pounding.

Imagine this board if we had 3 one point losses in a row.

Skwiggle has us losing 6 straight from here. If we drop the next three it's time to send the boys off for surgery and see about recruiting Andrew Russell

Did anyone tell squiggle we got some players back last week, will likely get more back this week and probably some more by the time we play melb in round 19? If not, squiggle may be underestimating.

Thanks for the info, above :thumbsu:.
Made me wonder if any team has actually had 3 consecutive 1-point losses, or even say less than a goal.
You're right, though, the melts would be white-hot.
I think Richmond lost by small margins 3 games in a row around mid last year. Close losses are practically the same as close wins, it only takes a couple good/bad bounces or umpiring decisions.

Probability would say we won't be making the Finals, or won't be going far if we do reach the Finals. Probability will count for jack if we somehow pull 2 miraculous wins over the next 2 weeks! 9-7 would look rather nice! Conversely 7-9 and we can kiss our chances goodbye, and I hope we're smart enough to try more kids, rest Sloane, Tex and all the other leaders. Make Doedee temporary captain while we're on a mission of "trying the kids" aka "tanking".

Yeah ... or accidental friendly fire (Douglas/Gov)! It wasn't bad enough that Motlop mopped-up the bounce for that goal, but it put Gov out as well.

Tex doesn't need a rest now. He's rested, and needs games under his belt.
Ditto, Sloane, but at 7-9 I'd be asking his intentions for 2019. If he doesn't commit, then by all means "rest" or "manage" him until he does.
I think also we've run out of kids to try (?). From what I've heard Jarman (fitness) and Edwards (build) are not ready, but we could certainly get more games into The Fog, Gooch, Poholke, Murphy, Wilson, maybe try Himmelburg etc.

Would be a good time to teach Atkins how to tackle and CEY how to chase. ;)

Our only very remote hope. Win every remaining game and hope other results favour us so we can get the double chance. 5th or 6th will not do it no matter how well we're playing. Sydney learned that lesson last year. Even double chance will not guarantee anything but it certainly helps.

But the truth is after dropping 4 winnable games and all the injuries this year, we've blown our chance for sure. We also have to accept that Richmond fans still celebrate our defeat more then their victory last year.

North went 4, 3, 2 in the 3 weeks before the Petrenko game :)
