If You Could Have Only One….

Idea of the thread is you can choose any current player in the AFL to add to our list.

Assume the player just magically falls within our salary cap, regardless of who he is.

Things to consider are:-

• Do you simply just pick the best player in the comp, like a Judd
• Do you pick a player for a position you think we are weak in
• Do you pick a young player for the future
• Do you pick someone for the ‘here and now’ because we are in the premiership window

Give some reasons why you would pick such player, rather than just giving a name.

Personally, I would pick a player for the ‘here and now’ as why worry about flags in 5 years time when we have the ability to win them now. I consider our weakness (relatively speaking) is a strong, crafty and reliable goal kicking smaller forward. Therefore I pick…..Steve Johnson.

Nathan Fyfe - can play up forward, on the wing or midfield.. Love his marking and ability to read play.

Crameri is a very good choice, but I'm going to have to go with Matt Thomas. He runs a lot and he gets 16 disposals a match.

I'd go Lance Franklin for mine.

I reckon someone from a "weak" club would be the answer.

A player who hasn't had the support he would get when he arrives at the strongest club in the AFL, from one of the lowest.

So my two would be;

Tom Scully.

Jack Riewoldt.

Imagine Jack Riewoldt, Chris Dawes and Travis Cloke in the same forward line, scary.

If you are to pick the best of the best though, there is only one man, and his name is Lance Franklin.

We would go 22-0 for the next 5 years with Buddy in our team (if he played every game).

So if I could have only one, it would be Buddy.

People might scoff, but I'd like to see how Liam Jurrah would do in our side. He's kicked 75.44 in 33 games playing as an undersized (188cm, 83kg) Full Forward, and would probably kick more with better supply and without the pressure and attention of being the #1 or #2 forward target.

Jurrah is kind of in the Michael O'Loughlin mould, in that he's a freakish Indigenous forward who is more of a third tall than your traditional Indigenous goalsneak/crumber type. He would benefit immensely from having one or two genuine key forwards (193cm+, 93kg+) to play along side, as it would allow him to freelance a bit more and play his natural game.

I know it's all fantasy anyway, but I'm trying to think of someone who could fill a need and give our side something different, who we could also realistically get, and I think Jurrah fits that bill. Given the chance, he'd excel in a side like ours IMO. We don't have many genuine medium forwards on our list either, so I think he'd be given a decent go if he we had him.

Medium forward is not a need in our side as long as we keep playing Dawes/Cloke and Brown. Too top heavy if you play a non-tackler like Jurrah alongside them, teams would just run it out too easy.

That's why Macaffer's so good structurally - he plays the role of a small defensively (which is key), but is also terrific in one-on-ones against medium defenders.

Nic Nat. Once he takes over from Cox as the number one banana at WC he'll take the league by storm!

Also its a guarantee to shore up our ruck division for the next decade. Ceglar and Witts look alright for the future, however Nic Nat right now is doing what we're hoping they'll do in 3-5 years.

Absolute freak ruckman who for the time being could play with Jolly then play the no.1 role until Witts develops into a serious ruckman.

Would keep our premiership window open post Jolly like no other.

only problem i see with buddy is he is a one man show. he is good enough to handle it too, but to have him team up with cloke, dawes etc would see too many forwards attacking the ball going forward.

cloke is able to do more than buddy, but buddy does what he does better.
so much better.

and which of us is telling cloke to only attack certain balls.
