I'm glad we didn't get Paul Roos

Is that better than 7 asterisks?

The lingo around here confuses me.

EDIT: Roos is a jerk. Eat dirt ya big poser.[/QUOTE

Luthor,

I couldn't agree more that Roos is a big poser... he walks around like his own shit doesn't stink!

Very happy that we opted to go for Leppa instead of Roos... he was rated very highly at the Tigers and from what I hear they were annoyed when he left!

Bright future ahead for the lions, especially with these young guns recommitting!

Go Lions!

I remember on the dearly departed Mondayitis podcast Crackers Keenan stating that he thought if you merged Melbourne and The Bulldogs you'd get a good team (this was last year I think). Melbourne had a decent spine (remember this included an occasionally fit Mitch Clark) but ordinary midfielders and The Doggies had good midfielders but an ordinary spine. I think the Doggies have gone some way to improving their list although we know where all the talls went the last few years, but always had a winning culture (or at least a tough, play to win culture) but Melbourne lost Clark, have had OK recruiting but still have a miserable tanking culture.

That's a lot for Roos to turn around alone. I think the scarred comment is on the money and while a little alarming/ist I wonder if it presages a sweeping broom through the list.

The question is, how many of those players can turn that around outside of a Melbourne Club environment. Like recycled Bombers, recycled Dees are going to be a little on the nose.

The loss of Clark means the Melbourne salary cap would be in even greater dire straights if they can't fill that up with good trades and free agents. It's going to take some serious magic to turn that around considering they are going to have to overpay wasters to just hit the minimum even with the banking of unspent salary cap. I'm glad I'm not Roos.

I think he has done a good job, but he is way too pragmatic and that isn't necessarily going to bring back the Melbourne fans from their ski trips to watch them play unless they become the toast of the town stylewise.

As much as I hate Roos, he is a master in this particular re-jigging work. Free salary cap is going to play right into his hands.

For experience, he can bring in Malceski and ROK. Brad Sewell's an option too. All the hard working, rugged players who can compliment the list more, which will be very similar to the Daniel Cross trade.

For youth, he can target someone similar to Tyson again this year. He can overpay for that particular player but that'll complete the midfield build with Jones, Vince, Viney, Tyson and Salem. If one of the GWS forwards like Jaksch, McCarthy partners Hogan that'll work out perfectly as well. I am fairly certain Roos will steer clear of high priced targets like Patton, Cameron and Boyd. Not his style to go and overpay for someone but will always be targeting the fringe players.

Roos will get Melbourne to be a very competitive, mid-tier team next season. This season is down the toilet and he's overplaying that to see if it can net a priority pick on top of everything.

The danger that Melbourne face, and the danger that we ultimately avoided is that Roos coaches for a particular style of play to prevail at all costs. And it only prevails with the right talent.

Roos can coach very very well. But his preferred game style is a minimum risk/minimum reward outcome that depends on great execution by the team with little margin for error. Right now, both Melbourne and The Lions do not have the skills to produce a season of winning minimum risk/minimum reward footy. A game or two maybe. When, or if, he has the Melbourne list in shape will be the time to judge his coaching there.

..
I think Roos will work, I think there will be a fairly large delisting / trading process at the end of the year.

Maybe...Would you say his support staff is as good as he had in Sydney?.... Not sure what the go is with his "successor"....wondering if that's going to be a Fox Footy special like 'The Recruit'....:p

Exactly right. Roos was never going to be able to fix Melbourne overnight, this is a case of "a coach is only as good as the players he has to work with".

I was always in the 'get Roos' camp but something struck me yesterday that was really disappointing from a coach.
In the post-match Roos seemed to separate himself from the club and the players, talking in an 'us and them' manor...not something you want to see from your head coach.

"They let themselves down, they let supporters down in particular and I reckon they put the cue in the rack. I'm embarrassed, the players can speak for themselves." There was another quote along similar lines but I couldn't find it.

I know the Dees were God-awful but surely a coach has to stand by his players through thick and thin.

Great post... I was thinking the exact same thing. Roos is using poor language atm. I actually think its affecting his players.

In his defence, not many of them are his players yet. You hope he would cut that rubbish out next season though.

I understand the argument that Roos has needed time to turn his list over, but Melbourne appointed him at much the same time as we appointed Leppitsch. Contrast Roos's press work after the last few losses with how Leppa behaved after the Freo match and the Adelaide match, or early in the season when everything was going against us.

Completely aside from his abilities as a coach, I think Roos has behaved poorly. I don't think Melbourne's circumstances redeem it either.
