I'm proud that my club is tanking!

Re: Open letter to ... 'I am proud my club is tanking'

You are a loser and an embarrassment to all true Melbourne supporters. Most Melbourne supporters are enduring this failure only taking some small comfort in the draft pick concessions.

Draft choices alone do not win premierships.

To the Melbourne people out there who love their club you have my sympathies, all clubs have some vermin in their ranks, he is nameless here on the boards but he is every guy you see at the footy singing the oppositions club song when your team loses.

This needed a thread of it own? Couldn't of been added too the thread your commenting on?

Can someone please explain the benefit of winning a meaningless late season win at the expense of a top 2 draft pick.

Don't give me the winning culture excuse. Richmond and Freo ended 2008 in a blaze of glory and look how 2009 turned out for them:eek:

The problem is the use of the words 'proud' and 'tanking' in the same sentence.

Exactly Tonk.

As I said before, the OP is an embarrassment, pure and simple.

We are as close to unanimous agreement on that as we could possibly be, I would say.

Good draft picks are not always in the top 20. To tank just for high draft picks is just pathetic. And to be proud of it, even worse. If you don't have the talent, you won't have to tank, you will lose and end up near the bottom anyway, that's the idea of the system. I'd concentrate on trying to develop a winning never say die attitude if I was the coach etc.

Re: Open letter to ... 'I am proud my club is tanking'

It would be impossible to know if Melbourne was tanking or not! They have a sh*thouse list and shocker of a coach. His record is simply apalling. Great appointment by that gutless twat Lyon.

This whole discussion depends on the definition of tanking.

Personally, I think all it means is to play as many kids as possible. They get vital experience and their development can be fast tracked. If they lose, that's fine, the club gets some handy draft picks, if they win, then the kids are better than you thought they were and they get to move forward together as a group.

In no way is tanking deliberately losing games. This does not exist.

My club is therefore probably 'tanking', and I am proud of it, but this does not mean I want to lose each week. I can see where the OP is coming from.

Re: Open letter to ... 'I am proud my club is tanking'

There are many levels of club development now.

The top teams have pulled away to give the lesser teams no chance to catch up.

Being good enough to get 8th and be bundled out in the first week by 5th is aiming too high for the Dees.

Tank more!!!

I couldn't care less what knobs on BigFooty think about me as a supporter, or my club, and I am too VERY happy that my club is finally doing the right thing and the hard thing by ensuring we get the best possible talent to our club.

Anyone who thinks that winning culture is based on winning rubbish games at the end of the year is as delusional as those suggesting that our list management tactics are a disgrace and will ruin our club.

I bet all of you will cry bitter tears when Scully and Trengove are dominating

I look forward to reading Bring Back Powells posts in 2-3 years time when the Dees are still wallowing in the bottom half of the bottom 8 with a new coach in charge. Can see the thoughts now, we had 9 top 20 picks in 3 years from 07-09 and we should be right up there contending for a flag, but those teams that beat us at the end of 09 are up there and our players keep losing games that they should be winning.

Re: Open letter to ... 'I am proud my club is tanking'

Not me :) I'd rather 9th for the next 3 years than get a wooden spoon

Same here, mainly for the logical reason: that 9th is higher on the ladder than bottom.

I will bet you RT, that in 2-3 years time, with all these early picks and talented young players starting to come through, Melbourne will be in a far stronger and higher position on the ladder then Richmond ...
And the ironic thing is that their best player wasn't an 30 year old former drug addicted that had spent an year out of the AFL system, and at least they stuck to their guns and didn't give up good picks like no 19 for recycled hacks like Jordy Mcmahon ...

Within an year or two, the Dees will replace Dean Bailey (he is a good list managment/development coach, but his gameday tactics and motivation skills are basically non-existant) with a club great like Todd Viney (who is highly rated amongst the assistant coaches in the league) and that is when they will start to climb up the ladder. They have a much brighter future then Richmond.

And then both of them turn into the next Scott Gumbleton and you sink further into debt and the fans and sponsors start leaving.

I look forward to Richmond's 7 year plan... oh wait

We are doing what every other club in our position would do and have done in the past.
Picks 1 & 2 are no guarantee of success, nobody is saying that, but they are much more likely to help us succeed than beating a woeful Richmond or North Melbourne when we've won 3 games in 17 rounds.

The initial post was a little misguided in its use of the term 'proud', because I think what the poster was trying to imply is that he/she is proud that our club is doing the hard thing to give us the best possible chance of succeeding in the future.
Our list was rubbish at the end of the 2006, and despite where we sit now, our list is close to 100% better and will become even moreso after this draft.

Anyone who dribbles on about us being crap and having no future is simply ignorant and knows nothing about our list. We are assembling a very good core group of talent and I'm bloody proud that we have tried to do that in the shortest possible time by maximizing the amount rewards we receive from the AFL for being a poor side.

WE DID NOT INVENT THIS SYSTEM, but it is 100% within our rights to use it as we see fit and I'm PROUD that we are trying to give ourselves the best possible advantage on draft day in the last uncompromised draft. That's what ruthless clubs do, and it's about bloody time that we stop being the AFL's weeping boys and actually did something that is purely in our best interest.

And to add to the points already made by our supporters... the overall content posted by Demons supporters on this thread makes it pretty clear that virtually all of us emphatically disagree with the OP.

Whether this, and the facts posted even by some opposition supporters on this very thread about our team, will deter people from posting insanely deluded trolls about a) us all supposedly being rabid pro-tankers, even though we are NOT, or b) making ludicrous and embarrassing stupid comments about our players, is yet to be seen.

This is the main board, NOT the Bay, no matter how much posters like "Juggalo", or "Edward", might like it to be...

PS- Incidentally Ruthless, you must be thinking of RICHMOND with those comments.

It is Richmond who are likely to still be "wallowing" near the bottom of the ladder in 2 years' time, and probably with another coach, after Rawlings is inevitably discarded, of course.

What other Richmond problems would you like to have a crack at us about, I wonder?

Geez... next you'll try and have a crack at the Demons for finishing 9th all those times and almost never making the finals :p

Anyone who thinks that winning culture is based on winning rubbish games at the end of the year is as delusional
A winning culture is based on, get this, winning, no matter what the game or place in the season. What kind of culture is it building in your younger ranks when they're constantly played out of position or pulled off the field when they're gunning it for the sake of getting your club another roll of the dice in the draft?

The vast majority of us Demons are already on your wavelength Shotties, as the postings on this thread clearly indicate our general disagreement and contempt for the OP.

In fact, your post is similar to a number of posts I made on the Demons board and on this board some time ago, long before this debate started.

But as AllStar pointed out, much as I disagree with him in his general opinion, any claims that we are "pulling off players when they're gunning it" are nonsensical, since we have had an incredibly low number of interchanges in the last 2 weeks.
