This may be true, but I don't think many WC fans would answer "Sydney" to the same question. I think Freo would take the points in that battle.
freo do but the swans arent far behind

Rhetorical question, we know it was very goshdarned awesome.
In retrospect, the results between these two sides during the 2005/2006 (and 2007) era were like something out of a Disney film about sport or something- just so many improbably close and ridiculously theatrical results.
Just to refresh your memory a bit...
So, Leo Barry, in the back pocket...heads along the boundary line, oh, good mark by Cox! Cox throws it onto the left... one last roll of the dice for the Eagle- LEO BARRY YOU STAR! The longest premiership drought in football history is over! "
Could we have a draw? I'll go with it now as the ball is kicked to the fifty, huge pack flies, Stenglein- Buchanan put the head down, got it out to O'Keefe- kick smothered! Chick! Hunter! Eagles by seven!
"Kerr goes into the middle, here's the moment for the Swans...Leo Barry's in there..Noone taking a backward step- Lynch! Just manages to get boot to ball- Waters keeps it alive, Waters is dog tired- now O'Keefe, the ball comes back to Waters, now picked up by Fosdike, Fosdike has got to get it moving, kicks to the fifty- Dempsters there can't take the mark, Glass will see it over, throw in! There can't be long, there can not be long to go. The West Coast Eagles, lead by a point, can the Swans do it? SIREN! Who would have thought the sequel would be just as good as the original?!"
There were just so many more memorable moments during that period-
-Hunter's final quarter screamer and goal in the 2005 QF, the hugely controversial free kick to Stenglein in that same game, followed by O'Loughlin nailing an absolute gem from the pocket to close the margin again in a quarter which ran to 35min +
-Cox storming down the wing in the 2005 Grand final and goaling from 50. Ablett kicking to Cousins in the goal square in that same game, Buchanan goaling to put them in front in the final quarter.
- Stenglein dribbling the ball through in the game at subi in 2006, to give the Eagles a 2pt win.
-O'Loughlin running into goal to give the Swans a one point win in the '06 QF and giving the bloke in the cheersquad a massive gobful in the process.
- Goodes goaling in 7 seconds from the opening bounce of the '06 GF final quarter, Armstrong's moment of glory, O'Keefe's freak goal in response (I still maintain Embley touched it )
- Kerr's great tackle to draw a htb in the dying seconds of Rd 1 '07 to seal another 1pter, and Bolton goaling from a free in the dying seconds of the return fixture that year, giving the swans a 5pt win after having trailed all day.
Just thinking back, I feel ****ing fortunate to have seen more than half of those games in person. From the 2005 QF which kicked off proceedings till rd 1 2007, the results were- Eagles (4pts) Swans (4pts) Eagles (2pts) Swans (1pt) Eagles (1pt) Eagles (1pt)... So many great moments. What have I missed?
Did they have a rivalry??? And what the hell does goshdarned mean???
yeah, because the only "real" rivalries involve collingwood, right? or carlton? thats what you victorian think isnt it? if it didnt happen in the 80s or before, its not "real"LOL...
Apart from that Browndog is right on the money.
Rivalry in a teacup.

minor, intracity, suburban VFL rivalries asie, IMO the only other modern rivalry that compares is collingwood/lions, and even then it compares UNfavourably.
In retrospect, how goshdarned awesome was the Swans/Eagles rivalry?

Ned Flanders, is that you?
LOL.. I agree.. wow 9 whole games.. yes 9 and its a rivalry. Wow what is going to happen when they play a 10th close match... Anzac Day? New public holiday in both states...
to OP. Grow up and if you are so young you did not see any football before 2005 read up on it, buy some dvds, get some books... but FFS grow up
A close game isn't always a good game.
Usually excrutiating to watch until the last 5 minutes.
There was more scoring in soccer games than in WCE vs. Sydney games
kind of agree with this comment.
The games were very exciting.
But for these 2 teams to be called rivals...the close contests have to continue, fans have to come out in numbers and they probably need some prime time clashes.
You can't call it a rivalry if we are talking 'in retrospect'....rivalries continue and endure even when the teams are at the bottom of the ladder. Collingwood and Carlton provide a massive spectacle no matter what ladder position is.
But, the games were highly enjoyable and there is a great basis for a modern day rivalry to form.
But I'm sure West Coast would consider Fremantle their arch rivals. These matches are always blockbusters...and usually unpredictable as to the result. Plus there are always reports, fights, bumps and some pretty exciting football, regardless of ladder position.
Dave, you're absolutely correct but it's common for Eagles fans to dismiss any rivlary with Freo as beneath them, and the only reason we keep winning derbies is because we want to win TOO much.
Meanwhile, they keep trying to be noticed by Essendon.
God forbid two teams respect each otherAgree, not to mention both those grand finals lacked any spite was like watching a qualyfing final more than a GF.
Erm.Since when does a handfull of close games equal a rivalry. Sure, whilst it's still going on you would like nothing more to beat the other, but in years to come, they it will most likely been seen for what it was. Two teams, both at their peak, giving their all.
Pies and lions fans have all (mostly) moved on. At the time, we would have killed to have got one up on the Lions, but we didn't, we move on, and now they're just another team. Hell, even the 'Dick Pratt Vs the ACCC' rivalry is bigger.
+ 1 to that.Rivalries are not just built on close games, but the quality of the teams and (often) events off-field.
eg Port v Adelaide is Port's biggest rivalry, despite the following stats head-to-head v Brisbane.
22 games, with 9 matches having margins of 0,0,1,2,2,6,6,7,and 10 points.
From 2001 through 2004, the two teams combined had a W-L record of 140-39-1 against other teams, and 5-5 head to head.
That's how good these two teams were head-to-head over this era, and why it was so disappointing that Port Adelaide screwed up a couple of finals so we didn't get to see them head-to-head for 3 or 4 GF's in a row.
+ 1 to that.
