Out of 3 boundary throw-ins in the last quarter, Macrae took two of them and Bont took the other.
That sums up our terrible ruck situation.
English and Young are part-timers, Martin was cooked and second string to the Big O at Brisbane, and Sweet is not even rated.

So Bont and co have decided to drop off to be in a must win round 23 game? Heard it all now
Not necessarily a conscious decision and even next week they're not in a must win situation. But the lack of intensity is a clear indication that they're not in a no tomorrow situation.

Our season ultimately rides on the back of those 6, and they will know it.

Ashamed to say that the combination of the dogs disgraceful performance (and seemingly quashing our 2021 dreams), being in a lockdown with a ten month old, and the internet dying, put me in a foul mood last night and I had a verbal flare up with my wife. I’m ashamed because it’s just a game but it really does get inside you both in a good way and a bad way, and has the ability (with me) to put me in a dark place.

No doubt our seasons rides on those 6 and personally I think there can be some structural adjustments in the centre bounces. But it’s not their intensity that is at issue.

I was at the ground and when Bont runs the length of the field again and again only for the ball to be turned over and then he chases defensively running past Garcia, JJ and Hannan who had done very little work it’s shows me 100% it’s not the intensity of our 6 midfielders that is lacking.

I disagree. I believe it's the intensity in the area that we need it most is what's missing. They have to dominate clearances...have to. They have to lead there. It's on them, the senior group plying their trade better than the opposition and leading by example. The organisation, physical pressure, hunger and intensity is not and has not been there. The opposition have wanted it more there.

No question of Bont running up and down etc but the source is the problem. We have a known weakness in the ruck but that's not changing bar a miracle from Martin so they have to deal with it. That requires resolve. They need to start hitting heavy and showing some urgency at the coal face or it's all over red rover.

Given we were so exposed last year in the ruck you would have thought they would have done something about it this time around. But nothing, and it may cost us again bigtime. Poor coaching and list management really

You can go harder and harder at the contest all you want but when the opposition structures up better in the centre bounces and there ruckman dominates and can put the ball where ever they like raising the intensity will do nothing.

Got belted in the midfield again. Has happened 2 weeks in a row after not really happening all year.

Kudos to the Hawks they really tackled hard and bought pressure without the ball.

I'm hoping our recent form is attributed to a heavy training load otherwise I'm a bit worried the wheels are falling off.

I can understand your pain. A realistic assessment of our form sees us playing Essendon in a cut throat final when two weeks ago we could have believed in a genuine tilt at a flag. I think we are all feeling flat and just a bit angry with the world. Let's regain a sense of belief and focus on the team improving in the next two weeks to pull us out of that "dark place".

We picked up Martin didn’t we?

It was going to plan until he got injured.

Like I said in another thread...

Could you all stop with the negative bullshit

The whole club has been very poor the last two weeks but it can be turned around.

It's not a fait accompli that we will lose to Port and then go out first week of the finals

This place has been toxic lately. We don't need this bullshit during lockdown in a pandemic

Lighten the fu** up

So much doom and gloom!

I think we’ll beat Port on Friday, and Melbourne will beat Geelong on Saturday. Let’s see, but I reckon the bookies will have both teams as slight faves in those matches too.

Leaves us 2nd with a qualifying final vs Cats…

BTW, the game against Essendon was not a terrible performance - Bombers converted a whole heap of unlikely shots and we missed a bunch ourselves.

Hawks game was another story though - we were just well beaten. First time that’s happened all season.

I think we'll cop a well deserved roasting all week and if we have any pride, we had better come out all guns blazing on Friday night. No excuses. Comfort zone at Marvel. Must win. Don't care how it's done, just win.

A trip down memory lane.

A big part of the intensity I'm talking about is focus. Heads in the game. Bont, Libba and Macrae are 3 of the smartest brains in the business. It's very much on them to anticipate, read, organise, communicate amongst and drive that group of 6 to get the job done and that includes changing structure up on the fly according to how they're reading it. There's no escaping it in my view. It's a lot of responsibilty on those 3 shoulders but that's where it lies. They've done it before but it's A game every week of finals or bust.

Thanks mate. Like everyone, I started to dream and it feels like the dream is slipping away. Add the rest of life’s pressure and it’s easy to slip into a dark place. All that said, you can regain form as quickly as you lose it, so the dream is far from over!

Won't happen.
The problems with this team extend well beyond the ruck now. The forward line is non-existent, the coach refuses to accept it and worst of all, the team is mentally shot. If the players didn't play like they were desperate to win this game, there is a very sobering reality check coming up against Port Adelaide next week.

My criticism of Bev and the MC comes back to their insistence on project player development rather than having players remain in their roles and strengths. For example, having JJ moved off the half back flank to a non existent, we’ll see where we can plonk you in, role.

Trengrove, BTC and Roughead were the ones that puzzled me the most and they’ve cut their nose to spite the face by getting rid of ready backup rucks. English doesn’t have the tank or frame to play first ruck and will take years to develop on his current trajectory. They took a massive gamble with Martin that hasn’t paid off, due to him being injury prone.

Cordy on the backline was a disastrous move, he’s not a 1v1 player and doesn’t have the strength as a marking/spoiling 2nd/3rd defender needs. Schache trade was a failure, nothing against the kid, and we’ve picked up players like Hannan to fill the void left by Dickson, Lloyd etc.

Add the issues with not playing Wallis and I think there’s a fair indication that they’re just hoping to find players who would miraculously stand up and deliver in positions and roles they’ve never done before .

I think they made a mistake not bringing in Wallis when Bruce went down, we need his leadership and ability to stand up in a big moment.
Wallis would look at Vandermeer's output yesterday and shake his head

Really you could add JJ, Hannan and Garcia’s output to that as well.

The decision comes back to structure and what structure we want to go with because since about round 6 it would seem the selection committee don’t know what structure to go with/stick with

Much of the blame is getting placed on the shoulders of an out of sorts and clearly tiring English, but as big an issue as that is. Its our mids inability to halt the momentum of our opponents in general play that is the real issue. The fact is that we have rushed back a number of players players particularly Treloar and Dunkley who are vital parts of our current midfield rotations from extended breaks with zero match fitness and its cost us dearly.

This is obviously a consequence of us having no choice but to play them given there is no possibility of getting match fitness into them in the VFL. This is having the knock on effect of cooking them early in games and passing the load onto the rest of the midfield. In a team that absolutely relies on its midfield its proved to be a burden they can't carry.

We rolled the dice in the hope that these two vital cogs would get match conditioning before the finals. Ultimately our strength may prove to be our Achilles heal and it may cost us the double chance and the hard fought wins that we banked when they weren't in the side. Or it could prove a masterstroke that gets these guys up to speed just in time.

One thing is certain we won't have to wait long to find out which one it is.

All for criticism after today, but just keep in mind we've won 15 games this year. 15. You're going on like we're bottom four.
The problem with this is that right now we are a genuine bottom 4 team that finds itself in the finals. Winning the first 10 games this season has masked how shit we have been in the last 10 weeks.

A trip down memory lane.
LOL I see that my only comment in that thread was that I was going to bed. I wonder what ungodly hour of the morning it was. Good. Times.

As much as I'm trying not to throw the baby out with the bathwater I simply can't escape the fact that we lost to a bottom four side with a third of their best 22 out.

Worpel
O'meara
Breust (2nd in their goal-kicking)
Moore (3rd in their goal-kicking)
Day
Sicily
Impey
Gunston

Honestly my only hope is that we're going through a massive training load at the moment in preparation for the finals. If not we're absolutely cooked.
You forgot Jiath, + Reeves/DGB managed who'd likely be there.
