Why are the security people handling these people masked? Why are they treating these people - who have not been charged with anything nor had any due process, as criminals? What’s with the chains and head shaving? Why aren’t there more ****ing protests over this demeaning handling of fellow humans?

Because millions of Americans and evidently (judging by this thread) people around the world have been conditioned by Trump, Musk and others to view these people as sub-human and the cause of all their problems so when they’re treated as such no-one cares. Ditto LGBTIQ people.

This shouldn’t be a surprise, it is straight out of the fascist playbook. There are countless examples like this throughout history. Unfortunately millions of Americans and evidently (judging by this thread) people around the world have never read even the most basic history book.

For any other government, accidentally adding a journalist to a chat about military airstrikes would be a crisis. For Trump’s, it’s barely a blip on the radar.

The first issue with this week’s Signal story, and perhaps most egregious, is that these officials were risking the lives of American military and intelligence members by sharing information outside secure channels. Normally for a military strike like this, classified information is discussed in secure facilities where mobile phones aren’t allowed. That’s because it’s nearly impossible to fully secure any mobile. The second is constitutional – and nothing new.

The third issue is more dire. It appears that government officials were either using an encrypted app designed to protect the free speech of average citizens to hide their decisions from the public, or because they have little to no respect for the public’s right to know what leaders are doing in their nation’s name. There is, of course, always a tension between security and liberty, but it seems these officials chose neither. They did not protect vital national security information, and they were attempting to avoid public scrutiny by acting outside the legal requirement to these decisions.

And I was reading elsewhere suggestion that they have all received training from project 25 on how to use this type of communication in all types of things so there is no record where they can be charged with crimes.
It is really concerning now.
Sounds far fetched but, the way things are going, The US under Trump will start a third world war, a famine, nuclear war, a pandemic, environmental disasters, or a global recession, concentration camps, all in the name of God and Trump. The most powerful nation on earth has gone rogue with no gate keepers and the RW behaving like they will never be stopped, they never have to stop. They-just-don’t-care.

I also can't understand why the Mods combined 2 threads. Both were imho travelling well as standalone topics. With all happening around the world, the international thread has turned into a a Trump and Elon musk hate thread.

assuming we can be civil to each other - which seriously not sure why this cant happen - then combining it makes it more interesting and effective to allow genuine debate rather than seperate echo chambers. thats my view anyway
