In Malta’s immediate sights are Holland, Serbia and Morocco.

RLEF seem to be doing a pretty good job.

Where's the IRLF's website and rankings?

Stuff the IRLF board, they'd only stuff it all up because Australia would have too much of a say, let the RLEF look after everything, atleast they are getting the own house in order.

Re: Malta ranked 12 in Europe

As there has not been a European seeding list before (that I'm aware of anyway) they just have to start somewhere and it will all come out in the wash once they start playing one another..

International League

Opinion from Crikey

League's tri-nations series heads south

Jeff Wall

Proponents of a stronger international rugby league program – myself included – will warmly welcome the decision to shift the Tri-Nations series to Australia and New Zealand at the end of the 2006 domestic season, to be played between mid-October and late November.

Date: 6 April 2006

The decision to hold the series down under after the long domestic season will have its critics, but if rugby league is to have a credible “international” or “multi-national” future there is little alternative.

Rugby league needs to ensure one of the attractions for its leading players is the chance to wear the green and gold of the Australian Kangaroos on a regular basis. Playing for the Wallabies regularly is one of the “incentives” the ARU offers league players like Mark Gasnier.

Matches will be played in Brisbane, Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, as well as at the Aussie Stadium. If the crowds at these centres don't measure up, and the series is repeated in 2007, regional centres such as Townsville, Wagga, Dubbo, and even Perth should be considered.

In one sense, the concept is a gamble by the ARL. It depends on all three teams being competitive. Last year, when the series was played in England, the Poms were well below par.

Provided the upcoming “Anzac” test is competitive – and it should be given the Kiwis tri-nations series win last year – there should be much greater interest in international matches in Australia than there has been in recent years.

Some club coaches and officials will no doubt argue it extends the season too long. But clubs with a number of test players – such as the Roosters and Broncos – adopt a sensible approach by giving their stars exemption from the start of pre-season training, and even trial matches.

The timing of the series also presents a challenge for the A-League soccer competition, scheduled to kick off around that time. It's a bold move by the ARL. It deserves to succeed, for the long term good of the game.

Kumuls to tour France

PNG Rugby Football League have accepted an invitation to play two Tests and two provincial side matches on the tour.

By HENRY MORABANG
PNG will tour France next year.

PNG Rugby Football League have accepted an invitation to play two Tests and two provincial side matches on the tour.

Deputy chairman of PNGRFL Board Albert Veratau revealed this yesterday.
He said PNGRFL chairman Sir Bob Sinclair had accepted the invitation from France Rugby League Football Federation.

Veratau said the PNG Kumuls will tour France next October.

The France Roosters will reciprocate the tour in 2008, on their way to the world Cup in Australia.

He said the touring squad would come from PNG-based Kumuls versus Australia-based Kumuls game.

Apart from this game, bulk of the members of the Kumuls squad would come from the PNG Kumuls team that beat Junior Kangaroos in Townsville, Australia last year.
Veratau said PNGRFL had made a request to the International Rugby Football League (IRFL) to challenge either British Lions or New Zealand Kiwis as part of their preparation for the Tri-Nations tournament next year.

It would be Pacific contest if Tongans and Cook Islands tour PNG next year.
Both countries have also expressed their interest to play against Kumuls either at home or tour PNG.

Tongans and Cook Islands are predominantly a rugby union island countries by are making a break through in rugby league.

Veratau said PNGRFL would be weighing things out to ensure "we provide the best team to challenge the visitors".

About the financial support, the Australia Rugby Football League (ARL) have indicated to extend their support to finance the chief executive officer's salary for another two years.

Veratau said the ARL financial support ends this year but with negotiation in Sydney last Thursday, things were looking positive for further ARL assistance.

Yeah that's right, but we won't tell the 300 plus Kiwis who represented NZ from outside Auckland or the 160 plus that came from the South Island, or the 20 odd NZ captains from outside Auckland.
