Re: International Rugby League & World Cup Qualifier News

The Dutch Rugby League squad has been named ahead of their trip to the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi next week where they play their second World Cup qualifying game against a home team fresh from their victory in Serbia.

After a home defeat to Russia the Netherlands need a victory in the 28,000 seater stadium of Lokomotiv Tbilisi to keep their World Cup 2008 ambitions on track. The date is a national holiday in Georgia with the hosts expecting 15-20,000 in the stadium and live national television coverage.

The Dutch team has twelve home based players in their named 17 and only six players remain from the team that lost 14-36 to Georgia in Hoek van Holland last April.

Two 18 year olds are in the squad as Benjamin Blom looks set to start at scrum half after an impressive debut of the bench against Russia and second row forward Vincent Grimbergen starts on the bench.

Debuts are also given to Bernard van Holstein, a big back row forward from the Hookers club, Hoek van Holland and Alex Hoogenzand from Sassenheim.

Jamie Groenweg returns on the wing after injury and Kees Foxon is moved to the problematic full back position after the loss of regular Rudy Stanford-Smyth (ankle) and his replacement Joel Barrett (shoulder), who both miss the trip.
The experienced duo of Jorik Moree (ribs) and James Howitt (knee) are both unavailable to travel.

It is also hoped that the team will have a meeting with Mrs Sandra Saakasjvili-Roelofs, the first lady of Georgia, who originates from the Dutch town of Ternuisen.

Mrs Roelofs was the first to telephone the NNRLB to ask the result of last season’s game and kit sponsors Forty-Twenty.co.uk have made up a special presentation team shirt with her name on.

Netherland squad to Face Georgia:
1.Kees Foxon (Nottingham Outlaws)
2.Jamie Groeneweg (Hookers)
3.Ronald van den Broek (Haagsche)
4.Duncan Taylor (Worthing)
5.Roelof Haar (Leeuwarden)

Cowboys talk to Papua New Guinea re: Development program

DEPUTY chairman of North Queensland Cowboys will hold close-door talks with PNG Rugby Football League Board on Saturday.Mark Travis will arrive in the country tomorrow as guest speaker at the Carbine Club luncheon on Friday.
PNGRFL chief executive officer Jeff Wade said while in the country, Travis will be talking with PNGRFL Board on a number of issues including development of an academy for PNG – joint project, long-term link programmes – incorporating internships/traineeship and corporate sponsorship opportunities.
It is likely that Travis will dwell on the past where North Queensland used PNG as one of the scouting grounds for their recruitment before their inclusion into the National Rugby League (NRL) competition.
The former North Queensland Cowboys Kerry Boustead was in the country scouting for the Cowboys but unfortunately managed to get only two players.
The only PNG player who had a brief stint with North Queensland Cowboys was Aquila Emil who later had a fall-out with the management and returned to the country.

GERMANY V AUSTRIA - SHOWDOWN SET FOR JUNE 25TH
by Matt Dwyer
Source: German RL Media

Rugby League Deutschland has announced that the groundbreaking Germany versus Austria match will be played at the Nonner Stadion, Bad Reichenhall, on Sunday 25th June. The match will be sponsored by Alpenstoff Bier.

The inaugural match between the two central European neighbours will coincide with an RLEF-sponsored match officials training course, targeting candidates from both sides of the border. "This is a great boost for us," said German official Simon Cooper.

"Uwe Jansen will be soon going into Schools in the Heidelberg and Heilbronn area to get youngsters playing the game. We also have a school near Stuttgart wanting to play as well." Cooper, who revealed that Germany is hoping to host a rugby league youth festival next year, has managed to provide the school with Rugby League World magazine each month as well as a rule book, rugby balls, DVDs and coaching aids.

Rugby League Deutschland polo shirts and T-shirts are now available from www.forty-twenty.co.uk, with the organisation's commission reinvested into the further development of the sport in Germany.

"In August we celebrate our second year," continued Cooper, "and we feel we have made reasonable progress although there is a lot more we need to do. We would like to thank all those that have helped us in some way whether it be sending DVDs of games to me to pass on or by sending money, buying our products or wishing us the best. It can be very hard sometimes and often you feel 'why am I bothering' but we stick at it and we hope to reap the rewards."

BELGRADE CUP

British Police 64 - Belgrade 0

FK Radnicki Stadium - Wednesday 24/5/06

GB were expecting a hot encounter FK Radnicki stadium did not disapoint at 33 degrees at 500pm. Around 300 locals came primarily for a glimpse of Milan Radojevic who was flown in from Queensland solely for the clash.
first points came from Eugene Swift after 7 minutes with an outstanding 80 meter solo effort, Swift showed the semi pro Aussie a clean pair of heels and Dan Atherton added the extras.

In the next five minutes swift again showed his speed with a try saving tackle as he tracked down the Serbain winger Gribic.

Dan Atherton showed his class with a nice gubber on the 20 minute mark which Newton took advantage of and Atherton converted. Andy Eastham then had a try disallowed on the 20 minute mark following a great break - the linesman
deemed him to be in touch.

Evergreen Phil Chappell showed his calibre with a try saving tackle again on the flying winger Gribic, the GB prop chased him down over 40 meters and bundled him into touch.

Dudley Hill player Jamie Brentley on 35 minutes put Chappell through the gap who offloaded to speed machine Swift who scored under the posts. Atherton added the extra’s - 18-0.

Just before half time a set play from Adam Newton and Andy Eastham paid dividends. Unselfishly Eastham popped it to Huy Le who greatfully accepted the try bringing the tally to 24-0.

The second half saw a revitilised spirited Serbian side, however they were no match for the powerful G.B outfit.

Pacey centre Andy Eastham dealt the first blow of the second half following a 60 metre jinking burst to score under the posts, Atherton added the extra’s.

The Serbs failed to contain Eugene Swift, much to their cost. On the 50 minute mark Swift scored a superb 60m solo try, bringing the tally to 36-0.

Two minutes later Swift again punished the Balken outfit having capitalised on an Adam Newton chip through, 42-0, conversion missed.

Powerhouse West Bowling Prop Phil Chappel carried for 40m, before offloading to Jamie Brentley, who went in out wide, conversion missed, making it 46-0.

Forwards Jaspal Singh, Richard Oxley, and Paul Divine battered the Serbian forwards repeatedley, allowing the backs to capitalise. Adam Newton went in under the sticks, atherton adding the extras, 52-0.

Try of the day came from nothing, Dan Atherton showed his class, with an outrageous back pass to Adam Newton, who scored next to the posts, Atherton converting for 58-0.

The final blow came in the form of man of the match Andy Eastham, who danced round the entire back line to score under the posts, all in all a quality performanc from a well drilled G.B outfit.
