Irritating people/things that annoy you in the gym

I live in Malaysia, so I have a choice between paying $60 a month for Fitness First or 50 cents a visit to the local govt gym which has equipment for the 1960's...not that I'm complaining, because all I need is a bar, weights and a squat rack. So the 50 cents job it is....

The annoying thing is that the "personal trainer" there likes to sit around smoking in the gym with his mates. I had to politely ask them to take it outside, they gave me looks of amazement like "how could our smoking possibly be bad for your workout?" :D

If they're wearing thongs drop a weight on their feet!

It's not like your average covered athletic shoe would provide that much more protection if someone decided to drop a weight on your foot anyway. But still, wearing thongs while working out is a bit stupid, as there's no way your footing would be as stable while lifting as it would be in regular athletic shoes. Better to go barefoot than wear thongs IMO, if they must insist on not wearing regular covered shoes.

Barefoot > runners anyway, so why not! :thumbsu:

spotted something this morning.

patrons who dont bring towels! nothing worse than seeing sweat dripping off a bench etc.

I've always seen the "Towels are Compulsory" sign but have never seen anyone issued with a Red Card for not bringing one.

good point.

in a few classes ive attended they are strict on the policy (well if youre a newbie they give you a friendly infraction).

i mean its just common courtesy isnt it????

sweat might also lead to slippery equipment (ie sweat on hardfloors) causing injury as well.

ive spoken to a few trainers/staff there who think the same. hopefully they'll start cracking the whip more

Walked into my gym once with my towel hanging out of my shorts and not in my hand as per usual and within about 10 seconds of walking in I was asked where my towel was (nicely of course).

As for a pet hate, the bloke this morning doing his circuit across 4 pieces of equipment, actually had 4 towels and put one down on every piece of equipment.

Supersetting between 2 is 1 thing, but 4 and marking them all off with a towel?

That's just completely rude!

Couldn't actually believe it myself. It was around 10, so fairly quiet except for mums on the cardio machines, but still very strange thing to do. Almost considered going out of my way to get in his way, but was in a rush.

Start doing a circuit on the machines he was already using or something lol.

I'm guilty of putting a towel on a bit of equipment and supersetting with a bit of equipment which not many people use (dont need to mark it).

But i'm always mindful of other people and will ask if someone wants to work in with me if i see them eyeing it off.

At my gym there are heaps of places to do unassisted chinups on. I'm a weak **** so I need to set up one of only two machines to do assisted chinups. Why then do unassisted chinups on that machine? :(

i'll tell you what shits me....***** and bitches who finish an exercsise, move on to the next piece of equipment, lay the towel down on it, then piss off to the bogs or wherever for 10mins.

Chuck the towel away then use it. If they come back let them know they can jump in in-between sets.

you believe that I wont use the equipment? im just saying it's yet an annoying thing people do. If someone is away from it for more than 30 secs (i'll give them a bit of time to get dumbells or a bar or weights, etc), or if theyve pissed off out of sight completely, it's off. there seems to be the belief amongst a lot of gym goers that plonking their stuff on something means theyve claimed it and they can piss off wherever for a while. Not in my book, unless they pay the extra membership for their towel.

it's not unlike ***** and bitches on public transport who place their bags on seats next to them and not allowing others to use it.

30 seconds is a bit stiff.

I put my towel down between a set, go fill up my bottle, take my jelly beans, and come back. I don't waste any time, but that's probably about 2 minutes.

that's between a set. you've already used the equipment (i presume) and have just taken off in the recovery interval - although, id still do this shit in between exercises, and not while on equipment. ;)

im talking about claiming the equipment before use and then pissing off and doing other things for a bit before starting to use it. id practically finish using it in the time it takes for the typical person who does this to get back. these disrespectful merkins shouldnt claim the equipment unless theyre going to use it immediately. otherwise, go do the other shit and then claim the equipment when your done faffing around.

i lift twice a week tops. i want to limit the workout to around 45mins and do very few but very intense sets per exercise. gym types i talk to tell me that i kind of follow the principles of a HIT workout, but to be honest I wouldnt know or do it intentionally. i fill the week with other activities such as field running intervals, swimming, cycling and anaerobic circuits. I find lifting lower volume, but extremely intensely for 'short' infrequent full-body compound workouts to be the most effective and efficient way to achieve strength and lean muscle gains. so i generally move quickly around the weight room without faffing about. claiming equipment without using it, completing sets in front of the dumbell rack, hoarding multiple pieces of equipment, or not unloading weights when finished holds me up so it pisses me off in that regard, but it's also disrespectful to other members who have to wait in general for these merkins...............particularly when its busy.

i'll add a 3rd type...........disrespectful merkins . they deserve an elbow and mid-air cross-kick to the head :D.

a total lack of respect in most situations is a pet hate of mine............as you've probably realised.. my general gripe of the day are parents who block the middle of a busy footpath with their prams, and have no concern for everyone else trying to get around them.

Busy periods are the worst. Love going early in the morning before the day starts. Don't have to deal with anyone other than a few people.

Also hate it when idiots leave their equipment around even though there are signs every where stating to replace your equipment "where they belong."
