Is Alex Rance the greatest defender to ever play in VFL/AFL history?

Before this year I had Scarlett ahead of him. Not any more. By the time Rance has finished I believe he'll have gone past him. They're the two best defenders I've seen. Daylight after them.

He’s what 28? Might play for another 2-3 years? So he’s not finished yet.

Can’t deny Bruce Doulls record as a defender - as much as I hate Carlton there’s no denying how good that bloke was.

Dench a bit before my time but apparently pretty good.

Scarlett of course and

SOS

But the best I’ve seen in the flesh is Rance. One game this year I tried to watch him mostly for the entirety of the game to appreciate what he does and FMD he works hard. Plus he is an amazing athlete, reads the game well and can cover ground/close speed better than anyone. Best bit was how much the oppo were shitting themselves anytime he was in the area.

Better than Scarlett, have watched some old replays of Geelong and Scarlett got some extra credit points as a result of being in winning grand finals.
Would probably have him ahead of Dench, Doull not sure, he was an amazing player. Notwithstanding all of this, he is the best Richmond defender I've seen and is up there with the others from other clubs.

He's very very good.

In some ways SOS was better - getting to impossible balls in the body to body contest. SOS seemed to have extendable arms and could shape his body to the opponent.

But Rance is a better intercept and rebounder I reckon, as well as winning impossible contests regularly.

I reckon it would be very close to Rance taking SOS' spot in the Century team right now (if it was redone).

Other than that guys like Dench were amazing, but Rance is better. Doull was about the best I've seen (Only Blues player I liked with Jezza). Still I reckon Rance is better.

Definitely in the conversation for GOAT

Alex is the best defender that Richmond has had in my 50 years of supporting them.
Bruce Doull is the best of the other clubs in that time, had some great battles with Royce.
Bit different these days in that there are no Locketts, Abletts, Dunstalls one out.
To be in the conversation with the greats is a fantastic achievement.
Club loyalties will always hold sway.

People piss themselves laughing when Rance is compared to sos, doull, Scarlett et al. Back in the day when sos was playing, sure he had Ablett, dunstall, plugger etc but back then u could chop arms, pinch, pull, hold, scratch lol. If buddy and josh Kennedy were around then they would definitely have the 1000 goals up

Its a broad question and unless your a historian it can probably only be answered by best each person has seen.

I saw Bruce & Scarlett, however was to young to appreciate and judge Bruce.

Alex is without doubt the best defender I have seen, better than Scarlett & Sos, however as people have pointed out the game keeps changing which changes the skills required and perception of player..
