Is Alex Rance the greatest defender to ever play in VFL/AFL history?

Great player ~ I wasn't being a spelling Nazi ~ He was an under rated backman

Just for the record, I didn't think you were being a spelling nazi and, in all honesty, I'm glad you brought the mistake to my attention -- he was (is!) a true Richmond man and deserves the respect of getting his name right. I appreciate you pointing it out.

Definitely serious

Fletcher isnt fit to tie rances boots
Fletcher is superior or at least even to Rance in essentially every aspect of the game outside of body-on-body contests... He was a complete all-round defender. To say they're not comparable is bizarre.

Hahaha he was superior in nothing except for doing peds to keep his old decrepit body going. Rance is on another level in comparison to Fletcher, at least a rung above.

Now, why the **** are you here?

He is the best player in the AFL right now. Dominates his position in a midfielder's league.

GOAT - impossible to tell, but up there with greatest defenders in the 45 years I've been watching football.

peter knights was a fair footballer that should be in this conversation played attacking football for his time
fletcher is being under rated
doull played on kp players like Hart
Bourke was awsome at every thing he did

In his last 100 games never took on the key fwd. Played loose or on the second or third best. Downgraded his cv. Otherwise exceptional footballer who occasionally kicked/tripped blokes.

You're correct they are comparable.
It's like comparing Fletcher to a bow and arrow and Rance a ballistic missile and saying they're both weapons of war.

Looking at it purely from an achievement perspective: Rance has already overtaken Fletcher. You can argue about looking at it from a feeling perspective, but if you sat there and compared based purely on the achivement front, Rance wins.

EDIT: **** I was searching for something and didn't realise this was the Richmond board.

That's how I stumbled on this too lol.

Achievements I'll agree he has a slight edge, the two extra AAs and AA captaincy is all that really separates them though. Both one-time winners of club BnF, while Fletch has another flag to his name.

Don’t forget to mention that Rance isn’t a drug cheat and Fletcher is.

Nice troll... Regardless of what we took, Fletcher made all of his achievements pre-ASAGA.

Try again.

Doesn’t change the fact that he’s a filthy drug cheat. He makes me sick. All of his records should be banished. He committed the ultimate low in professional sport. Stop tainting this thread with that dog.

Has anyone thought that there aren't the 100-goal forwards now (Hudson, Ablett, McKenna, Wade, Lockett, Dunstall etc) because the defenders are better?

It's possible.:p:p:p Maybe we are in a 'Golden Era for KPDs'.

Seriously, Rance is the best defender going around right now, and that's about all you can really say. He's been AA 4 straight years now, and, knowing how the AA selectors work that means, unless he falls off a cliff, he's almost certain to get the nod next year as well, at least. Plus one or 2 others just for turning up. So he's probably going to wind up with 6 or 7 AAs, like Scarlett - for whatever that is worth.

John James, Neil Roberts, Bernie Smith (to name but 3) won Brownlows playing as defenders. Verdun Howell also won, so at one stage, St Kilda had a Brownlow-winning CHB (Roberts) and a Brownlow-winning FB (Howell) in the same side.

Just with that, it's impossible to definitively say one way or other. I'm just enjoing having him play for us. He is fantastic to watch.

I could bite back but I'd rather not feed the trolls.
