Is Alex Rance the greatest defender to ever play in VFL/AFL history?

I always wonder why discussions about Alex Rance are limited to ‘is he the best defender’. Surely, Alex Rance has to be in the discussion for the best player of any position in the league right now. And perhaps he could even be in the discussion one day for GOAT for any position.

That will always be dominated by midfielders and kpfs

Agree. AA Captain must count for something.

2 more years of this sort of performance and he will be.

The difference between him and Scarlett and SOS is that he is far more flexible. He can play that intercept and hard running rebound role far better than those 2 blokes ever could (granted the game was different back in their days), but plus, when he has to, he can still go one on one and beat an opponent e.g. your Franklins and such. I reckon he also takes a heap more contested marks than those blokes, especially going back with the flight of the ball. He takes more marks "in the hole" than those two blokes ever did.

Sh*t I've talked myself into saying he already is the best.

As good as Rance is, I don't see the point in running down a player like Fletcher. Was a gun, who cares if he played on lesser players in his last 100 games, so did Scarlet up to a point as it released them to be attacking. And with Fletcher his kick was a weapon, easily the best kicking backman to have played the game. Fletcher usually played on Richo, maybe Ottens, and matched up with talls or smalls. Guilty of tripping and minor misdemeanours, so what, competitive streak. Under rated player who would make any teams BOAT back 6 team. I do think Rance is better though....
