Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

he’s done everything but win a flag -and that loss was a travesty as any neutral will tell you.
He will have many Coaching offers when he leaves - so it’s just a BS statement to say he can’t Coach.

Lift your game Doc.
I don't agree. Well, I don't think he's a premiership coach, put it that way. His time at Collingwood is up. He knows it and the players know it.
I don't think to many clubs will be knocking down his door.

Would Ross Lyon come on board with a Gia or Caracalla as an understudy whilst rebuilding happens for 1-2 years and manage the rebuild then oversee the coaching when said understudy is ready to take the reigns?

Ross Lyon is a defensive coach, as is Buckley.
The game, via the rules, has opened up and become an attacking contest. Reflected in the scores of the better teams.
Buckley hasn’t understood that, or is even capable of implementing such a plan. And I doubt Lyon would or could either.

This is true. Therefore I would suggest that the "fall on his sword" option with all the pomp and ceremony is the best course of action. For everyone.
I wouldn't be surprised if he genuinely resigns rather than it being a forced one. After an off season from hell, I don't think he's as enamoured with the job as he once was.

Why do you harp on about that 2018 Grand Final as if it is some kind of proof he can coach?

Why isn't last year's semi-final an equally valid measurement of his coaching ability? There have been a lot more matches similar to that in his resume.

And, ultimately, he is the only coach in the history of the competition to have a team five goals up at the 20 minute mark of the first quarter of a grand final and lose it.

He isn't going to get a single coaching offer and you know it.

Every other team's supporters would be utterly terrified at the thought of Buckley coaching their team next year and for a few years after.

All we can pray is that Carlton are stupid enough to think he can coach and sign him to a ten year contract.

It’s exactly why there is so much support for Buckley from oppo supporters, clubs and the Collingwood hating media.
They love us having no future.

This is my early shortlist. Doesn't neccessarily mean I endorse all of them but they will be mentioned I'm sure.

Coaches with senior AFL coaching experience
  • Alastair Clarkson
  • Don Pyke
  • Ross Lyon
  • Brad Scott
  • Michael Voss
  • Justin Leppitsch
Assistant coaches
  • Sam Mitchell
  • Adam Kingsley
  • Blake Caracella
  • Scott Burns
  • Adem Yze
Clarkson is unlikely, but it's worth asking the question.

I think Pyke and Kingsley are appealing prospects.
Kingsley especially as he is responsible for midfield and stoppages for Richmond.

yes I know - he’s the worst Coach in the AFL, as you asserted continually on the Melbourne board.

If he wants a job, he’ll get one.

How many Coaches that he’ll be competing against will have been Coach of the year or made Top4, PF’s and a GF.

Sadly you and others have an absurdly illogical bias against him.

He'll never coach again.

only if choses not to - it will not be due to lack of opportunity.

Try making the case he can’t Coach based on his record - especially compared to other likely candidates.
It’s not possible.

Any Club board would look favorably on his application and he ain’t falling an interview.

I sincerely hope you are right.
So he can coach another club down the S bend, like he's done to us.
Unfortunately, he'll never coach again.

How are Melbourne going now?

Who would take Buckley on as coach?

North? No.
Hawthorn? No. Their next coach is already there.
GWS? They keep beating us, so why would they want him?
Carlton? We can only hope they are that stupid.
Geelong? Never. they want more flair and excitement.
Suns? It might be his one and only chance, but given there is every likelihood they will finish above Collingwood this year, why would they?

Exactly. Every opposition supporter wants him signed on again. And again.

Any Club board would look favorably on his application and he ain’t falling an interview.

Every other club board would see what most Collingwood supporters don't - he is a spin merchant who could put Bruce McAvaney to sleep with his stats recital.
