Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

Thanks for the well expressed thoughts.

We actually want to encourage quality discussion not stifle it.

EDIT: Your point regarding the thread title is accurate.
I'm fine with this as long as we can still discuss how the Romans conquered Greece and destroyed the Phalanxes and debate the whole Macedonia/Greece issue.

In my view this debate deserves its own board, such is the importance.

It's well established that most things were proudly invented by the Greeks and then perfected and made fashionable by the Romans e.g. homosexuality.

you're a hard man and times probably require it but I'd give him a week or two to settle in.
Jamie is a senior player, they need to be marked harder.

Obviously buckley is instructing them not to do those hook leads that jamie was doing. I'm sure bucks will have a word with him.... And obviously, that assertive forward-looking plays that Jamie indulges in, are completely outside Buckley's plans.
Agree, Buckley would instruct the forward coach to teach players how to lead where the mids can't find you, and that one effort is plenty for a forward...then just all head to the same spot so no chance of any one on one contest.

Jamie clearly played outside the plan, we can't have that.

I heard that Buckley laid down the law to Jamie at 3/4 time, and Jamie thumbed his nose at him and got a massage. Bucks then put him in the midfield so that he couldnt score and Jamie went directly against orders by kicking that last quarter goal.
It wouldn't surprise me.

Buckley's gameplan demands our mids lose contested possession and don't win clean clearances, so once again Billy going away from the plan.

Now we all know from the experts in this thread that Buckley NEVER makes moves unless it's to go more defensive, so the move of Billy into the guts just shows you how bad their relationship has deteriorated.... I think Buck's is ready to do another Stevo and throw Billy out for a 4th round draft pick and a payment of half his salary.... I have a source within the club
Yep Billy definitely trade bait after that performance.

The plan is to kick sideways and keep doing it until we make a mistake....then the plan is to try to scramble and re-establish a defensive posture and then repeat the whole process. I think Jamie is a bit of a loner and likes to go outside the plan.... de goey is much the same.... we need to trade those boys before we start getting too offensive.

Not perfected yet because it's still be worked on apparently.

let’s be objective. We still struggled to generate inside 50’s, and without Elliot our forward 50 was quite poor. The ball rarely got there and when it did, it came out very easily. A win yes, there’s still a lot of issues

I agree, we're a long way off. The journey back to contention is going to be long so we celebrate every win; it doesn't mean we forget that there's heaps of improvement required.

We have some good kids and at least one more quality pick next year. The glass is 3/9 full. :) If we can't find and share any joy in it, what's the point?

I don't think there was a change this week, we just played a very attacking side, who probably should have won on opportunity, but gave us more gaps than usual to work with.

There will be some confidence from winning, but I saw nothing fundamentally exciting or breakthrough from the game plan/coaching.

Individual players did give me some excitement.

I didnt get excited about winning either. I'm more interested in the game plan than winning. If we can get a coach in who has the best game plan I'll be happy, and premierships will be just an added bonus.

I don't. He'd have a lot of clean air for the next few years and a club and fan base right behind him.
Are you talking about football supporters? Any new coach would be under the hammer from day 1 and lambasted like Buckley is at the first hint of a loss. As soon as the coach sacking starts, a club finds it very hard to get off that bus. New coaches get very little leeway from fans.

This doesn’t prove if he is a good coach or not if the crows kick straight when they were dominating this would have been a different narrative

You want it both ways - last week he was a bad Coach when clearly our kicking cost us the game against a flag favourite.
This week, no credit again, because Adel couldn’t kick straight.
That is just silly.

Elliott was sublime. Poulter and Bianco are clearly already best 22. Like Stepho they need to play every game. Cal was very good finally after coming on. But it’s still Groundhog Day. These days When Bucks speaks I find it’s not even of interest what he has to say, never mind inspiring or even enlightening. I’m reminded of a boss I once had and nobody valued what he had to say. We listened politely but we knew he was just sadly irrelevant.

Buckleys message only needs to resonate with his players.
That you are underwhelmed has no bearing on team performance, so I’m not sure why it’s a concern to you.

isnt that how it should be? I think it keeps the coach primed to succeed. I wouldnt hesitate to sink the boots into a new coach if he didnt turn it around in maybe 3 or 4 weeks. How long does it take to come up with an attractive attacking plan and tell the players how to do it? And the players would be ready for a change too, after being told to kick backwards for the last 10 years...

No it isn't. 3 or 4 weeks? Give me strength.

Mark's dry humour is an acquired taste.

I think everyone acknowledges that we have a top 4 list... at least... all we need is the right coach with the right plan. If we have the right plan, we would transform overnight. I can something like what Rhyce Shaw did at North happening if we get Bucks out the door. All we need is that plan...

Very optimistic! With our forward line & current midfield, our list ain’t top 4 quality even if Clarko was coaching us.

Correct. The players are Buckley’s most important audience, not me. It concerns me because I have no confidence in him being the way forward.

I always think the fans are the most important audience. We're the ones who are going to make sure he loses his job... the players wont have a say in it
