The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

Maybe try and get preferably a Clarko if not maybe Scott to come in but also get a newbie as well like Yze, Mitchell, Kinglsey in as senior assistant. The experienced head cops the heat for a few years, sets up the list and then the newb takes over.

When I was watching the Teague presser, I was thinking about those people who were talking about getting a young coach. I thought about rhyce shaw too, and it looks like teague is at "shaw stage 2" at the moment. If we replace buckley, you gotta hope its with someone who has done it before like clarkson, or lyon, or williams. You would think that mitchell would stand the strain, but I think we'll be able to dice him into small pieces after 18 months, especially if the in-fighting at board level smoulders along. A "brendan bolton" type choice might find the club in a rabbit hole by next year...
Malthouse and Matthews are the only two coaches in the last 35 years that I can think of who have won a Premiership at their second club.

Premiership coaches at two or more clubs:
  • Jack Worrall = (1906, 1907, 1908 at Carlton) and (1911, 1912 at Essendon)
  • Frank Hughes = (1932 at Richmond) and (1939, 1940, 1941, 1948 at Melbourne)
  • Percy Bentley = (1934 at Richmond) and (1945, 1947 at Carlton)
  • Ron Barassi = (1968, 1970 at Carlton) and (1975, 1977 at North Melbourne)
  • David Parkin = (1978 at Hawthorn) and (1981, 1982, 1995 at Carlton)
  • Allan Jeans = (1966 at St Kilda) and (1983, 1986, 1989 at Hawthorn)
  • Leigh Matthews = (1990 at Collingwood) and (2001, 2002, 2003 at Brisbane)
  • Mick Malthouse = (1992, 1994 at West Coast) and (2010 at Collingwood)

Actually Teague is just another example of how Newbie Coaches get put under pressure much earlier than experienced seasoned Coaches.
Without the score on the board Newbies are an easy targets.

the problem with new coaches is that they show too much vulnerability - especially to the media. A lot of people might think that will result in the media and the fans going easy on the coach, but the opposite happens... everyone goes in for the kill.

It's happening now with Teague... he was agreeing with the media at the press conference. They interpret that as weakness.

The best exponent of keeping the wolves off was malthouse. He was good in melb but even better in perth. He used to scare the shit off the perth journalists who didnt have the balls to question him when the eagles were losing. Buckley does a pretty good job with walking the line. You'll notice that he's very businesslike with mark robinson these days but with other journalists he'll be more casual.

Mitchell might be able to do it but his support among the pie fans is pretty thin. We will all want to see him succeed - just as much as we want buckley ot succeed - but if things look like they're going to take a while to get better, he'll be pretty much on his own.

Caracella and all those other low profile assistants would have no hope, I think.

I just thought of the situation with the Truck.... he was looking a bit shaky for while there. The media was circling looking for a kill. He's off the hook now. And essendon gave him a year to settle in by using Worsfold as the PR man. I didnt see any of his press conferences. He didnt cop it for a full year either. The new Pie coach will have to take the crap for quite some time.

Thats a good point...but how many coaches change club after winning a premiership?

No coach over 60 has coached a grand final team...but what does that really say?

So we need a 2 club coach to win flags? If we only knew this in 2011

I watched 360 last night. Buckley will be given another contract. When they spoke about all of the players hugging him after the win, that is a huge tick to any incumbent coach. I think that was one of the reasons he remained after the review in 2017. Pendles in particular and most of the players wanted him to be their coach.

They never did their due diligence on Teague.. simple as that.
