Society/Culture Is Comedy Dead?

And there is the problem, which is what we see repeatedly with far right nutjobs who love a laugh at any minority they can find, but draw the line at comedy aimed at them, which most is because their views are so out of line with normal people, it's funny.

I laugh at most things, I'd I think I'm not going to laugh, I change channels in the worst case scenario.
Said unironically as if the lefty mafia dont do the exact same thing 😂

As for comedy being dead. It isnt. More comedians have platforms than ever. There's more streaming services than ever, more "specials" than ever, more shows. Its not dead. Just stop listening to clickbait media claiming xyz is "cancelled"...

It doesn't need to be said ironically. Far right conservatives complain far more about funny shit than their left counterparts

And what they complain about is different too. Make a joke about a minority the left get upset. Make a joke about Donald Trump, the right get upset...I see a difference.

But the only cancelled comedian I saw was Cathy Griffin 🤣

I dont think anyone gets upset at Trump jokes though. That was low hanging fruit for any comedian and they all cashed in accordingly. No one got upset about it that i can see

What?! The dweebs on HIBPA? Who's a good comedian we've produced the last 5 years?
Do you go to any comedy rooms throughout the year? Or any shows at MICF? We've got such a strong scene right now. And yes many of the guests on HYBPA are tremendous, most notably the young/newer talents that are brought in.

I was being light hearted. (But Trump supporters did get upset because they don't mock other figures quite as hard)

I've tried to find a list of so called cancelled comedians and to be honest for the ones i found I couldn't really determine if it was left or right just people deciding to be offended on a particular topic.

The majority of people banging on about comedy being dead probably don't attend comedy or even watch the specials available on streamers. They probably hate watch The Project and think that's the standard of comedy in this country.

You ask them to name five comedians and they will be some combo of Carl Barron, Dave Hughes and Jimeoin or something

Should they be allowed to yell fire in a crowded room?

Blanket statements like that rarely make sense. What's more, comedians can generally say what they want but venues aren't obliged to give them a platform, particularly if they don't find what they say funny. The purpose of a comedian is to entertain the audience, if you're not doing that, then maybe the issue is with the material and not the audience.

I stand by my comment.

Censorship rarely has the desired result. All it does is sends things underground.

Within reason, I mean Michael Richards.

Yeah nobody should be off limits, that's the whole point.

Yes, within the parameters of commonly accepted hate speech I agree. But that is as far I am happy with.

They censored Jerry Sadowitz for getting his dick out and took him completely out of context. Some woke idiots complained and they cancelled him. Virtue signallers who didn’t understand his content. F***ers.

Lenny Bruce and George Carlin were banned back in the day. Literally two of the gods of the craft. Because the feckless puritans didn’t like what was being said.

.

Your argument would be stronger if it didn’t rely on these hack terms.

Getting your dick doesn’t sound very funny.

You have zero idea who I am talking about and less of a clue as to what happened. Educate yourself. I suggest you start here:

Enjoy your next Jimeoin gig BTW, he might even trot out his lame "flip flops" routine for the intellectually simple.:thumbsu:

Yeah I haven't seen outrage about Trump jokes, or Scomo jokes for that matter (and there's been plenty of each)
Trump and Boris Johnson both cleverly made their public image somewhat comedic by design, so mockery did not really hurt them since a lot of the time they were in on the joke (i.e. BoJos hair, Trump's over the top bragging).

So you acknowledge breaking laws around hate speech shouldn’t be accepted but whipping your dick out in public is also against the law. More importantly, I can’t see it being funny, just an attempt to be shocking. Venue is within their rights to say jog on until you get some better material.

Bravo! Are you joining the dark side?

I don't think that Dave is the one that's obsessed and has a grudge.
He absolutely-****ing-lutely is. Dedicated half of his latest special to attacking them and ended it by accusing trans people of punching down on him. It was borderline delusional. I remember the joke that kickstarted this little storm, it was fairly innocuous and if he had just ignored the criticisms, the whole controversy would have died in the arse. Instead, he’s spent ever increasing time in his specials to fighting back at every little criticism. He’s incredibly thin-skinned. He still makes occasional good points, i.e how trans rights seem to be more easily won than black rights because they were led by a rich white man. But it seems churlish to be angry that one disadvantaged group has had to fight less hard than another for recognition.

Oh, the ignorance.

Sadowitz is regarded as one of the greatest standups alive. Furthermore the venue and the paying punters know EXACTLY what sort of comic he is. It’s not a secret and he’s been putting on shows at that venue for years.

He gets cancelled for getting his dick out (whether you find it funny of not, out of context from your high horse is a moot point) yet Puppetry of the Penis is ok? Or should they shut that down too so delicate flowers like you can sleep at night? People have been getting their kits off on stage for decades in case you weren’t aware. Not seen a burlesque show cancelled yet. Sadowitz broke precisely zero laws and nobody hss suggested otherwise. Until now, from Bigfooty’s cheapest seat. Hilarious.😂

You know what mate, you have the option not to watch.

Sadowitz didn't get cancelled, he was already a niche comedian beforehand and now there are just less venues willing to take him on. Whether you regard him as one of the greatest, very few stay great forever and the reality is that time may have just passed him by (see John Cleese banging on about how no one will let him be on TV any more when he's in his 80s and hasn't produced anything of note in decades). Getting your dick out isn't really a joke, it's certainly not what one would expect from a comedy show rather than, say, a burlesque show, and the context would have to be pretty ****ing amazing to have all but the lowest of brows giggling at it. And if audiences say, you know what, we've seen this before, it's not shocking any more, it's not funny, then innovate or die.

You know what mate, you have the option not to watch.
Of course I do, but I've always liked Chappelle, he's one of the greats. It's been a little sad seeing him get bogged down by this grudge and get less funny as a result, but he's still quite sharp when his focus is directed elsewhere. I chose not to watch his speech ranting about how he had been cancelled (ironically aired on the world's largest streamer) because it seemed like it was going to be the same sad navel gazing, but I'll always give him a shot in a comedy format. Let's hope he sticks to his word not to do any more material on trans people.

Meanwhile I will watch as many voices as possible, comedy is one of my favourite forms of entertainment, I watch it weekly and have probably seen more than most. I'm not leading the charge to get people cancelled but I'm not buying arguments from some when comedians pass their use-by date,

I haven't watch Chappelle for a while, so I can't offer opinion on whether or not he's ranting.

I could probably put up another example of comedian turned ranter and that's Hannah Gadsby. She used to be quite funny, now it's like she doesn't even attempt comedy - she just uses the platform to get her angered agenda across. She's definitely using misandrists tones from the little I've seen of her since what it seems her deliberate leap from comedian to pi**ed off person.

She's mentioned on every page in this thread, you don't need to put anything up.

You actually have no idea what you are talking about. Sadowitz got cancelled by ignorant virtue signallers who have no idea how his shows are put together. And if you haven't seen him (and I know by your comments that you haven't) the you are really so far out of your depth in this discussion as to be an irrelevance. It's a massive story in comedy circles and almost everybody is on his side. Not one comedian has spoken up in defence of the decision.

And it is not my opinion that he is an all time great standup. He is an all time great standup. If you knew anything about comedy at all, you'd know that. Some of the greatest modern day comics literally moulded themselves on his act (Gervais, Boyle, etc) and great comedians everywhere hold the guy up as an icon.

But you haven't seen him so you wouldn't know. You just read the trigger words on line and formed an ignorant opinion.
