Some of the harshest, most un-PC comics are still doing well for themselves. Frankie Boyle is hilarious and his stature just seems to keep growing, Jimmy Carr another. Bill Burr is huge.
I am sure it was Frankie Boyle who said he didn’t take it personally if people were offended by his material, while other comics were enraged when people hung shit on them.

He seems to view it as just a part of the job.

Not sure how you measure it but comedy would appear to be much more popular than ever, with Youtube and podcasts along with live shows, so many avenues. Also there's probably a silent majority who appreciates "anti-woke" comedy and a huge market for it I'd reckon, right wing comedy is the new shock comedy.

Anti-woke is definitely the mainstream now, which is great for comedy since there is so much material available for comedians and satirists to sink their teeth into.

Does anyone even watch 'leftist comedy' and is there is even such a thing now? SNL is still flogging that dead horse, but does anyone even watch that anymore?

Yeah I thought that comedians should really have a thick skin when it comes to criticism for sure. That's why I was surprised to hear Hanna Gadsby say she can't handle criticism, even when it was from another female lesbian, and with her worship of identity politics I figured that would be ok. I wonder how she'd deal with critique from a white straight male?

A lot of comedians, plenty with no with no political agenda, pursue comedy for some kind of social acceptance. The number of comedians that mine personal struggles for laughs is huge. It’s not surprising that some still struggle with the criticism, even if it’s part of the job (particularly if the criticism is as much about them as a person as it is about the joke).

Some comedians aim to provoke. If your thing is to mock Christians and you get criticism from Christians that's to be expected. Personally if I was a Christian (ha) I probably wouldn't watch such a comedian but each to their own.

The sort of criticism that would be annoying is what Ricky Gervais touches on when he talks about the aftermath of his Caitlyn Jenner joke at the Golden Globes (Oscars?). Like he said, if you make a joke about Bill Cosby it isn't automatically racist because he is black. People getting offended because he made reference to the fact that Bruce Jenner was in fact a man for a good 50-60 years need to lighten up.

I watched leftist comedy once, but was afraid to laugh because the comedian suffered from autism...and online abuse....and discrimination....and at her first stand up show some arseh*le called her a fatty.

She became a stand up comedian to piss male comics off.

Her father wanted a son, and her mother never reached her career goals because of white male privilege and patriarchy dominance.

The kids at school picked on her.

We kept waiting for the punchline, but it never came :(

What is leftist comedy?

Any comedian or Australian comedy that’s come out of the ABC

And these people are now infiltrating streaming services. (Hannah Gatsby, Matt Okine, Tom Ballard)

I would class this as ‘leftist’ comedy....Okine, Adam ‘all white people are dog campaigners’ Briggs...and apparently the delightful Clementine Ford stars in this this season, so it should be a real hoot. Although I don’t mind Harriet Dyer, who plays the hilarious, promiscuous, alcoholic, comic relief.

Dunno why it has to be a right-wing, left-wing thing or whatever at all (Perhaps it's really just becoming that type of debate because it's the far-left projecting their 'politics' into it). Hannah just doesn't even have any jokes, no punchline or anything like it, just seemed like social commentry rants with a comedic delivery. But, these are the types that will blame everyone else for not laughing rather than actually write good jokes. If she wants to revolve her schtick around hating men, then go for it. I'll check them out if they're funny, but at the moment, they're not even jokes, she's not even remotely amusing and I have no clue how she got on Netflix.

Yup, I like those two as well as Lee Evans older stuff, some Kevin Bridges and Frankie Boyle. Jim Jeffries skit on guns in America was hilarious. Was thinking of seeing him live when he was in Glasgow a few weeks ago, but £50+ for a ticket....

Ah, was wondering why YT was turning up nothing on his comedy.

I can't get into him, but I loved that bit he done on Schwarzenegger. lol.
Not only does Gadsby have punchlines, she spends part of her show deconstructing how the jokes work. You don’t have to like her but it’s simply not true to say there are no jokes in her set.

Utopia has been the only comedy worth watching produced in this country since I don't know when.

It takes a stab at everything including political correctness.

I get the feeling "left wing" comedy is anything that might slightly offend or which does not completely fall within the beliefs of right wingers.
The real irony is that most of the "right wing" comedy they love so much is lampooning them and satirising their idiocy.

She definitely has jokes in the traditional comedy sense, I didn’t find too many funny but you can tell when she’s trying to be, and yes she does explain how she does it. Kind of strange thing to do, like a magician explaining how they pulled a cat out of the hat.

The special was weird though, went from stand up to angry and sad rants about her life, I didn’t exactly know what i was watching to be honest.

Is anything vulgar or offensive or non-PC by extension "right wing" or "rightist" comedy?

Nanette is an unusual beast, which is why it's got so much attention. But it's also only one of her many shows, so people judging her as if it is the sole example of her work are missing a beat. It was supposed to be her final work, an explanation of who she is and why, and yes, a bit of social commentary because she used comedy for so long to try to fit in and hide her trauma. Its success has changed things and she's continuing; she's already said her new show will be far less dramatic.

Don’t pretend Nanette was some kind of exception to the rule.

The clearest insight into Gadsby’s miserable, inherently misandrist, world view more like.

Along with this little effort.

You really don't like her do you?

What did she do to you... ?

You really don't like her do you?

What did she do to you... ?

The issue is what I didn’t do to her, or any other women.

I never ‘picked her out of any pack’ and assaulted her.

I never sexually assaulted, or harassed any women.

I like to think that I behave myself at all times, with accordant respect to all people in the community....irrespective of race, religion, gender or sexuality.

So why do I have to continually be harangued, by angry feminists and lesbians and told that I am part of something inherently ‘toxic’ for simply being born male?

And without going into unessecary details, I have actually had a very hard life, by most people’s measure. From the outset, and through no fault, or choosing of action of my own. So why should I have to continually sit and be harangued and told to ‘check my white male privilege’ etc etc?

#notallmen, hey?

Frankie Boyle is a poor man’s Sadowitz but very funny nonetheless.

Look Sadowitz up mate, he was the guy who outed Jimmy Savile and it cost him 20 years of his career. Disillusioned, he went “underground” and actively removes any of his material from the internet so you won’t find anything recorded. But his interviews and backstory are fascinating reading.

He’s the best comic I have ever seen live...and that includes the likes of Robin Williams, Seinfeld, Jimmy Carr, Chris Rock, Jeffries and quite a few other greats. And he’s the best I have seen by a very long way. Plus he is one of the greatest close up magicians alive and he works card tricks into his awfully obscene but frightfully funny act.

In my mate's words after he saw Sadowitz recently - "He was brutal and made me laugh about things that I really should not have laughed about!".

I went looking for his work on Youtube and found nothing so I thought he had been cancelled, but your explanation makes sense.

They kicked him out of the Edinburgh Fringe this year because he got his dick out and used naughty words. Allegedly he offended some of the young, woke staff at the event. The venue manager’s statement on his cancellation was about as pathetic as it gets.
