Is Nick Daicos The Best First Year Player Of All Time?

Carey is clearly off his chops. Rowell underage year was superb but in particular his grand final game where he played one of the best games I’ve seen from a draftee.

It was matt rendell.

Said Daicos held his own despite being 2 years their younger Rowell and Anderson. Claimed him as best junior player he'd seen at the time. Posted the interview with Dwayne Russell above.

Ridiculous Daicos is great but he wasn’t close to them during their draft years. Which makes ****ing sense..

Not an urban myth, It was the opinion of Matt Rendell.

Matt Rendell has identified a Collingwood father/son prospect as one of the very best junior players he has laid eyes on.

The Magpies’ assistant recruiting manager says Nick Daicos, the son of club legend Peter and brother of current Pie Josh, will potentially go at pick 1 in the 2021 draft and is a player the black and white faithful can certainly get excited about.

Rendell says Daicos Jnr ran around with Gold Coast Suns pair Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson in school footy and wasn’t too far off the elite juniors despite being a couple of years below the pair who went pick 1 and 2 respectively in 2019.

“Nick Daicos is father/son for Collingwood next year,” Rendell told Dwayne Russell on SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“He’s as good a junior as I’ve seen play the game.”

Russell replied: “Hang on, so the younger son of the great Daicos is the best player you’ve seen come through?”

To which Rendell said: “He’s right up there.

“He played with Rowell and Anderson for Carey at school and more than held his own and that’s two years younger than them.

“He is a really good player. He is taller though, he can mark the ball and tends to play more midfield. He’s taller than his brother Josh.

“I would say right here, right now that he goes number one but it is a cracking top 10 next year in the 2021 (draft).

“I’d say number one but if he’s not in the top three I’ll give the game away. That’s something for the Collingwood people to look forward to.

“Look, Collingwood aren’t going to get away for having to pay a price for him. Someone will bid in the top five surely. They know that. You can’t hide him anywhere, he’s too good a player.”

'Every bit as good if not better', which is what the original poster stated, is a little different to 'more than held his own' and 'wasn't too far off the elite juniors'.

Did you hear the one about Travis Cloke visiting Nick Daicos' Auskick clinic when he was at the peak of his powers in 2010?

Daicos was 6 years old and did some contested marking against Cloke. Daicos monstered him.

Yes they have taken one of the best juniors he's seen and combined it with more then held his own with those 2 despite being two years younger.

Regardless the sentiment and point was similar. Which would be that he held his own when judged against the best 2 players of u18 senior year when he was 16.

I watch APS and it is not unusual to look at a Year 10 and say/think 'He's going well and certainly doesn't look out of place'.

But that is very different to saying 'that Year 10 is every bit as good if not better than the kids who are touted as the top 2 draft picks', which is what the original poster stated.

So no, the sentiment is not the same.

Conor Stone was asked what it was like playing against Rowell and Anderson when they were in Year 12 and Stone was in Year 11. He responded that they had two kids tagging Rowell and he still got 40 possessions.

Wtf are you talking about?
Although Walsh won a lot of the ball in his first year, he's disposal effiency and decision making wasn't great, took till his 3rd in the comp to be clearly in front of the rest of the draft and it's a fair draft. Daicos is in front of Walsh as he's kicking is elite and so's he's decision making, only Judd and Selwood rival daicos' first year in the modern era as a midfield/flanker, plenty of guys the ball in their first year but don't use it well

What? Walsh’s decision making is one of his great strengths, his ability to make the best decision with and without the ball. How quickly and how he read the game. Although yes his kicking wasn’t what it is now.

For a bloke who was pumped up by some in the media as the "best first year player of all time", it's somewhat of a surprise to see that Nick Daicos could only finish 7th in Collingwood's B&F award (behind Howe, Sidebottom and Lipinski). It wasn't like he missed games which is normally an excuse for players finishing down the list in their club's best and fairest. Daicos played every game!

Care to share your thoughts on why he didn't poll better???

From memory, Cyril Rioli finished 6th in Hawthorn's 2008 B&F... The '08 Hawks were a better team than Collingwood. Finished 2nd on the ladder with 17 wins and beat the unbeatable Cats in the Grand Final.

We've seen other 1st year players finish in the top 3 or 4 of their club's B&F

Nick Daicos is obviously gonna be a star. But the pro-Magpies hype and pro-Daicos hype was laid on pretty thick this year by the media.

Then why are you still reading the main board and posting on here? :D

Anyway, the Copeland Trophy was last night. I thought I'd share. There was so much media hype this year.
I just thought it was interesting the Collingwood coaches had Daicos as their 7th best player.

He was 11 votes off finishing 3rd. 7th in a prelim year is an excellent result.

Not sure what your hissy fit is over?

The 'thread title' is what brings on these controversies, rather than Is Nick Daicos One Of The Best First Year Player's Of All Time?, it states Is Nick Daicos The Best First Year Player's Of All Time? If thread was titled the former 'One of', then this thread along with many other 'best of' threads on Big Footy would be far more civil. Anyone that doesn't think Nick is 'one of' the best first year players of all time, then they are either delusional or know SFA about footy, his two 'almost blind' short kicks under extreme pressure to another Collingwood team mate in the last quarter in the most recent final games against the Cats which resulted in Magpie goals was as good as it gets, his awareness of what's around him in traffic is sublime, the kid's got eyes in the back of his head.... bottom line, the kid's a star.

I must have missed where the B&F of a single year was the infallible, be-all end-all. Lipinski finished higher than Maynard and De Goey - wonder if your logic applies to that comparison.

It also hurt Daicos’ B&F chances that he played in a very competitive team.
