Is Nick Daicos The Best First Year Player Of All Time?

And that was because full backs were often slow, stocky plodders.

Gun local footballers still kick big bags on muddy grounds these days - it’s not a whole lot different from the best VFL forwards dominating as the deepest target.
No they weren't

Nicks speed is a bit underrated he is quicker then Pendles and your average paced mids but not lightning like some other either.

Also not sure if your aware he carried an ankle injury from round 2 that requires surgery in off season to repair. Hardly running at your best with a injury to teh ankle.

I never mentioned anything about Nick's lack of speed.

I was talking about his father. He was quick but you never considered him to be an 'explosive' athlete. Injuries early on his career impacted his progress just when he was beginning to dominate. But I see the same footy IQ, exquisite skills and deceptive strength in his sons. Nick reminds me of Selwood when he first entered the game. Already directing players on where to go on the field etc.

Peter Daicos was never quick. He had a quick brain and able to execute his skills very quickly.

A great first season, and he'll probably go on to have an excellent career, but he's not the Leigh Matthews, Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett rolled into one character that many Collingwood fans seem to think.
I'd be curious which Pies fan said this. I've seen the comps to Ablett, which IMO are off, but mainly because he doesn't have near Abletts speed. But his impact could absolutely end up in the same ballpark as he puts on bulk (almost definitely won't end up with Abletts strength and power, but Ablett started as a skinny kid who physically developed significantly over his career). He showed great goal scoring ability from midfield in juniors and when he played midfield in the AFL, could def see him as a 30 touches per game mid on high disposal efficiency who could also kick 30+ goals a year which would be Ablett like statistically.

He’s overrated because of his name. Walsh is better imo.

Daicos will be the better of the two. Walsh is a jet but he never hurts you on the scoreboard. Daicos played most of the year across half back and still kicked more goals and setup more goals than what Walsh did as a full time mid.
Daicos could be elite in a number of different positions. The kid's as special as anything we seen for a very long time. No contest when it comes to decision making as well. The best first year player since Judd.

We’ll see I guess, HB’s tend to get the easy possessions. Both guns though.

“Easy possessions” is not only a completely meaningless thing to say, but has nothing to do with the damage done by said possessions

Dan Rioli moved from forward pocket to HB. His disposal numbers and intercepts have doubled. It’s the nature of the position and those possessions are one of the least impactful in the game. Defenders chip it back and forth between them all the time. So yes easy possessions.

I haven’t read every page so not sure it’s been mentioned. But all time. I wasn’t there to see see him. But John Coleman kicked 100 goals as a 20yo in year 1. Hard to top that. Ever.

Don’t think he would kick half that in todays game tbh.

Who would have thought a flanker would be closer to the football than a pocket :0

Ok, he won’t win a Brownlow at an earlier age than Cotchin did being 22. Guaranteed. He’s running out of time. Better start living up to his name soon. Walsh won’t have that problem imo.

If that's the criteria you want to go to, then that's fine (albeit weird). Cotchin is a curious comparison though. Daicos had nearly 2 times as many votes in his first season as Cotchin did in his first 3 seasons.

Walsh won't have that problem because he is already 22 and hasn't won a Brownlow...

People keep bagging Cotchin, so if Daicos doesn’t get one it’s embarrassing. He’s a Daicos after all right. This thread is about him being a great young player, it’s not weird criteria he has to actually win something right?

Fair enough, thought Walsh was younger. He’ll still get a browlow for sure.

Win something and win something by age 22 are not the same. Not very complicated

Cotchin may be a bar too high. Individual awards aside, what Cotchin achieved puts him in the top tier of RFC captains and success stories. Actually, are there any better? I'm thinkin Tommy, and Blood, those legend types, Cotchin is IN the conversation, at least.

These types of club stalwarts who initiated and drove success are much more rare than excellent players.

Plus the redemption story. The shellakings, the toxic comments, the mocking, the derision ... and then, the 3 flags.

Allelluia Trent!

All this talk about Daicos being "generational" is quite funny as Judd, O'Meara, Walsh and Greene are at least in the ballpark. Suggesting that we'd only have to wait 4-5 years on average to get another first year player as good as Daicos was this year.

Just reading up on Scott Pendlebury, who is easily my favourite Collingwood player of all time. Got glandular fever in his first year and missed the first ten rounds (2006) and fell seven votes short of Joel Selwood for the Rising Star in Selwood's first year (2007).

The first year glandular fever throws out all comparisons to Nick Daicos but if Daics has a subsequent career that even approaches that of Scott Pendlebury Collingwood has a real player on their hands.
