Is North Melbourne passing on Logan McDonald going to be the 2021 version of the Bulldogs passing on Buddy for Ryan Griffin

I was right!

People can keep giving North crap about picking Will Phillips over Logan McDonald but for me. I have never thought McDonald was a great player, If North had their time again they would pick neither of these players.
KPPs can be hard to rate after four seasons. Josh Kennedy took six seasons to really break out.

At least McDonald is definitely AFL standard. Phillips is barely getting a game in one of the worst team's in league history.

Not much to love. Holmes (20) looks clearly the best of the non-academy players.

Think Thilthorpe is in for a massive 2025 if he can stay injury free. Looks imposing.

Still relatively early so players could still breakout from here but looking a very weak draft
A lot of Lions fans were annoyed that we traded two first round picks in that draft (#21 & #22) for Melbourne's first pick the next year, which ended up becoming #20 as they went from 9th to winning the flag that season. But it ended up being trading Bailey Laurie and Jake Bowey for Kai Lohmann. In hindsight I'm extremely happy the Lions did what they did. This draft was poison due to Covid screwing up everyone's development.

I know Phillips is clearly a dud, Logan is better but people shouldn't be raving about McDonald when saying North stuffed up is my point. lol

That's fair. I definitely don't think he's a generational key forward, but think he'll be solid for a long time and potentially make AA at some point in his career.

The covid aspect made it more guesswork, but it was just a shit year. The following years should have been more impacted by lack of development as Vic kids lost 2 years of it, rather than 1 year for the 2020 crop.

They still had a NAB League season in 2021 though. They didn't in 2020.
I thought it was only about 5 games? But that 2021 crop lost all of 2020 too and a fair chunk of 2021. Same with the year that followed.

The final year of under 18s is the most important for draft order, but I find it hard to believe that it's so much more important for overall development of a footballer, or that it can't be recovered in subsequent years within the AFL system.

No, the Vic teams played anywhere between 9-11 games each. Tasmania played 8.

I'm sure it's a bit of both. Less talent, exacerbated by the disruption to the top age year.

Mcdonald is building quite nicely in terms of stats. Played every game this year for 37 goals.

Its a pretty solid return.

The 2020 draft is just an absolute mess. Phillips hasn't performed anywhere near expectations, DGB at pick 6 already out of the system, The Essendon players at pick 8,9,10 have all stagnated enormously (or have barely got going). GWS with two misses in the teens as well, and Collingwood with two misses inside 20 as well.

To me, he screams flight risk as well.

West Coast could go massive for him and Warner together.

McDonald signed a contract with the Swans up to the end of the '28 season.

McDonald's trajectory is currently that of a later first round selection opposed to a no.4 selection.

He's now played 70 games. Barely an aerial threat and is not the best of kicks either.
Certainly a very agile and an athletic footballer but I doubt North Melbourne would be fretting today having not selected him.

West Coast would blow their entire rebuild trading for McDonald. They have Allen, Waterman, the progressing Williams and the untried Shanahan and Reid.

Waterman is a third, and Shanahan can play back to replace gov in time.

I do see your point though, i think West Coast are building quite well, and Warner will add to that nicely.

Waterman might not have the height of the modern KPF but his contested marking ability is of the highest standard across the comp. He’s a key forward now.

Sure but he's done better than Phillips. That was just a terrible draft that a few clubs struck the Hail Mary jackpot. Logan is doing fine if he improves the 37 goals to lets say 46-55 this year, he's been steadily improving. He's only really had two full seasons playing. He's not going to be a roughead or a Buddy but that's fine, a solid key tall that roams up and down is what he is and that's fine.

With the still list hole of senior body to back up Larkey, the fact that Phillips still hasnt come on and the drafting since then, shows that it was a clear mistake. McDonald would have been a better option than Phillips.

Its clearly not the worst draft blunder of all time but still a mistake that was obvious at the time and still proves to be wrong (no matter how much of a crap shoot that draft year was).
