Swooped by Magpies??

It is that time of season again and i have got them at the end of my street, plus i have the biggest fear of them that its not funny. Everytime i get onto the road out the front of my house, they are coming at straight away?

Is there anything you can do to prevent getting swooped??????

I have no idea why people are afraid of these little things .. I have a couple of friends that are petrified of them and hide whenever they see a magpie .. FFS they're piddly little w***ers.

My uncle was on his balcony one morning and a magpies got him in the neck... And you wonder why people are scare of them..

Do they swoop you even when you are walking?? I've only gotten swooped wearing a helmet.

If you have ever been swooped by a magpie, youd know its pretty bad, they get pretty close and it is scary.

I remember they're used to be a bunch of them outside my house, and when I was in school, it used to be hell around september/october. I dunno how to prevent it, ive heard you can stare at them and they dont do anything, but im not sure.

* Avoid the area where you know magpies are swooping
* Try to watch the magpie while moving away quickly from the area. Magpies are less likely to swoop if you look at them
* You can draw or sew a pair of eyes on the back of a hat and wear it when walking
* Wear a bicycle helmet or you can make your own hat out of an ice cream container or card board to help protect your head
* Carry an open umbrella over your head
* Carry a stick or small branch above your head, but do not swing it at the magpie as you will provoke further attacks
* If you are riding a bicycle when the magpie swoops, get off the bicycle and wheel it quickly through the area. Your bicycle helmet will protect your head and you can attach a tall red safety flag to your bicycle or hold a stick or branch as a deterrent
* Wear your sunglasses on top of your head
* Walk in pairs or with a group of people

The above post is useful. Growing up in the country I dealt with this problem a lot.

They won't swoop if they can see your face/eyes.

They also don't like you waving big sticks around in the air as you walk, but I guess that was less of an issue for me walking around paddocks and not the ideal solution for someone in the city :D

Yeh I got swooped for the first time this year yesterday. I say it's nothing that a rifle and a good aim can't fix.:D

Is it true that bright colour attract the more? Say your riding a bike and the sun is reflecting off it, does that attract them more??

I know my brother use to get swooped when riding to school ages ago, mum put the fake eyes on the back of the helmet and it worked I think. Looks pretty stupid but hey if it works.
Im thinking about getting an umbrealla and drawing two big eyes on a peice of A4 paper and sticking it to the umbrella. Hopefully it will work.

You can always call the ranger in to collect the magpie that is swooping you. Just contact the local dog and wildlife catcher in your town.

When I live on a farm And had to walk home from the bus stop after school, there was always Shitloads of maggies in the trees at this time of year.

****ing scary as a little kid, Use to grab the biggest ****ing stick and run flat out with it swinging above my head Lol.

Haha. Today my mate was out the front on my house on a bike at about 4pm trying to get the magpies to swoop him but they wouldn't for some reason...

In the meantime i was crapping myself haha
