The commentators were going on the other day about luko putting on a kicking clinic, when I went and looked at his stats he’d only had 3 possessions (all kicks)
Commentators are only interested in talking up their own views so they look knowledgeable.

Confirmation bias at its best.

You’re talking 2 year deal, at $500k?

Wonder how happy he’ll be or happy his teammates will be seeing him get that much
Yes I wonder
It's overpaying for current performance - sure.
You're effectively paying for age 22 and age 23 years if giving a 2 year contract.
I reckon that value would be reasonable for what I think he can produce in 2023-2024.

Rankine’s difficulty is that he’s coming off a contract extension on big bucks signed soon after he was drafted

For whatever reason things haven’t gone swimmingly since then, so it’s easy to imagine the only question is how much of a cut is fair?

That’s never going to be an easy conversation especially if he thinks there’s more money to be had elsewhere. And is there?
Almost certainly

As much as I loved these 2 as prospects, I think this thread is a little outdated given how crowded the 2 parts of the field they play vs the make-up of our current list.

Small/Medium forward: Rachele, Rowe, McHenry, Murphy, McAdam, Newchurch + all the young midfielders running through
HBF/Wing: Sholl, Dawson, Cook, Hinge, Smith, Worrell, Hammill, McPherson, Doedee, Brown, Jones, Milera, Seedsman, Borlase, Parnell, Davis.

I mean, realistically could you pick 2 more crowded parts of our list? And TBH, I don't even know where those 2 would rank in those positions right now.

Ironically at this point I feel like its more likely that they want to come here, but we don't want them!

I think Rankine fits more of a gap. he and Rachele COULD make for a great offensive duo.

Luko probably still amounts to more - but I feel we have that covered unless he become a true KPP. Flankers are never that hard to find.

I genuinely was holding out hope of seeing that combo one day. But at this point to facilitate it the GC would have to essentially offer a list spot freeing trade scenario to us (essentially nothing), and Izak would need to agree to a sizeable paycut. Otherwise in most's eyes we are paying overs to further logjam a position of depth with an underperforming talent.

So yeah, even though he was one of my hardest draft crushes in 2018, i've made my peace with never seeing Rankine in the Tri-stripe.

So much for once-in-a-generation players in the draft of the century. ;)

Given Rozee has seemed to lose it the vaunted Lukosious, Rozee, Rankine, Haetley crew hasn't lived up to expectations.

Hell, can mount an argument that Tom Sparrow and Darcy Fort are the most effective players drafted from SA that year (or in fact Callum Wilkie from the rookie draft)

McClennan, Valente, Tarca, Jarvis, Kennerly were all flops too.

Can we close this thread?
Don't want either
I'd definitely still take the risk with Rankine and he'd have to come way cheaper than Lukosius currently. Of course only at the right price both draft collateral and salary wise.

It's a bit of a worrying trend of the best south australians not living up to expectations.

Really since Pavlich there's been a lot of Gibbs level blokes who come along as world beaters when being drafted to get to good, not great, over the course of their AFL careers.

If you look at top 5 picks from SA since Gibbs you get Hartlett, Trengove, Day, Polec, Toumpas, Lukoscious, Rankine and Rozee being the picks from 2008 to 2018. Generally fine footballers, but a lot of meh about them.

Yeah we don't need them

Neither has set the world on fire. However any trade will be expensive. Plus the salary.

I have no issue with us getting them and having them in our squad, if anything Keays proved you can develop and improve a player and make them perform better.

However, in regards to Rankine and Luko they definitely wont come cheap in terms of trade and salary, therein lies the biggest problem.

Lukosius would have more interest than Rankine currently.

No list manager is going to pay Rankine big overs salary wise anymore. It's pretty obvious even the Sun's are looking to downscale his contract significantly hence the contract talks stalling.

I don't think talent is Rankine's problem at all. If he actually cared about playing football he'd probably be a star, but he plays football so he can be a football player when he's not at the club.

I think we could get Rankine fairly cheaply, compared to the value thrown around that it would cost us when he first went up there. He hasn't lived up to expectations and I think the suns would probably let him go for a 2nd rounder, or even an early 3rd rounder if they wanted to move him on.

I think trengove could have bucked that trend but for career destroying injury

Luko should be looking at Jack Gunston to mould his game on. That's his niche.

He's yet to come close to showing that.
Run home to Mum at the first chance?

Rankine may be gettable with our 2nd rounder, mind you thats likely to be a pick in the 20s. Its what I expect the Suns as a minimum would want.

James Rowe was pick 38, which in reality, Rankine should be around that mark.

You reckon anyone gives 2 shots about that on the coast?
