I can’t decide if I am pissed of at darling for being an anti vaxxer or that he was trying to be clever with his sick leave thing.

He would have had more kudos for “not an anti vaxxer, just like WFH”.

My guess is he thinks that soon, the button will be pushed, all is vaccinated sheeple will drop dead, and he’ll be able to turn around, stroll into the open goal and seal the game………

Another good reason to get the jab.

Imagine the world being run by the nut job conspiracy theorists and Trump supporters.

I think I’d prefer to keel over from the jab than be left alone with that lot thanks very much.

I feel sorry for Jack. We literally have Covid going viral right now in a state that's fully vaxxed, shut and masked - so what was the point of this?

Well you just proved you have NFI on what the vaccine's role is.

Go for a holiday to somewhere the vaccine roll out is not as stringent or available. The picture is pretty clear.

Jack’s made his choice. Whatever happens from here, we can’t control it.

We got him for a discount price because of the best school camp ever, he was an All Aus and absolutely pivotal in 2018, plus that third quarter of the GF was phenomenal. Respect to Jack Darling the football player. Should have made it to 300 so if he doesn’t it will be very disappointing, but as was stated above - Jack’s made his decision, Venables didn’t get to, Shep didn’t get to. I don’t agree with the decision but he’s sticking to it by the looks so there we go, I can’t feel sorry for him there.

The one thing I am very interested in is, assuming he’s the only player in the AFL not jabbed; what does he think is going to happen? As in, does he think all of his teammates are going to keel over at some point this season or in the future? I know he’s claiming to have a medical condition but not sure who is buying that. If it’s as simple as his partner and family are anti vax and he’s come around to that - what does he think will happen to every other player in footy this year?

My read on the medical condition claim is that it is purely monetary/legal.

i.e. anti-vax, he can be put on the $30k p.a. prorata minimum, but as medical leave his wage would have to be the same.

It doesn't really relate in any way to him getting the jab, or not, because of underlying medical issues. (obviously it does indicate though that he is probably much more likely not to get the jab than to get it - but I'm not sure I'm giving much insight there that isn't already well known).

If I understand you correctly, that is my assumption too. Jack has gone, ruh-roh, I'mma need to get vaxxed or lose a chunk of cash. I ain't gonna get vaxxed, so what should I do? A-ha, a workplace injury claim. That should do it.

Looking forward to Jack's memoirs

Yeah same, by saying he has a medical condition and away from work because of that rather than refusing to get the jab he has a legal case to his contracted salary! By saying that he hopes to be back training and playing soon, is a way of saying I'm not refusing to train and play but my medical condition won't allow me. This is his defence.

IMO this is incredibly selfish, you're screwing over the club that would've been so good to him and all your team mates who would normally be mates for life. We can place him on the inactive list, but it gets really grey here as is it for not being jabbed or for work place injury - the money paid under each scenario is very different.

bye bye birdie GIF

His "workplace injury" is almost certainly a mental stress claim. He obviously had no physical troubles when he was out training by himself a few weeks ago.

Having viewed this many times from the employer's perspective, getting a doctor to sign off on a sick leave certificate for stress is a walk in the park. How long they give you depends on how dodgy/sympathetic the doctor is.

But if we sack him or put him on the inactive list and he brings a claim, he won't have much success. It's pretty clear that we would have taken that step not because he is sick but because he couldn't fulfil the requirements of the job.

This is premature but imagine Darling gets terminated and ends up somewhere else next year.

First game against the Eagles at Optus - does he get cheered, polite applause or booed out of the building?

He can't have been the first person to have attempted claiming a medical condition to avoid the jab, be off work and be fully paid.
Surely this hasn't worked out for many people I'd imagine, and you would normally only be able to be off work for stress/mental related or non physical condition for a limited period of time unless it's very severe.
If it is, surely it'll have to be medically assessed by the club or the league rather than relying on his personal doctor's advice.
Ben Simmons basically claimed the same thing to avoid returning to the 76ers after they refused to trade him but the team fined him.
He also refused assistance from the team.

Which is a sad indictment on how intolerant people have become.

"I know my cousin posted some racist stuff on social media, but we really should be tolerant of everyone"

No, if you're an adult and you post and promote things that are harmful I reserve the right to not tolerate you.

Additionally imagine if he actually made up the work related injury to avoid being vaccinated in light of recently seeing Venables retire due to an actual work related injury and how hard he worked to get back on the park, it would make an absolute mockery of that.
