When Caleb Daniel stops wearing his.

When is ginnivan gonna wear a helmet
Don't encourage him. They look terrible. I used to hate running out when a teammate had a t shirt or singlet under his guernsey, and helmets have the same affect on me. If you can't get a kick you can at least look like a footballer! Brayshaw is a great example. I want to rip his helmet off every time I see him. Sorry. It's a bit of a hang up of mine. Probably why I struggle to watch juniors! Do they actually make any difference as far as concussion is concerned? My brother was a boxer and he wore the head gear when he sparred he used to come home with bad headaches and black eyes anyway.

They are increasingly going without headgear in amateur boxing.

One problem is that it can make fighters too cavalier, lessening the focus on defence with a false sense of security. The other issue is that they compromise vision, especially peripheral.

But I'm not too sure that the same concerns hold for footy and helmets. Perhaps they're handy if you're being slung to the hard ground?

No, they don’t, they’re protective against skull fractures only.

Yeah my mate had to wear one throughout his whole career because when he was born he had to have part of his skull removed. Good footballer and hard as nails but he hated wearing the thing cause people on the field would run past him and call him soft for wearing one. I always thought it made him play better after someone said something. 😂

"Helmets may have a role in the protection of players on return to play following specific injuries (e.g. face or skull fractures). Overall, however there is insufficient scientific evidence to make a recommendation for the use of helmets for the prevention of concussion in Australian Football."

For concussion there is no evidence they help and may actually be detrimental in a couple of ways:
- Create a false sence of confidence.
- The size of your head increases and therefore increases the likely hood that there will be contact.

They might reduce the chance of a fracture, but your head will still stop just as abruptly, so the brain will hit just as hard against the inside of your skull.

Can't believe Dangerfield is still whining and sulking about the alleged chicken wing incident with Ginnivan. What a hypocrite. Someone posted a pic of him pinning one of DeGoey's arms and hurling him into the turf. How is that any less malicious and Ginnivan had no case to answer.

My most disliked player in the league. Hope he never wins a premiership.

Not criticising you or anything, but where that comes from is a dodgy AFL website last updated a long time ago. Dr Alan Pearce (a notable neurologist) and Peter Jess (a player agent and concussion advocate) are two independent sources who have openly criticised the AFL's handling of concussion research and so I take what they publish with a grain of salt. No helmet will ever eliminate the potential for concussion but they may be able to reduce force applied to the head (F=ma) and thus decrease the severity of a hit. I'd like some independent research and engineering into helmets because their design hasn't changed a lot and if well designed, could have the potential to make the game safer.

One or two country football deaths may have been prevented had a helmet been worn. I do not have a source (and I could be wrong) but if I recall correctly, it was mentioned in a coronial inquest or review by the officiating league.

The helmets NFL players wear don't stop concussion.
They are dangerous weapons as well.
The helmets in the NFL are heavy, clunky objects and despite their refinements, do not eliminate the many risks of such a sport. The NFL is dangerous for almost every position beyond punters, kickers and placeholders (and even they have their moments). And yes, they are very dangerous weapons as shown by the video below.

Concussions are the price these athletes pay for their sport and the benefits it gives them.

Concussions come from the brain bashing against the inside of the skull when the head changes direction or stops suddenly. For helmets to reduce concussions, they need to stop the head jolting and rotating rapidly from a hit or suddenly stopping when the head hits something that doesn't give - like the ground. AFL helmets are very unlikely to do either, but yes they might be able to design ones that do a little bit.

If Ginni goes down with concussion over the next two weeks, you jinxing pricks are all dead.

Unless we win the flag of course.

It's in the star. Ginni gets a free for headbutting Mccartins elbow, but is concussed in the process. Henry comes on for him and nails the kick for goal. And goes on to get selected for the granny where he kicks a bag of goals leading us to the cup. He then decides to stay and Ginni and Henry go on to become the most unlikely pair of dominant Aussie sporting heroes since Woodford and Woodbridge.

So Ginni misses out on our flag? I don't accept that as a legitimate fantasy.
