The prior is important, as Noble shouldn't do his trick when he's had prior as it opens up the free against him. When he's had prior, Selwood will stretch out his arms in that case so he's more likely to dish off, which stops his trick from milking as many frees because he can't force the tacklers arm up - he'll still get some frees from dropping low.
I like Jordys way of stopping Selwood ,ie just rip his head of if he ducks.

Unfortunately I don't think it's intentional. JDG is just out of control when trying to tackle. They've really got to do some serious work on JDGs tackling. It's bloody awful.

Agree with JDG's tackling - he looks unco.
Re Duckwood drive into him and make him hurt - EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I was thinking Ginnovan was the guy we needed in the GWS prelim we lost by under a goal. Ball in forward half he could have drawn a free and got us into a GF. It is a skill.
Probably the only time I'd be ok with that but it's not a good look right now.

He is every chance to suffer the same fate as Rhys Mathieson once he got worked out, needs to add something else to his game.

I'm happy to stay away from the Ginnivan threads from now on as the arm lift & knee drops are a personal pet hate of mine. Carry on!!!!!!!!!

You wouldn’t like Pendles then… been lifting the arm for years. Not every time, ala Ginnivan, but regularly enough that it’s not an accident, nor an attempt to shrug.

I do think he needs to add some more tricks to his bow. The free kick skill will only get him so far. Selwood is pro at the free kick but he’s also a freaking good, courageous footballer, as much as it pains me to admit. I’m happy to see how Ginnivan develops though. Puopolo was also a regular arm raiser and had a decent career.

I hated it, but in his defence he has taken it out of his game. Like I said before it’s just a pet hate of mine. Not everyone feels the same obviously.

Yes, I’m often more annoyed that our players don’t tackle him properly.

‘Usually they do tackle him properly. But as soon as the old arm lifts to induce a high tackle it becomes illegal. I’d probably have no problem with that if they just called play on.

This. If you’re astute at the art form, you can turn a legit tackle into a high tackle. It’s then up to the umpires to adjudicate. They seem to err on the side of free kick. Pendles still does it on occasion just not as often as others.

I thought they changed the rule a few years back. Something along the lines of “point of first contact” which meant if the tackler hit the shoulder and then the tackle went high, it was no longer a free kick.

Not sure if that happened but the umpires always still pay the high contact free kick.

I think Selwood has copped the can for umpires not adjusting quickly enough - the frees shouldn't have been paid. Once tackling moved to pinning the arms, he was the first to adjust. I think he would have used the technique even if they weren't called frees, because if the arms are pinned, you can't push the arm down - pushing it up is the best way to get off a handball, unless you are a real brute who can break the tackle fully.

I know there are some examples of him blatantly playing for frees, but that goes for a lot players. It's the huge number he got for pushing the arm up that have given him the reputation.

Sorry sr we won't agree on this - I have tremendous respect for his skill and courage but he is the archetypical stager, whenever he gets the ball in close quarters he is lining HIMSELF up for the tackle, stage managing the encounter before contact.

I've watched him closely and nothing will convince me otherwise - a superb player who cheapens the game with crass staging.

Yeah, we're not going to agree. I love him and wish had had've been a pie.

Never mind it would be pretty dull if everyone felt the same on everything.

As it stands a soaring talent badly tarnished by crass staging for me.

No question. Selwood has perfected it. Anyone that thinks he’s trying to ‘break the tackle’ is literally deluded. Other players have taken on the art form but Selwood is the king. Has smashed the ‘free kicks for’ stat to smithereens. Nothing like it has ever been seen at the top level.
It took Scott West 324 games to rack up the AFL record of 584 free kicks.
Selwood beat it after 222 games, and has now got 839 frees for in his career. It’s mind boggling.

Players mimic him and to be fair, you can hardly blame them.

He is going alright again this week , people who are saying he does not pressure enough should watch him closely, 4 games in and he is close to the smartest player on our list, absolute steal.
I know, you have to laugh at some of the so called talent experts on BF, he's a gun and hasn't even got started yet, wait and see him in a couple of years

I loved him first time I saw him in the VFL.

Love players that punch above their height.
