Jack Gunston - Hawthorn bound

I still think that Gunston is worth a high teens pick however the post I wrote that had those half dozen similar trades was to show that clubs generally don't get fair value.
So in this instance the Crows will likely have to settle for 24 and West Coast will likely have to settle for 28 for Ebert although Port would be entirely unjustified in offering up 33 instead.
Now in the Gunston trade one thing that hasn't been spoken about is "coin".
What if Hawthorn are offering 350 large while North and the Crows had offered him $200k.
I know who I'd want to play for? I'd even play for Richmond with that disparity.

He has nominated the Hawks, whilst looking promising he has yet to prove a thing. Mumford, Jaccobs and Gibson all far better players and their clubs recieved nothing better than a mid 20's pick.

They're better players than Gunston now. They weren't better players than Gunston when they were traded.

I do love the idea of providing three one-off examples and using them as the reason that Gunston isn't worth much. Cameron Wood was pick 14 and Justin Sherman, Richard Tambling and David Hale were worth end of first round compo picks, and Gunston has more value than them, so he must be top 10!

People need to stop using past trades which turned out to be a rip-off as justification for why their club should be able to rip off another club in a current trade.

Pick 24 and a fringe player is adequate for this bloke, too much overating of a bloke that had a day out against Richmond. Lindsay Thomas kicked 8 against Carlton last year he must be a top 10 pick

Adelaide should just be glad that they are getting rid of a bloke that sounds like a knob for something decent.
Take the Richmond game out of it then; his performances are still impressive; add his SANFL work, and even more so.

Gibson had a top 5 b&f finish before being traded. I think he has Gunston covered. In fact they all did.

Hell.....on that note I might even be tempted to put on a Port Adelaide jumper. Ohhhh, on second thoughts.......NO

So how many years were Hawthorn in the competition before they won a premiership 36 sound familiar. How many did it take Port 7.

You're a powerhouse of the competition that everyone aspires to be.

By the way between 1925 and 1961 Port only won 11 SANFL premiership - bit of a lean time for us.

I fail to see your point......this is a discussion about a possible trade of an Adelaide player to Hawthorn. I fail to see what this has to do with Port.

I just can't let comments like "Hell.....on that note I might even be tempted to put on a Port Adelaide jumper. Ohhhh, on second thoughts.......NO " go through to the keeper without retort . It's highly disrespectful to the club I support.

I love the double standard that you apply. If I were a Richmond supporter, I might be offended that you would "even consider playing for Richmond"......is that your club of last resort.

I would have thought that you would recognise the proud history of the RFC in much the same way that you would consider the history of your own club.

Fair enough but logical arguments have no place on this forum!

I will say though I'm just trying to debunk the myth (largely generated by the SA media) that Port are on their last legs and there's no way back. We made the grand final 5 years ago FFS and comments like yours only try to perpetuate that myth.

The strange thing is, I reckon Hawthorn would struggle to match the offers of clubs like Essendon, North and the Bulldogs due to a tight salary cap (assuming that they can fund a full cap). For this reason it seems bizarre that Gunston nominated Hawthorn, as it is the Bombers who he has links to (father recently a board member). It would appear that a deal was proposed during or immediately after our season concluded.

LOL! How long are you drawing that bow back now!

Shit I didn't know his SANFL record was so magnificent. Definatley shouldn't settle for anything less than Buddy, Rioli and all of Hawthorn's picks:rolleyes:
What are you looking for? 100 games of experience? A few Coleman Medals?

He's a 19 year old kid in only his second year. His trade value is obviously going to be speculative to a degree and based on future potential.

BTW just as a sidenote:

Sam "The Next Coming" Reid: 23 games, 22 goals
Jack "I've never seen him but he's worth a 2nd rounder" Gunston: 14 games, 20 goals

Very poor comparision........Sam Reid is playing as a number one or number 2 forward, often against the best defender.
Gunston has been playing predominantly as a 3rd forward behind Walker and Tippet.

But what I do like about Gunston is that he knows where to lead......even as a 3rd forward, which he will be if he finds his way to Hawthorn.

I think you will find that Hawthorns financial position is very sound.......the club has turned significant profits over the last 5 or more years thanks to record membership and a premiership in 2008. Funding the cap will not be a problem

Saints salary cap issues seem to propose that we will have to get rid of a few players this week.
Sam Gilbert and 3rd round pick for Gunston and Armstrong? How does that sound?

Sammy is a vey exciting and talented player but I feel is expendable for St Kilda and Gunston would fit the 3rd forward bill very nicely for us. Always been a bit of a fan of Armstrong too (as he can kick a footy accurately) which many saints players find it difficult to do. Seems like a pretty decent trade to me?

edit - looks like armstrong wants to head home to NSW, shame

The point I make is that value for young players (ESPECIALLY forwards) is based on potential.

The bigfooty consensus seems to be that Reid is worth a top 5 pick. Is that based on his grand accomplishments in the AFL? Hell no, he's not even averaging a goal a game. People see the raw ability, athleticism, contested marking in glimpses and imagine the player he could develop into.

I'd argue Gunston has shown just as much, but no one outside of Adelaide supporters took notice because we were bloody irrelevant to the competition.

Don't think that's too bad a suggestion to be honest.

A smaller version of SnowRoo's trade:

North gain: Lisle, pick 24, pick 46
North lose: Campbell, pick 18

Hawks gain: Campbell, Gunston
Hawks lose: Lisle, pick 24, pick 46

Crows gain: pick 18
Crows lose: Gunston

North gain: Lisle, pick 24, pick 46
North lose: Campbell, pick 18

Hawks gain: Campbell, Gunston
Hawks lose: Lisle, pick 24, pick 46

Crows gain: pick 18
Crows lose: Gunston
would much rather not use hawthorn in this trade and just do pick 18 to the crows for gunston to north

Where did I say anything like that?

He's a kid in his second year; you want to ignore his best game, fair enough, take that out of it, his performances are still impressive. In the interest of fairness, remove his worst game as well; even more impressive. And then, like most second year players, he's spent a fair bit of time in the state comp, has shown a lot in it, but you want to ignore that too?

So what exactly are we meant to judge him on, in your opinion?

A Roos supporter talking absolute shit - you aren't Sooz's lastest alias are you?
