He clearly has talent but has been in a confused, directionless environment for his entire time in the AFL. Given a strong leadership group, good coaching and a well defined role, the kid could be a steal.

Kid can play, just lacks confidence and it's particularly hard to have confidence in an environment like Melbourne's at the moment. Having said that I still wouldnt go after him, asking price I foresee as being way too high and I think we're still quite comfortable with our KPP's at the moment, forward and back.

If hawthorn couldn't harden up beau dowler what's different with Jack Watts?

Was the same draft as Shoey - although maligned shoey is way way ahead of him, both physically and mentally (and has taken on far greater roles)

We found a spot for Gunston in the forward pocket. Not sure where Watts would fit in, though. Unless we could turn him into a key defender. Could be possible provided Melbourne don't want much for him. The fact he was a number 1 draft pick has no relevance to his current value.

Perhaps a straight swap for Ellis

In all seriousness, I would support this. Both very high draft picks so on the surface 'equitable' interms of draft pick 'investment'.

Change of scenery may be the best thing for both of them. I do rate Ellis and certainly have not given up on him, but with Anderson and Hill making rapid progress this season and with both players having huge potential for further development I feel Ellis is quickly losing ground.

We're not going to get Jack Watts cheap. There's enough teams out there who'd love to have a go at Jack to bump up his price to beyond his current worth.

Why would Franklin go to the Blues. To use their own marketing words.......they are cooked. Would love Franklin to go to the blues (if he leaves). Means they will continue to be irrelevant for even longer.

The one thing that every hawthorn Player, Assistant Coach, member, Supporter and all the employees all agree on is: Clarkson will not tolerate anything less than going hard at the ball and man each time, every time and all the time...... I can't back Watts to do that so I doubt Clarko would.

Agree with this. When I see him try and lay a hit like Jed did against Pendlebury on Sunday and repeat the dose multiple times maybe. Nothing I have seen suggests he has the appetite for it though.

Imagine Watts with the likes of Hodge, Mitch, Lewis, Birch, Burgoyne, Gibbo, Guerra etc setting the standards and offering leadership. Not to mention Clarko.
For the next few years he would get the 4th or 5th defender.
If down back the 4th of 5th forward

His improvement would be astonishing.

Cant see it happening though.

You don't pick up players that haven't shown anything at senior level. Sure, Melbourne have stuffed it up but those early years are important for development.

I think our environment would improve him a lot but he would be behind a lot of players that have already shown a lot of hunger and development.

If you were really contemplating recruiting him you would get inhis ear and say "tick these boxes over the next couple of months and we will advance discussions". Then if he improves his output in the desired areas enough you convince him to request a trade.
