When asked he provided the clarification quote I supplied you.

He ruled out a direct swap.

Case closed.
So what you're saying is that Bains never actually ruled out trading pick 5?

Shit. When I and others were trying to clarify that to Saints supporters over a week ago, when they were still saying that pick 24 + Hickey is the best we'd get, I guess they were in the wrong huh?

I don't think anyone said that - simply that pick 5 by itself was on the table, and in the wash up it wasn't.
-"Getting a good player out of another club always presents its challenges. Essendon said it wants our pick No.5 – our expectations may be a bit different."

- "It's a difficult start if you've got one club saying that pick five is what they're after and you've got another saying they won't relinquish it, Bains said.

- “Our view is that pick five is excessive. We won’t be trading pick five,” Bains told the Herald Sun. “Adrian (Dodoro, Essendon list manager) has publicly stated that Essendon are keen on pick five. But we will look to get a deal done a different way.”

I don't see any mention of straight swap in any of those quotes? Good that Ameet came to his senses and backed down though.

Well there's Ameet saying that very thing, plus Dodoro stated that saints had said pick 5 was off the table late last week.
I was more referring to the 1000 odd posts from saints fans across all the Carlisle threads who stuck to that rant...

The problem with this protracted negotiation is that it hamstrings any other negotiations either club might want to make.

The big Vic clubs play hardball every year and barely get anything done while Geelong and Hawthorn go out and make things happen and get a few things done without their supporters jumping up and down screaming to hold out for better.

If all Essendon achieves this draft period is getting rid of Carlisle for a good draft pick, getting rid of Giles and bringing in Leuenberger, I'd count it as a failure. The structure of the team won't have changed dramatically and I can't understand bringing in Leuenberger (27yo) if we want draft picks so much.

The saints have been equally fruitless if all they do is snag Carlisle who has proven nothing and Freeman who is fast but has flimsy hamstrings and never played a game.

They're wasting each others' time to prove a point to members when they should have done a deal and moved on.

Yep they couldn't have been more wrong.

But Bains has stuck to his guns.

Essendons Goal - Get pick 5 - Win
Swans Goal - Get as many Academy Points as Possible - Win (Use of Bird to achieve this clever)
Saints Goal - Get Carlise - Stay in First Round - have enough points for Rice - Win Win Win

Everything thing else was just negotiating tactics not sure what Hawks got out of being used by Dodoro but that is probably a win for Essendon as well.

Weird how Saints fans are getting hung up on that clarification now.

Essendon's faux chest beaters out in force

October 6

It won't be completely out of play. e.g. Pick 5 for Carlisle and pick 23.

Well done on agreeing with Essendon fans back then.

Our digs are directed at the Saints fans who couldn't understand reality.

Melksham trade.
Leuenberger free agency.
Giles trade.
Carlisle trade.

That's plenty of activity and there's still two days left.

My take on it was that StKilda had clearly lined up Sydney to do the 2 seconds for 14 and were therefore happy to offer Essendon pick five if we got Essendon's second back.
Dodoro then wanted more because ....... well because he's hard to deal with.
Sydney were able to sweeten the deal with Bird, who will be good for a team at Essendon's stage of development, so it became a 3 way.

Sydney benefit by overall points gain, so they can be more flexible in shopping for academy players , who were already looking like being a bargain.

It really sucks that 3 of the top 6 draft prospects are in the NSW or GWS academy but....

Gee, well done to Dodoro for getting pick 5 for a sook who's surplus to our needs. A defender that we had to force up forward because we have two All-Australian tall defenders.

Cap room, Parish and hopefully Francis, plus Craig Bird as a little sweetener. All on top of Melksham for a 2nd rounder and Leuenberger for free. Dodoro's killing it.

I love all this "3rd best defender" stuff! :D

He wasn't moved out of defence because he was 3rd best back there was he? Wasn't it because your club felt he was the best of those 3 options up forward?

After all, he had just come 6th in the B&F (in 2013), at just 21yo and finished ahead of Hooker there (he came 9th) and there is no sign of Hurley in that top 10, so I would have thought he was at the time your no.1 "key defender" and he was also the youngest of the lot!

The other two have obviously gone past him since, but I think it's safe to say much of that is due to the failed experiment of playing Jake forward, which seemed to really mess with him. Had he continued playing down back he may easily have made an AA team there by now as well.

Had he not wanted out of Essendon at pretty much any cost I dare say he would have continued to be one of the two key pillars of your backline, as he was at the end of this year, which would have freed Hooker up to continue playing forward, where he showed plenty this year and gave much needed support for Daniher.

Now you're back to square-one of trying to find someone who is able to support Joe there and kick some goals, so I'm not sure that result is really something to be celebrating all that hard!
