Toast James Sicily - Hawthorn captain 2023 - AA 2023!

The young players are tight and the club is holding up well against a lot of external issues (Racism investigation, tanking allegations, being 1-8).
I would say a lot of credit would need to go to Sicily and what he's doing off-field
In every video and pre game work I have seen his an amazingly calming influence for a young group that is under a lot of pressure. His still growing into his captaincy to but already it’s showing great signs.

In the game at the weekend Dunstall on the commentary made a big thing of Fritsch out marking Sicily and saying that it was the first marking contest Sicily had had a mark taken on him all year, which is obviously very impressive.

Doesn't that now show up as losing a 1:1?
I don't recall that contest. Did someone come in to assist or was there another Melbourne player there?

Inevitable.

Shouldn’t have been required in the first place.

He’s 28 years old…..and apparently a club leader.
Ridiculous that he should have to do that. How petulant are Tasmanians that his comments would require an apology.

Pretty staggering when he had 7 kicked on him by Cameron, I’m guessing he didn’t get close enough to him for it to be counted as a contest lol
I'm sure he also lost a couple of one-on-ones against Cameron too.
Wonder what a 1-on-1 contest actually is. It probably foesnt count if a player is less than a couple of metres away (a bit like a contested mark can be counted if your opponent trips over and you mark unopposed)

Nah not at all.

Sic was his direct opponent for 2 goals, one was a free kick and the other was a completely unpressured kick on a lead that Sicily didn't have a snowballs chance in hell of covering.

It's a 1:1 contest? I'm not sure how that's a difficult thing to understand?

Two people contest the same ball, you either win or lose or neutralise it. It only counts where players are physically contesting the same ball, so a joe the goose or a kick to a leading forward doesn't count. The players need to have physical contact.

Well, I guess the stats are wrong? How is this not a 1:1?

I guess stats can say anything you like.
Spot on analysis. He was really poor in the first half last week, carrying on from a terrible game against Fremantle the week before.

The lack of acceptance showcases the Hawthorn coloured glasses that are littered throughout this forum.

The other one in the second quarter, which I am sure you saw, was his horrid corraling effort on the wing, which followed him walking back to the D50 as his opponent charged forward.

He played a lot better in the second half, and I truly hope that was a result of some strong feedback from the coaches on his previous six quarters.

I'm not having a go at Sicily btw, just the stat.

I thought it strange when it was brought up on here a couple of weeks ago, even Frost last year (or 21) had some incredible stat about it.
Frost's contested defensive loss percentage each year:
2023 - 26.7%
2022 - 34.4%
2021 - 19.3% (pretty ****ing good) although alot of our defenders in 2021 had pretty good ratings because our defensive structure was preferred to offensive under Clarko.

I get the point on the mark Petty took. I don't understand how that isn't recorded as a contested defensive 1:1, particularly if it's recorded as a contested mark.

Where Sicily is covering ground in a rotating defense and a ball comes in to a lead and is unpressured, I completely understand that not being classified as the same. I also understand the Gawn one if Gawn has blown past and is not being contested at the time of taking the mark.

I wouldn't hold my breath on getting an answer from Champion Data.

Sicily’s season has been fine - as a player. Not as good as last year where he was incredible, but would probably still be top 5 in the B&F so far. I accept some of the concerns from a captaincy / body language point of view but the criticism of his play is off the mark. We are absolutely under siege down back every week due to poor pressure up the field. Finding a way to free him up to be the best attacking force he can be is a challenge for the coaches

Yep.

This is why we desperately need DGB to make it as a Key Defender. Not a third tall defender stuck behind Sicily.

Sorry I forgot about this and I see there's been some further debate on it, if you go on the AFL site to the Melb-Haw match on the timeline it actually mentions it at 9:40 1st quarter, as it's the first one he's lost in 24. In the screen shot I've attached they had body on body just prior to the screenshot (which could look as if it were an uncontested mark with Sicily running in to man the mark).
