Maybe it was the people I hung around with, but no one I knew thought of this day as a patriotic day at all. It was just a day off to have a BBQ and relax with friends. No more or less imprtant than Labor day for example.

Yep. Was always hottest 100 day as a teenager until I got older and realised triple J sucks.

Now I just enjoy the lay-in. (Small children so there sure as shit ain't a sleep in)

Notwithstanding the political debate, I think the timing of Australia Day makes perfect sense in these modern times.

It comes about a fortnight after most people have returned from work which helps smooth people into the work grind. And its during summer and January is generally the best time of year weather wise in Australia. There are also major events happening such as the tennis, cricket as well as events that suit January such as night markets, beaches etc.

Personally I find that Australia Day kick starts my work year. Puts a full stop to the holiday period.

I am Jack's utter lack of surprise.

What happens for the vast majority of Australians when it comes to this discussion is this.

1. Wtf is the problem with the 26th?!? I've not followed any of it, but it seems like some woke shit.
2. Hey, so we all love and celebrate Australia, but it turns out that the 26th is a celebration of colonising Australia. As in viewing Aboriginal people as subhuman and celebrating a date that is viewed as congealing the slaughter of innocent people.
1. Oh damn, I had no idea. Yeah please change the date, I don't support any of that. I just love the holiday. Time for some beach or street cricket, and get on the beers!.

Rant against racists below.

The problem is that there are dickheads who view Aboriginal people as subhuman.
And they will literally fight to keep a specific date for a holiday, rather than let it be a more beneficial holiday, because they want a day to celebrate their 'ethnic superiority'.
The idea that it hurts or harms Aboriginal people, is just the vinegar stroke for them.
The idea of Aboriginal people being treated as equals in any form, is a knife in the back to these people.
They have literally nothing in their lives, other than the idea that genetically they're superior to others.
They make statements like 'If only I was an Aboriginal lesbian in a wheelchair, my life would be on easy street'.
And they really believe it, because in their minds, Aboriginal people shouldn't just have nothing, that they should be actively pushed beneath the surface. So the idea that they could ever reach the greatest heights of the lowest rung, means that a white person is missing out... As there is no way an Aboriginal person could ever achieve anything on merit...
