All public holidays the world over are problematic if you look hard enough to be offended.National days observe significant events. The founding of a prison colony is not one.
Australia is not special.

I mentioned this very fact many moons ago
Maybe it was the people I hung around with, but no one I knew thought of this day as a patriotic day at all. It was just a day off to have a BBQ and relax with friends. No more or less imprtant than Labor day for example.
Notwithstanding the political debate, I think the timing of Australia Day makes perfect sense in these modern times.
It comes about a fortnight after most people have returned from work which helps smooth people into the work grind. And its during summer and January is generally the best time of year weather wise in Australia. There are also major events happening such as the tennis, cricket as well as events that suit January such as night markets, beaches etc.
Personally I find that Australia Day kick starts my work year. Puts a full stop to the holiday period.
I don't think a majority of Australians really care when Australia Day is, they do however care about a minority opinion about Australia Day needing to be moved being forced upon them by the vocal left wing minority.
Just co-ordinate a plebiscite at the same time as an election and do whatever the majority votes.
If people don't like the result, suggest they move to a non democratic society.
I don’t think a majority would care (or view this as something forced upon them) if the likes of Sky News didn’t spend so much energy telling them they should be offended by the idea.I don't think a majority of Australians really care when Australia Day is, they do however care about a minority opinion about Australia Day needing to be moved being forced upon them by the vocal left wing minority.

The problem is that there are dickheads who view Aboriginal people as subhuman. And they will literally fight to keep a specific date for a holiday, rather than let it be a more beneficial holiday, because they want a day to celebrate their 'ethnic superiority'.
Can't we just make it the last Friday in Jan every year? Satisfies the people who have an issue with the date and makes it a proper long weekend, rather than sometimes falling weirdly in the middle of the week.
Bring the hottest 100 back to the day as well and it should work pretty well.
Yep. Was always hottest 100 day as a teenager until I got older and realised triple J sucks.
Now I just enjoy the lay-in. (Small children so there sure as shit ain't a sleep in)
Yes, I do. The vote of an Aboriginal person holds just as much weight as that of a non indigenous person.Do you really think it is a democratic society for all Aboriginal people?

Their knowledge, or care for utilising that knowledge, is on them. The ability to vote is provided, and their vote is worth that of any other person in Australia, including politicians.Do you think that many of the remote Aboriginal communities truly know about voting and understand the process and impact.

I think this digresses from the thread topic though.
who cares, have the day or don't, re-name it or don't.. aas long as get a day off somewhere along the line couldn't GAF.
Which I would be one. But what becomes of jan 26?? National day of shame and mourning? My stance is that Jan 26 becomes a day of reflection not too dissimilar to ANZAC Day. No one can change the past but we can acknowledge and move forward. If it was changed, those who are against changing it, will get over it within a week. Take it to the bank.
Change the date, move on and be done with it.
We knowI care that the date is changed.
