Nothing makes people do crazier things than tradition. We'll put on costumes, decorate trees, or sing on command. And we do it all for no other reason than that people have always done it. Another Australia day beckons and once again we can all get together and give each other a big hug knowing we live in such a great country during these troublesome world times. Everyone can down a pot, have a pie, cook up some snags on the barbie and have a no holds barred laugh at ourselves and anyone else for that matter Aussie style. However, that will be far from the truth on Sunday as we sadly make complete clowns of ourselves and embarrass the nation as we celebrate our version of "punch your neighbour" day.

Seems like all the discourse about the date so far is News Corp outrage. Herald Sun have dialed up the nationalism this year with articles popping up in my feed left, right and centre. One is heavily critical of the protests, which is very funny from fierce defenders of freedom of speech like Andrew Bolt.

One also continues to include a claim that the Australian Open is being hijacked even though this has been refuted by protest organisers, with a far right flag waving affair occuring at Melbourne Park instead. Obviously truth isn't as fun as getting everyone outraged.

It’s odd to be ‘proud’ of your country, as if you were somehow responsible for it. I’m pleased to live in a relatively safe and secure country, I feel fortunate to have the life I have, but I also recognise that it’s not the same for everyone and we should always strive to be better. Anything else seems silly.

I wasn't born in Australia and am not patriotic to any country. I chose to live here because it's has so many good things going for it. The outdoor lifestyle. Sense of fair play. Amazing range of food options. Great medical system. Stable political system. Low crime rate. Australia should have a national day to celebrate what a great country we are part of. It doesn't imply we think we are superior to everyone else.

Canada had the red ensign (Union Jack in the corner) as the de facto flag, recognised as the flag of Canada.

Exactly the same as the Union Jack which, believe it or not, is not officially in UK law as their official national flag.

So not only do we have another nation’s flag as our national flag that flag isn’t even the official flag of that nation!

Seriously though, thanks Billy ray , looks like it was the last Friday in July for the years during WW1. And a bit of confusion and a mess before that as each state (colony!) had its own date prior to that. So the first unified date was the last Friday of July. Surely Dutton, a stickler for tradition(!) would be more than happy with that day.

Or was Ellen Wharton Kirke MBE, mother of 4 enlisted sons in WW1, "woke" before her time...?!

Nobody talks about Skyhooks anymore which is a shame. Living in the 70s was such a good album, they talked about places in Melbourne not LA or New York, the pondered on the post Vietnam malaise, and the realism of the six o'clock news, more than half of it was banned ffs yet it turned fifty last year almost unmarked.
