Why? He is head of football.
Jeff or our CEO would be making the sorts of statements I think you are looking for.

It's not about who said it. I am wanting someone to address this and have a strong statement of fact that we are a proud HAWTHORN club and will stay where we belong. This is the first moment someone from the club has said something about Jeff's comments and this is what we get. I am disappointed with how we as a club have handled this and more specifically handled Jeff...

Why does threatening to relocate there, when Tassie wants a stand-alone team, force Tassie into extending our deal? If the Tasmanian government wants to deliver on a team based in Tasmania how exactly does giving them this objective panic them? The Tassie government isn’t stupid - if they have a report stating a team there would be an economic success then they wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth and say no to a relocated team. And again if this is a bluff with zero intention to actually move the team - why do you think Gutewin - a successful businessman and politician himself - is too stupid to know this?
Imagine being the Premier of a State that loses AFL footy altogether !

I’ve got to say that I’m surprised there’s been no further comment from Kennett or the club knocking it on the head and yes I know that will annoy the Tasmanian Govt. but seriously he should never have opened his mouth in the first place

I live in WA so there’s no noise about this over here - what’s the reaction from hawk supporters been like on the east coast outside of BF
Nothing would upset the Tas govt more than Jeff's comments that a Tas team is not financially viable and that we might move there. That is the exact opposite of what they would want to hear and is harming the club's relationship with their major sponsor as well as 90% of their supporters.

On another tangent, I often wonder how the 1996 merger stuff and the Oakley admin generally would have fared in the social media age?

They pulled it off at the absolute last possible opportunity. The rise of web forums to mobilise fans, share counter-intel to combat the agreed media narrative and attract sympathisers would’ve saved the Roys. Bigfooty is as responsible as any person for keeping North in Victoria and not relocating to the Gold Coast.

Why would we want to play 8 home games at a venue where we draw less than 12,000 (for 4 games) and where less than 10,000 of our 85,000 members reside?

How would we go attracting commercial partners and cotorie members when our offering includes 8 games in a tram yard next to the UTAS campus?

Nothing like a 4.40pm Sunday match live from UTAS to wet the appetite of our commercial sponsors

I’m not saying we would, but i can see how Jeff et al would be frustrated with the lack of negotiation surrounding a partnership that our club fostered for over a decade only for it to be highjacked as a bargaining chip.

So what's the point then?

Bastardising our brand for a year or two, providing little value for money for our Victorian members (which absolutely dwarf Tasmania in number and spend) only to lose the gains when Tasmania get a standalone team anyway?

At least when Carlton offered to play 11 games in Sydney in the early 1990's (and Jeff is basically the John Elliot of the 00's) it was 11 away games

More than half the states population are children or pensioners, using the 2016 census as a guide there’s roughly 70,000 males in the 20-40 year age bracket in the state. Yet the report suggests an AFL team will increase participation at grass roots. If the state is doing nothing to retain its population then it’s not going to be viable no matter how many sports teams it has.

The tassie deal is likely in our business model to support funding Dingley. Covid and no tassie puts a big dent in that. The clubs made some big commitments it’s up to JK and co to make this succeed.

And again - what does an unsubstantiated bluff do to achieve securing a new Tassie deal. Once again - if it's a bluff then Gutewin knows it's a bluff so all he has done is attract unwanted press on the club for no net gain. Wow, I can't believe people would question his negotiation skills.

I agree, even more reason why our complete avoidance to do a deal to leave Tasmania in 2010 and again in 2014 is a real Death Star.

That said, say that hypothetical situation was to occur. How on earth do you hold 30,000 HFC MCG reserve seat members with a 2-3 game offering.

In addition the bulk of the 75,000 non Tasmanian members which I’m sure would be enamoured with the Tassie Hawks moniker.

If cash is an issue (and with a 56m NTA / 30m cash reserves position I’m not sure why it is) why are we sinking $100m into an asset which won’t generate income sources anyway?

The whole Dingley thing is looking more and more like a white elephant.

Remember we purchased the site in mid 2015 and it took us until mid 2020 to appoint a board representative with development expertise.

Governance and transparency is one of Hawthorn’s great strengths clearly

And where is that precisely?

Probably somewhere in the same city as the suburb of Hawthorn. I know what cute point you are making about Hawthorn no longer having training, administration or playing at Glenferrie - but there's a difference to playing at the MCG and training at Waverley/Dingley than being based in another state entirely. Don't pretend that it's the same thing to being some suburbs over.

Oh so it's Melbourne Hawks for you then. How cute 😉
We are becoming Hawthorn by name only and what does that mean to anyone other than those that know the suburb?
I don't believe (🤞) that we are going to relocate interstate and I do believe (🙏) that we will move to Dingley and when we do it will open up a discussion about a change of name.

The AFL clubs are all brands, all have varying strengths. Hawthorn would be one to the strongest brand names in Australian Sport.

Why ditch that and become a Western Bulldogs equivalent?

The Hawthorn name is the heritage and identity of the club - it’s not going to change. We have been Hawthorn longer than we have been the Hawks. It’s the Hawthorn Football Club and that’s what it will remain.

The New York Jets and Giants have played out of New Jersey for decades - hardly think they’re going to change to the New Jersey Jets/Giants as a result.

Perhaps one being more successful than the other has something to do with that?
For lots of interstate kids growing up and following our team, what does the name Hawthorn mean to them? I can't remember the last time I heard a young kid say c'mon Hawthorn..... c'mon Hawks is a different story

I've supported Hawthorn since I was a kid, even though I've never lived in or even near Melbourne. I don't think I have ever even been to Hawthorn the suburb. And sure, when I am yelling at the TV in the moment I'll likely say "C'mon Hawks", but if anyone asks me what team I support, 100% of the time I say Hawthorn, not the Hawks. That branding matters, in part *because* the club has been successful.

Have you ever listened to the lyrics of our team song? And yes - plenty of supporters across all age groups refer to us as ‘Hawthorn’ when barracking at games.

I get ya Ned but it's dumbest question I've ever read
And you should travel more 😉
Seriously though, the song would need a bit of tweaking to omit a certain part 🤣
I guess I've been thinking (drinking) too much with all this cancel culture going on that they will come for my club one day 🥺 and can I handle it if they do?

The fans chant 'HAWTHORN' at matches not 'HAWKERS'

Not just at the MCG and in Melbourne either...

Am I doing this right?

I always tell those who ask...."Hawthorn" because I know they hate, are jealous or envious of us.
