Come on. Such short memories. We screwed the very best out of WC over TK and GWS are trying to do the same with JC. If these guys are greedy pricks then so was Geelong. It's GWS's responsibility to get the best they can from any deal.

Everyone wants to sell at the highest price and buy at the lowest price. It's the same in real estate as it is in the stock market and at livestock sale yards. That's all this trade period amounts too, a sale of human services.

No way, Kelly wasn't an RFA for a start and alot younger. He was only at the Cats for 2 years. They are asking for more than Dangerfield, even more than Ablett the GOAT when he went to GC as well, for a guy that has given them 9 years of service. Plus they have already been given a ride on the gravy train by the AFL as well over the years (unlike Geelong who got the club to where it is through hard work and great culture), so I stand by my comment. Greedy pricks...

I agree that every club would want the most they can get. But the highest pick on offer here was the compo pick.
If they truly wanted the highest price they would take that and then we could work out a side deal so they end up with 2 firsts.
I don't think any player in history has been traded for 3 and I doubt that will happen here.

Reports this morning that Geelong were surprised that GWS matched... they have now gone into their bunker
Reports are just that. We're in a trade negotiation, Jay Clark and Mitch Cleary are going to report what the club wants them to report. Even if the club put out a press release saying they were surprised, I wouldn't believe it. They're not that naïve. Putting in the paperwork didn't harm us, and gave GWS an out. They chose to not take it, now Cameron is on their books until we do a trade which means it's in their best interests to cooperate, not ours.

Everything is speculation ... Putting paper work in early didnt help us either... I think holding off till they could also trade would have given us more leverage before they matched. Nothing has been gained from going early ..bar Geelong thinking it would all be done by the start of trade period.

This looks right. Not accepting compo makes no sense apart from trying to look tough. Given that it probably means the draft is going to be the best option for us because GWS will be demanding much more than we need to offer to pick him up. Just go to the draft and we're highly likely to get him for pick 13.

Id take the phone off the hook now ..let them sweat. Hogan just announced he wants in at GWS... hope they have cap room.

Jesse Hogan has nominated going to GWS - knock-on will be Jezza to Cats

How does it get done. No to Clark. No to Menegola. No to draft picks? Maybe. He is only worth a R3 pick. Im not sure it involves Hogan apart from Salcap

Would that be because we need to move on other trades or is that irrelevant?

Where does Preuss fit?
It's as if they can't realistically match the contract... 🤣

In all seriousness though, what happens if come Wednesday they trade in Hogan + Preuss, obviously with the expectation that Cameron is out the door, then Cameron on Friday turns around and signs their matched contract? It'd be a fire-sale to clear cap space, surely.

1. We didn't have pick 10 on the table which would've been worth close to what we could get for Kelly anyway. We likely would've accepted the compo and West Coast would've done us some other favours down the line.
2. Cameron is a 27 year old coming off an ordinary year whereas Kelly was a 25 year old who finished top 5 in the brownlow. This makes Cameron much less valuable to low clubs with early draft picks.
3. Forcing a guy who wanted to go home for family support with an autistic kid to go through the draft would look really bad for all concerned whereas there's no such issue with Cameron.
4. Fremantle could offer Kelly the same contract, the ability to return home and had picks 7 and 8 in the draft. This was a huge risk for West Coast who had nothing until pick 16. There's no club that can offer the lifestyle change we can and no club would really consider burning a top 10 draft pick on a 27 year old even if they had the cap space (unlikely).

If the draft wasn't a realistic option for us we'd be similarly forced to give up a lot. But it is. Pick 13+20 would be ok but any more just doesn't make sense since we could get him for less in the draft.

We don't know for sure about that.
As what has been mentioned already, it does sound like this was about the money all along.
Still, a trade should get done you would assume.
He has specifically said he will not return to gws. If it was only about money, he could just re-sign with gws if he wanted to.

Should be canned. It's a dog's breakfast.
If there's one thing to be learned since the inception of FA, or more particularly RFA, you should really just target the bottom clubs and pillage them while they're on their knees, as much as the media and AFL seem to be against it. Think Lynch out of Gold Coast, Frawley out of Melbourne etc. It's the top/mid range teams like Adelaide and now GWS who match contracts and restrict movement, while the broken clubs just take the compo because it's too extravagant to pass up.

As you said, a real mess.
