All of Finlayson's public statements since the incident have been awkward and open to misinterpretation. Definitely seems like either a PR failure from the club or a player who is unwilling or unable to heed advice. And before anyone jumps down my throat about "putting words in Jeremy's mouth" or "not being genuine", it isn't about that. It's about avoiding foot-in-mouth scenarios like this one.

Really ? The majority thought he was pissed off re the length of the ban over his conduct which got him suspended? Says more about everyone else and the medias narrative really. Even if he was pissed of re the length of ban , so he ****en should be. The entire AFLPA was and they made those comments public from Paul marsh.

There is nuance.

The AFLPA can (and should) complain that Clarkson's punishment was too light, not that Finlayson's punishment was too severe.

Finlayson should have known better than to say anything more about the incident (and the club should have made that inescapably clear, instead of writing and publishing more statements for him to read). Even if only to avoid more stories like this.

He refused to talk further about the incident other then he's pissed off he's out for 3 weeks (which is fair) , ideally context provided might have stopped the media vultures but he's allowed to speak on his wife's podcast. Who's he truly hurting ? Nobody.

What's the AFL going to do with those comments, give him another 5 weeks? If the AFL has asked the club to provide a statement because of a few headlines. Shows what a embarrassing state our competition is at the moment.

I reckon he had every opportunity to provide that context on the podcast. Or they could have taken that segment out. Or re-recorded it. These are not just unfortunate nasty things that keep happening to poor old Jeremy. These are things he's doing.

He's hurting himself and the club. Given the reports of abuse being directed at his wife, and of rocks being thrown at their house, it sounds like he's hurt his family as well.

Anyone who abused his wife or threw rocks is of course a worthless coward, but why invite them for another go?

The AFL stated very clearly that Finlayson would have been suspended for longer but for the immediate contrition he showed.

His comments on the podcast make his earlier contrition seem insincere. If the AFL forms that impression, they'll be furious. They might take further action. If a player lies to an AFL investigation, then brags about or otherwise discloses that they lied, they can probably slap the player with a penalty for bringing the game into disrepute.

I'm not saying Finlayson lied or that he is not contrite (but I do believe he was whinging about being hard done by), but why would he invite the question?

The AFL hasn't asked the club to do anything. The club has written a statement for Jeremy to read because he couldn't manage to either shut up about the incident or at least make sure that every comment he made was inescapably clear.

If the incident is something about which he feels deep shame and remorse, I'm surprised he wants to publicly comment on it at all. If he feels like he let his teammates and the club down, then he could have said exactly that in the first place.

The thing is though... Is anyone genuinely offended by what he said (this time) or is everyone just anticipating offence or looking at it from a publicity perspective? A lot of people saying "it's not a good look" or "it's a PR failure".... But where are the people who are genuinely hurt or impacted by what he said? Or is it just a bunch of people worrying about it on somebody else's behalf?

He brought it up though. He wasn't even being asked about the suspension and got backed into a corner. He could've talked about whatever in this stupid segment. For that matter it wasn't a live interview either so at some point he or his wife could've listened to the audio and went "yeah this isn't necessary to mention".


I honestly don't think there's a single person in this thread who thinks a bloke saying he is pissed off is offensive. Most people would assume he was referring to being pissed off with himself not with the sanction. But why even mention it? Even if there wasn't the slightest grey area in his wording, why even go back to the topic? We all know how the AFL media works, it runs with a story and collects whatever collateral damage it does along the way, but then something else comes up and the media moves on. He's already had his name dragged. But then the media moved on. Why do something that risks the story starting again? Because lo and behold, that's exactly what has happened now. Its just so ****ing stupid.

Funny how a lot of people on here are pretty passionate about a bloke not being able to express how he is feeling emotionally.

Ths is the sort of stuff that needs to be encouraged, yet here the media are shitcanning a bloke for doing something he should be applauded for and encouraging others to do the same. He is on record as being immediately regretful and remorseful of his onfield remarks, recognising their inappropriateness and rightly so.

Many men should feel safe to vocalise their emotions and how they are feeling without ridicule and judgement and being manipulated out of context. I appreciate his honesty in his answer.

Yet here we still are as a society.
