Traded Jesse Hogan [traded with #65 to Fremantle for #6 and #23]

Bell flip flapped. No one believed his bluff but he had the assets to pony up and he did. That’s what happened. Not sure why that’s so hard for some to understand.

Um ok. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story I guess. He didn't bluff. He said freo was not going to pay two first round picks so therefore Melbourne had to change their asking price as freo would pull out of the trade if they kept that demand. He said they had pulled out because he couldn't meet the demands of what Melbourne was asking at the time and then when those demands changed a trade was made. Thats not flip flopping and not even remotely hard to follow as everything was said publicly. We ended up paying a first and a second rounder. It was pretty much reported everywhere that Melbourne was demanding two early picks.

Lobb isn’t a ruckman like the guys you mentioned though. One year he averaged 20 hit outs a game - his personal best. Another year he kicked almost 30 goals - another PB. He’s not quite a tall forward, not quite a ruck. More a tall utility. A handy player, but no Salmon, Madden, Sandy. Laughable to compare him to them.

You realise I said at 26 it was highly unlikely he had reached his potential (which was the original point you were absurdly making) as nearly all players over 205cm with talent reach their potential later. The reason is that it takes longer for really tall players to gain their maximum coordination compared to smaller players. That's pretty much self evident in every sport.

He’s a versatile tall utility. If you play him forward it would be great to get 30 goals a year from him. If you played him as a ruckman, it would be great to get 20-30 hit outs a game from him. As a versatile utility he could be very good. But he’s not elite in either position. He’s signed for good coin and he’s got home which is great for him. He’s made GWS a tiny bit weaker but in reality he was never the number one ruck and there was no place for him as a forward. Hope he’s a success for Fremantle.

Ok. So the point that he hasn't reached his potential because most very tall players take a bit longer is not valid how exactly? I don't have a problem saying Lobb screams untapped potential. When all three of Patton, Cameron and Lobb were in the same team they seemed to get in each others way, but when Lobb plays where he has more space to work in he is a terrific contested mark. It was only a couple of season ago he was leading the afl in contested marks playing predominately forward. Disagree if you like but Im very confident he is a great addition to freo.

When was this? He had a good year in 2016, but had less contested marks than Tom Lynch, even though Tom played 2 less games than Rory.

Rory is decent as a versatile tall, but there’s no need to embellish facts. He’s a $700k+ tall that you gave up a rolled gold draft pick for who can pinch hit forward or in the ruck and will will be a good addition to your side.

Think he will slot in quite nicely to your team.

Yep my point that he was 'leading the afl in contested marks at a point a couple of seasons ago' was pretty accurate. I didn't realise he finished the year second which is an awesome effort and doesnt fit the Rich01 description of him. Im not sure how giving up pick 11 and 19 for 14 and Lobb fit the' rolled gold '(assuming you met royal gold) description of the draft picks given up either. The first 7 in this years draft are very highly rated I agree, but after that the draft is described as very even with good depth in the 8-25 range.

Im not embellishing anything (unlike the easy to disprove factually inaccurate Bell rubbish you posted). I see Lobb as a great contested mark, which he clearly is (see above post) who still has a lot of improvement in his game. Im also very confident he will benefit greatly from the change in the hands in the back rule where players can hold their ground in marking contests next year as that rule is designed to assist good contested marking players.

Agree or disagree as I'm not fussed. We've derailed this thread enough already so Im out. Im very confident you don't get most things football.

I’m not sure what Sherrif said in your quote was wrong.
The Melbourne list manager publicly said that he he expected to get an historical trade. Plenty of journos suggested that Melbourne was asking for pick 5 and 6 initially, possibly with a young Victorian player thrown in. The articles are still online for you to find.
Most Freo posters on here thought 6 and a late first round pick would be fair. You can look up the thread on the Freo board to verify.

I can only assume the club is confident the player talent does not vary between those picks and going by trade history we are not a club that tries to be stingy with every trade unlike to Bombers.

He had the assets in a top 7 pick (which is rolled gold this year) and Neale to pick up Hogan and Lobb without playing games.

They gave up a star in Neale and a future star for pick 14 who should be decent, Lobb (who should be ok as long as he play forward but won’t get any better at 26) and Hogan who is a gun and will be your best pickup in decades if his mind is in it and his navicular isn’t as serious as what people are saying.
The best trading they have done in a long time, but that’s not setting the bar high.

Agree. We should have pushed for the earlier pick. I think Mahoney cops a bit of heat but he gets deals done. Despite the early argy bargy we weren’t getting 2 top 10 picks. I think in the end Mahoney just wanted to ensure we got May. Otherwise we would have held Hogan when he wasn’t really invested for another year and risk not landing a May type next year.

Agree 100%. A player like him that is versatile works to help improve the team through structure. I’d be hoping for 20 hit outs and a goal a game from him. To expect him to be a dominant ruck or the number one forward was not the reason you recruited him as you say.

Agree. The arguments are pretty useless now. I think most agree that Melbourne got unders. However Mahoney was quiet chuffed with getting May. Most Melbourne supporters also happy with the May addition.
